GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 1 – VON RYAN’S EXPRESS / THE BLUE MAX:
LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET) LLLCD 1544
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $24.98
Volume 1 is a 2-CD presentation of the composer’s scores from two large-scale period war dramas – 1965’s WWII-era VON RYAN’S EXPRESS, starring Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard, and directed by Mark Robson, and 1966’s WWI-era THE BLUE MAX, starring George Peppard and James Mason, directed by John Guillermin. Filmmaker Rod Lurie proclaims Goldsmith as “the greatest composer for military films,” and this handsome release more than proves that claim, serving up soaring orchestral might that powerfully enhances these wartime epics.
Both out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The 2-CD re-issue is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, mastered by Daniel Hersch, and is limited to 2000 units.

LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1545
Music by Jerry Goldsmith

GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 3 – THE STRIPPER / S*P*Y*S:
LIMITED EDITION LLLCD 1557
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $24.98

STARTS SHIPPING MAY 11

Volume 3 showcases two more of the composer’s original feature film scores, one from the ’60s – 1963’s drama, THE STRIPPER, starring Joanne Woodward (in the first of Goldsmith’s collaborations with director Franklin J. Schaffner), and one from the ’70s – 1974’s espionage comedy, S*P*Y*S, starring Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland, and directed by Irvin Kershner. From the jazz-influenced drama of THE STRIPPER to the broad and lively comic antics and action of S*P*Y*S, these two dynamic Goldsmith scores demonstrate the composer’s unique and boundless talents across two decades. This collection’s presentation of S*P*Y*S (previously available in truncated form only in a long out-of-print box set) is expanded with never-before-released material. Also making its debut on this collection, is the bonus track premiere release of “Pacer’s Farewell” from the 1960 western, FLAMING STAR, starring Elvis Presley. This marked Goldsmith’s very first work for the studio.

Both previously out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The reissue is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, mastered by Matessino and is limited to 2000 units.

GOLDSMITH AT 20th VOL. 4 – ACE ELI AND RODGER OF THE SKIES / TORA! TORA! TORA!: LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)
LLLCD 1563
Music by Jerry Goldsmith
Limited Edition of 2000 Units
RETAIL PRICE: $26.98

STARTS SHIPPING OCT 12

La-La Land Records and 20th Century Studios proudly present a new collection of classic Jerry Goldsmith scores for film and television composed for 20th Century Fox: GOLDSMITH AT 20th Vol. IV – ACE ELI AND RODGER OF THE SKIES / TORA! TORA! TORA!. Bringing back out-of-print favorites while also debuting previously unreleased music, this collection will feature new authoritative liner notes and unified packaging sure to please avid collectors but also serve as a perfect gateway for listeners experiencing this music for the first time.

Volume IV showcases two more of the composer’s original feature film scores – this time from two ’70s aviation-themed dramas – 1973’s post WWI father-and-son-barnstorming story ACE ELI AND ROGER OF THE SKIES, starring Cliff Robertson and Eric Shea, and directed by JOHN ERMAN, and 1970’s TORA! TORA! TORA!, the Pearl Harbor docudrama starring Martin Balsam, Joseph Cotten, E.G. Marshall, So Yamamura and Tatsuya Mihashi, and directed by RICHARD FLEISCHER, KINJI FUKASAKU and TOSHIO MASUDA. While the films are only connected tangentially by the concept of aircraft and pilots, both scores on this 2-CD presentation explore wildly different sonic landscapes and emotions, and both soar as works of musical art.

ACE ELI presents two unique programs – The first is the original Goldsmith score in mono, in the film’s original sequence. The film was later recut and additional music was written with contributions from Alexander Courage. These cues, and the song “Who’s for Complainin’?” are presented in stereo alongside surviving stereo Goldsmith compositions in a sequence closer to the released version.

TORA! TORA! TORA! utilizes the same master as our previous release.

Both previously out-of-print scores return here with all-new art design by Jim Titus and new in-depth liner notes by writer Jeff Bond. The reissue, limited to 2000 units, is produced by Mike Matessino and Neil S. Bulk, with ACE restored, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone and TORA mastered by Dan Hersch and Mike Matessino.

