KK 3,307
Shore scored Deepa Mehta's Funny Boy, which is coming out on Netflix this December: https://filmmusicreporter.com/2020/09/07/howard-shore-scoring-deepa-mehtas-funny-boy/
Disco Stu 15,495
I read the novel Funny Boy back in college in 2006. Pretty good book.

Thor 7,471
Deepa Mehta movies almost always have great scores, so looking forward to this.
KK 3,307
It's a good book, but the film production seems deeply problematic though. It's a story about a Tamil boy negotiating his queerness against a climate of Tamil oppression during the Sri Lankan civil war/riots...but there's not a single Tamil person in the cast. It's also been selected as this year's Canadian submission for the Oscar race (because it was made with a lot of government funding). The whole thing reeks of Mehta exploiting an entire cultural people/crisis for regaining neoliberal relevance and marketability...

She's always been concerned with social exclusion and the meeting points between politics, sexuality, class and race. It seems to be perfectly in line with her previous movies. But from what I hear from some people in the production, and what I see in casting decisions and whatnot, there seems to be an insensitivity to the very violent historical and political context of Sri Lanka. It looks like she's speaking to a persecuted people's experience as an outsider, catering it to the Western gaze, without really a deeper consultation with said people. Now maybe you'll eventually realize how you're baited into an artificial culture war. Chen G.

Thor 7,471
Indeed. Nothing but thumbs up from me. It remains to be seen if the music itself holds up.
blondheim 1,157
It does, but it's Shore, so I have confidence. I don't like everything he does, but quite a lot it --chances are good
gkgyver 1,645
It's fascinating that I can never really tell which films Howard Shore would be likely to score, but each time he's announced for a movie, I say "of course!"
