Your next hoped-for Powell score expansion? (OTHER than the other 2 Dragons score;)

Mr Powell has been killing it this year with releases on his own private label. What’s the next expansion of his scores you hope for OTHER than the remaining two Dragons scores?

Personally I’d love for an expanded
X-Men: The Last Stand. Perhaps Paycheck. And The Road to El Dorado has been a personal favorite of mine since that film came out. His “Save El Dorado” cue is just a flat-out swashbuckling blast of Powell fun :)

What do you mean?  Only Solo: Deluxe Edition came out on his own label.  Call of the Wild was Hollywood Records, Forces of Nature was La-La Land, and HTTYD Deluxe was Varese

The other 2 Dragon scores. ;)

I know the thread says not to, but it has to be said once more just to make sure it happens, by golly! ;)

Okay FINE... did all the music to the first Shrek get released? That was the first score that brought my attention to him, despite it being a joint effort with Harry Gregson-Williams. However, I can totally feel which parts were Powell. When I first heard Narnia: Lion, Witch, Wardrobe was going to be done by Gregson-Williams, I was hoping for that sound they did in Shrek. While I like that score, I felt like it didn't have some of those qualities I liked from when he did that score, and assumed maybe that part of his style was Powell. Sure enough, when the first How To Train Your Dragon score happened, THAT was the sound I was looking for. ;)

I'd buy anything he puts out, but his best scores that still have a substantial amount of unreleased music (and ignoring the fact many are available through other means...) are...

The Bourne Identity

The Adventures Of Pluto Nash

Paycheck

The Bourne Supremacy

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

X-Men: The Last Stand

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Pan

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

@BloodBoal hopes it is Pan!

Out of all your options most of the post 2005 LA recorded ones are presumably off the table, though you never know (exceptions were made for Giacchino's Trek expansion)

Was there a ton of unreleased music from Pan? (I had the misfortune of sitting through that movie once and have tried to wipe it from my memory so I could enjoy the score by itself;)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

There's a lot of unreleased material in the first half of the film, not so much in the second half. Most of it is basically quieter material (the unreleased action material is mostly short bits that were microedited here and there in tracks on the album), which is quite nice and helps the score breathe a bit. Recording sessions leak, please!

Tried to pay attention to what each theme was supposed to represent, and I have to say it's not very clear. Here's how it goes:

- The main theme (introduced at the very beginning of the score in Opening Overture), which I originally thought was Peter's theme, is actually used interchangeably for both Peter and Hook. Actually, I think it's more often used for Hook than for Peter, which even led me to wonder if the characters didn't each have a theme, with both themes sounding very similar to one another. Frankly, if the theme didn't open the score, and appeared a few times before Peter met Hook, I would have definitely think this was Hook's theme! It often plays when he's performing heroics.

- The other major thematic idea (introduced in the second half of Opening Overture, and which gets its first major rendition in Floating - Neverland Ahoy!), which I thought was a theme for Neverland or possibly a flying theme seems to be neither. It's used in very different contexts, and never seems to be linked to anything specific. *Maybe* this is actually Peter's theme, but I'm not sure of that.

- Then there's the theme introduced in Air Raid / Office Raid (I didn't noticed that theme first appeared here) that later gets two big renditions in Kidnapped / Galleon Dog Fight. It's not Blackbeard's theme, but a theme for his pirates.

- Following this is Blackbeard's theme, first heard in Inverted Galleon and later in Flying Ship Fight. I actually thought that one was the same as the pirates' theme (which I thought was Blackbeard's theme. Get it? ;)), just a different variation of it, but it's not. Interestingly, the first time this theme is used, it's not directly linked to Blackbeard. But during the climax, it definitely is.

- Finally, the theme heard prominently in A Warrior's Fate (it appears quite a few times before that in more subdued renditions (at the beginning of Origin Story for example), or more subtle disguise (at 01:11 in Pirates Vs Natives Vs Heroes Vs Chickens) then also in Flying Ship Fight) is a theme for the Fairies.

And that's all the themes I could notice in the score (thought I think there might be one or two more in there, though minor ones).

Now, that being said, and going back to the interview where Powell stated that he generally doesn't use themes specifically for characters, locations, etc., but rather prefers to use whichever theme he thinks works best for the scene (or something like that), I'd say this is true here too. At least for the two major thematic ideas, and maybe even the Fairies theme (I think that one is used a few times during moments which have nothing to do with the Fairies, though more often than not, it is used for the Fairies).

A few other random notes:

- The unreleased material didn't feature any other theme, at least none that I could notice, so no theme for Tiger Lily.

- The OST is 100% in chronological order.

- Kidnapped - Galleon Dog Fight is supposed to segue directly into Floating - Neverland Ahoy!

- The score really gets to shine in the film. Hadn't heard (good) film music so much in the forefront in a while.

Oh wow! Thanks. That’s the most I’ve ever seen someone go into depth on that score. I just recall a lot of people thinking it was just left overs HTTYD 2, shrugging, and moving on when it originally came out.  But I really enjoyed it. I think particularly in tracks like “murmurs of love and death” he started tapping into some really interesting sounds that hadn’t been heard yet (from Powell) in his larger fantasy scores. Fingers crossed we get an expanded release.

Road to El Dorado NEEDS to be expanded, as the OST is pretty lame and focuses only on the Elton John songs. I love the main theme, it's so swashbuckling and fun!

I’ve been wanting a proper release of this score for years. There’s a lot to juggle because of Elton John’s involvement. Hopefully it’ll come out one day.

Powell just said on Facebook that The Hidden Worlds will be expanded, but not anytime soon.

I don’t think there’s a massive amount missing from The Hidden World although I would buy an expanded edition in any event. Same for HTTYD2 really. I think every time I listen to The Hidden World I like it more (having originally been slightly disappointed. Not sure what I was thinking!). The Furies in Love are 3 of the greatest  minutes he’s ever written. Exquisite into soaring and the kind of film music that transcends the film. But at least it’s on the album!

I want him to record a concert suite of HTTYD!😊

Agreed and some of his other scores. One of those Ghent compilations would be great (like the Beltrami and Burwell ones).

I think my pick would go to Road to Eldorado. Maid of his scores are worth hearing in full but this is the most lacking on the existing album but is terrific.

Years ago he was planning to record an album of suites, but I'm not sure if anything materialised. It would be great if it turned out to be this, but I imagine it's unlikely.

I remain hopeful... some film suites could well as a complement to a recording of a shorter concert work, such as the overture I saw performed by the (I think) Sussex Youth Orchestra a couple of years ago, which would make a nice opener. A bit like the recent Desplat Airlines album.

If he does release another album prior to the end of the year, I assume it would be a re-release rather than whatever he's working on currently. Having said that, sounds like this new score is keeping him pretty busy (mainly with rewrites it seems!).

What other scores would you wish get ‘deluxe edition’ed? 🤓

And yet... That's exactly what just went live on Spotify.

Now THERE'S a nice Christmas present!