20th Century Fox doesn't exist anymore. UNDERWATER was the last film to screen under that logo, if I'm not mistaken. It's called 20th Century Studios now, under the Disney banner.

I'm aware of that, but when Jerry Goldsmith was working there, it was called "20th Century Fox". Calling it just "20th" smacks of historical revisionism.

I believe "20th" has been a nickname for quite some time, but I'm not sure. Either way, it's a way to be both current and historically accurate at the same time, skipping the "Fox" bit entirely. Perhaps there are even some legal issues involved? Nobody wants to get Disney's legal team breathing down their neck!

I was just about to look out for the Intrada double score releases of "Fate Is the Hunter/Shock Treatment" and "Van Ryan's Express/The Detective". Now that the later are both being re-released, I'm almost certain that the former will as well.

Simpson joked about that already in their 90s' episodes. I didn't even notice that the "Fox" wass gone at first.

HOLY SHIT! The Mephisto Waltz and The Other are 20th Century Fox titles! Please let this be a double feature in this series...bowdown

So are these identical in content to the latest individual release of each score, except for the liner notes and apparently one new track on Flim-Flam Man? Same masters etc.?

Sadly, The Other seems to be controlled by Varese in perpetuity, according to Bruce Kimmel, unless LLL and Varese collaborate on a new release, like with the Apes box set

So glad I bought the FOX BOX which has HIGHLIGHTS of many of these scores that I don't necessarily need ' complete'.😁

Another " collection of cues" for the archive😒

I just bought HUNTER/TREATMENT for half of what it's going for on EBAY.

Was I ' taken'?😳

I was just about to look out for the Intrada double score releases of "Fate Is the Hunter/Shock Treatment" and "Von Ryan's Express/The Detective". Now that the later are both being re-released, I'm almost certain that the former will as well.

As already noted, both of those masterpieces are Varese titles in perpetuity, alas. Same for the two Flint scores which Varese released only half of each, in the 90s. But then again Goldsmith’s two Planet of the Apes scores were Varese as well and LLL successfully sublicensed them for their Apes box set...so it’s at least not as impossible as it once sounded.

I’m sure the other two will be coming again. I hope Shock Treatment can include the one missing cue I’ve heard about; that’s an awesome score. But alas they didn’t include the two unreleased cues from The Detective which were on the Twilight Time Blu-ray iso score (albeit one of them, the more important one, with sound effects):

But there’s an unreleased cue from The Flim-Flam Man here, so I’ll be buying for that and in hopes of improved sound over the old FSM. I’m more excited about what this could mean for 2021 since they talk about previously unreleased music.

So Yavar, out of all the work Goldsmith did for Fox (film and TV), what scores are the ones that have yet to be available in complete form anywhere?

Yeah, I'm hoping for the same kind of collaboration between Varese and LLL again.

Maybe proper sources for these two couldn't be found. But wow, one of them would have been the longest cue from the entire score.

That Fox Box must have been quite an event back then... so many premieres of completely unreleased scores.

Even better for me, at least.

Unlike many FSM Goldsmith fans , I only owned a very small amount of music. So, it was like getting a great sampling of new and never released cues. I didn't have to spend $$$ acquiring all the osts.

Some fans griped about having to rebuy stuff they already had:

I bet not. Varese likes making everything brighter and louder.

In other words, the 'old' version sounds BETTER!

FOX BOX ( Varese):

THE BLUE MAX 3 cues ( I own the Legacy CD)

Von RYAN 8 cues

FLIM FLAM. 2 cues

THE DETECTIVE 12 cues

Pretty damn good selection!

SHOCK TREATMENT has 9 cues but I bought the Intrada because the sonic upgrade from mono to stereo was significantly improved.

DAMNATION ALLEY also has 9 cues but Intrada upgrade was phenomenal!

I'm going to spin my recently acquired FATE IS THE HUNTER/ SHOCK TREATMENT tonite😊

Think again. The previous La-La Land 2-disc edition of The Blue Max leaves all the others in the dust, sonically...even the fine Intrada release. I was amazed when I heard it...such a marked improvement that I listen to it more than the Tadlow re-recording, when otherwise I might not have.

