John Powell's HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2010) - 2020 Varese 2CD Deluxe Edition

Finally started listening to this. I was actually happier with the OST. And that opening alternate at the start really does not work. I mean, it's a great alternate, but the presentation just doesn't work.

Maybe they were created editorially from all the stems convenially accessible because of the striped recording.

It's also possible the Astrid bit, was a left in bit of the temp track?

Got my set!

Here are the theme explanations from the booklet:

Booklet names on the left, previously known as names on right

Relationship between Hiccup and Toothless/Flight/Main Theme = Friendship/Flying Theme/"Test Drive"

Friendship Arpeggio = Friendship Ostinato

Viking Fun theme = Berk Theme (This is Berk, New Tail, Astrid Goes for a Spin)

Viking Warrior Theme = Viking Theme (This Is Berk (Original Opening Version), Dragon Training)

Viking Aspirational Tune/Enlightenment/Winds of Change = Hiccup's Theme (This is Berk, War Room, Kill Ring, Over)

Love Theme = Romantic Flight

Dragon Theme = Dragon Theme (This Is Berk, Dragons Den, Over / Less Okay, Wings, Counter Attack.)

Fate Theme/Hope for the Future = Training Theme/See You Tomorrow Theme (Training Out There, See You Tomorrow, Ready / Confront)

Who wants to earn a gold star by posting timestamps of each of these themes in each of the tracks listed here for them?

Dammit! I don't want to listen to it until I get it this week but I could easily do it! And a whole theme catalogue of every appearance of al of them! No gold star :crymore:

I hear Hiccup and Toothless from 1:34-1:56 and 2:19-2:40

Are you saying 1:17-1:34 and 2:02-2:19 is like a B section of that theme?

It's similar to 0:04-0:24 of the This Is Berk Alt Intro

I’d say it’s more the other way around - in Test Drive and Coming Back Around, at least, what you’re calling the B section precedes the A, right?

Appearing first in any particular cue isn't a deciding factor of what's the main part and what's the B part... I'd say the main theme is the 1:34 and 2:19 bits, not the 1:17 and 2:02 bits, you don't agree?  That's the melody people leave the theater humming

Test Drive was one of the first cues demoed, and when he first demoed it, it didn't have a B part.

He says the opening logo is that theme, so it is definitely part of the same theme.

    Booklet highlights appearances in:

    Wounded: 0:13 A section, 0:50 B section, 1:07 A section.
    Offering: 0:02 A Section.
    See You Tomorrow: 0:08 A Section, 2:20 A Section

Seems like its kind of like the Indiana Jones theme where there are 2 strong themes that could have been the main theme of any movie but instead they just use both interchangeably

Added timestamps to the booklet mentions.

There is one bit I think Grieving is mistaken on, he says 3:21 of See You Tomorrow is the Dragon theme, whereas I here more of the Viking Warrior theme, though I guess there might be some Dragon theme in there too..

So I guess that means my favorite theme is the Hiccup and toothless B section :p

It does and it’s a brilliant opening. Don’t think anyone has posted this analysis... ok so the narration is a touch OTT but the analysis is excellent and really brings home how much thought he put into the opening cue. Brings a tiny tear of joy every time I watch it...

Interesting video, his passion is inspiring

He calls "Viking Warrior" Stoic's Theme, "Friendship Arpeggio" Toothless's Theme, "Winds of Change" The Teenager's Theme and "Toothless and Hiccup" Hiccup's Theme.  I assume this is what many people thought before Grieving's booklet?

I thought slate numbers were supposed to be part of the official tracklist for this release.  They weren't in the track names grabbed by XLD when I ripped the CDs.

Also, the Sideways Youtube channel is really annoying and I've never successfully made it through one of his videos.

EDIT: I think I'll combine tracks 1 and 2.  I like the way they play with out the 5 second gap between.

AFAIK those services entirely rely in user submitted data.  The guy who submitted it probably didn't bother to type them out. I know I wouldn't - how is your experience improved by having them?

Finally received my copy! I almost forgot about it when it had occurred to me to check if it'd actually shipped, which it disembarked on the 15th. Feels nice to finally own a VS release, especially since I do like the label disc art on these. Will give it a spin once the second disc finishes ripping.

Yup. EAC came with them, but 3 tracks from disc 1 had the wrong numbers on them. I would've assumed they'd have just copied and pasted it from the Varese website, but I guess not.

      Viking Warrior Theme

      • This Is Berk 0:03, 1:28, 1:50, 2:26

I'm not convinced that all of these three are the same theme.

This is Berk 0:03 and 1:28 are the same and clearly the Viking warrior theme.

2:26 is different, but I guess it's similar enough that I would call it either a variation of Viking Warrior, or the Viking Warrior B section.

1:50 I've always assumed to be a separate theme used for particular instances of viking heroism. At first I thought it was stoick's theme, but in HTTYD 2 and 3 it appears at times where it's obviously not directly referencing Stoick. Is it just the B section of Viking warrior? What does that make the one at 2:26? Just a variation?

Great questions. Does Grieving's notes clarify anything?

Or maybe someone with the sheet music, can elucidate the differences on a music theory level

      Link to comment

That theme at 1:50 appears at exactly the moment stoick first appears. So if what Grieving says is correct than it would be the Viking warrior B section.

Then that just leaves the theme at 2:26, but there's a strong chance that one is just a variation of the Viking warrior A section. I'm not versed in music theory enough to know exactly what the similarities are between that and the main viking warrior theme.

I just thought it was curious that Powell specifically chose to include them for both Dragon and Solo.

Also, isn’t  there metadata on the disc itself sometimes?  I know for a fact my program has pulled album info even when not connected to the internet before.

There is a plugin for Windows Medis Player that allows it to read CD Text, I wouldn't  be surprised if there aren't  similar things out there for other ripping programs.

I do know what you mean. The ones where he's having a more negative rant are the most frustrating as he usually has lot of good points and his reasoning is usually pretty sound. But he suffers from that mania that seems to grip some YouTubers where they have to turn their narration style up to 11 and it starts to grate really quickly. For such a well informed and interesting guy, it's a shame he kinda undermines it by coming across so shrill and manic all the time. I guess he'd be super boring if he was one of those really awkward and dull sounding speakers who sound a bit uncomfortable effectively speaking in public, but something more measured would certainly sell his ideas much better. The videos themselves are well put together with a great selection of clips and well edited, with really interesting subjects. The one about the Matrix score is fascinating. I'd urge you to persevere, but totally understand why you'd switch off after 5 minutes! He often references other YouTubers who sound like they could be pretty interesting, must check some of them out...

I think Sony CDs often have it, probably because Sony were more consistent in supporting it in their players than most other companies.

I'm pretty sure that my last 3 CD purchases (Enola Holmes, Wild Wild West, and this) all had CD text. The only flaw being that all of the track titles had '<Composer> / ' in front of the title, which is a bit of a faff to remove.

MP3 tag might have a script for this kind of thing.