The latter is an astounding score, and sounds so much better on the Intrada than in the Varese Fox Box (also much more music, though I think still missing a cue).

Fingers crossed! But I wouldn't assume they'd go to the trouble/expense for other scores just because they did it for Planet of the Apes...

Yup, and a really important one in terms of the film narrative. I really wish it had been included even in a "bonus" section with music-and-effects, since the sound effects really are more minimal than "A Crushing Affair", a cue that was included from an M&E track on Intrada's release of The Sand Pebbles in 2011 (also a Mike Mattesino project). I wonder why these two cues were left off of this release. Hell, they even had room to include the source music that the Blu-ray isolated score track included as well.

Film scores are the only genre I know of where fans like to claim each remaster is better than the previous, but in every other category remasters are generally regarded as inferior loudness wars losses.

So..re: BLUE MAX

Varese was a big(?) improvement over Legacy

Intrada was a big improvement over Varese

Tallow improved Intrada

and finally.......LLL blows them all away?😳

Tadlow is another recording, so that doesn't count.

Yavar didn't compare the sound quality of Intrada/LLL vs Tadlow. And I definitely agree that the Intrada was an improvement and the LLL has by far the best sound of all the releases of the original recording. I like the Tadlow a lot and usually play it these days, and obviously it has modern acoustics. But while the LLL sounds "old", it's pefectly listenable, and anyone who wants to have the original recording should have that version.

Luckily, that's possible again in a few days.:)

20th Century Fox doesn't exist anymore. UNDERWATER was the last film to screen under that logo, if I'm not mistaken. It's called 20th Century Studios now, under the Disney banner.

The new post-Disney 20th Century releases still bear the "©20th Century Fox Film Corporation" at the end of the film, i.e. Call of the Wild, Downhill and The Empty Man.

They should take it all out and call it Disney.

@Yavar Moradi Do you have anything to say about The Flim-Flam Man? How does it compare to, let's say Take Her, She's Mine or other comedy scores?

Well for one thing it’s not a comedy score. :) I can see how the title might make you think that, but it’s actually lovely Americana for the most part, with some fun more lively tracks. It’s more related to Jerry’s lighter Americana western scores than anything else. I think I remember that you like Stagecoach, so you’ll like this I suspect. I confess I haven’t played the FSM a ton but whenever I do, I enjoy it.

So...I actually spent almost an hour working on a reply to you about this, several days ago. Only had a few things still to add. It seemed like the board's software had automatically saved it, as it usually does. And then I had to turn off my computer, and upon logging back in found that instead the board had saved my *previous* (already posted!) post as the "draft" instead of what I had spent so long working on. So I gotta redo it from scratch it seems. Will try soon.

It's a bit frustrating that there is still only one proper album cover of The Flim-Flam Man which is ugly as hell.

I completely agree and I was also really hoping for a cover for its pairing on the FSM disc, A Girl Named Sooner, which has never gotten one. I suspect a new edition of that will be in this series eventually, but I guess we won't get a standalone Jim Titus cover for it. Damn.

Here's a fairly neat cover my friend Brad Wills made and shared on the FSM board a while back, as well as his cover for A Girl Named Sooner, based on a paperback tie-in edition of the novel.

Ooof, that stinks!

I've taken to writing drafts in a Google Doc I just called "scrap paper" and then after I finally post something I can remove it form there

Yeah I often compose long posts in Gmail actually, since it auto-saves drafts, and then I copy and paste into a forum. But I thought this forum basically did that automatically, so I didn't bother. Alas...

I think that the auto-save feature here is just saving it locally on that particular device, so if you switch devices (or you cleared your cookies or whatever), you wouldn't be able to access them

Don't think so. I'm pretty sure I've started writing a reply on my phone, then logged into my computer to finish it and it's there, populating when I click in the reply field. I think it's tied to board login. My post sadly just got replaced by a different one I already posted.

I'm sure you're right about the different blue color but I've now wiped out whatever color values we used to have.  Oh well
