The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Morricone) 3 CD set released by Quartet Records

Jurassic Shark

I'm totally OK with the complete score being in mono, and I hope people won't refrain from purchasing because of that. But I do wonder what's the story about the three stereo bonus tracks.

The remastered album is incredible. They've even fixed the microseconds of "missing tape" at the beginning of the main title.

I'm more worried about the quality, obvious by a comparison of the correct film program and OST samples. I'll have to listen to the whole thing to decide I guess.

If you're OK with the sound quality of the non-OST tracks of the GDM release, I wouldn't be worried.

Interestingly, the sample URLs have the English titles.

Wait, did I forget to post my first reaction/feelings here? Ah, well then...

That's because I copied the info from the email. But now it's fixed, with links to the audio excerpts!

And I just got a glimpse of the shipping cost for US residents direct from Quartet. Definitely buying these from Screen Archives!

It's €13.40 within Europe.

Screen Archives is insane too. I ordered this and Midnight Cowboy and it’s $15 for shipping.

Screen Archives is located in Virginia, Stu’s home state and adjacent to mine. It is what it is.

Will anyone ever really listen to 8 hours of GBU music? The mind boggles.

I don't know what that means.  The main program is 85 minutes long.  If you choose too, you can then listen to 54 minutes of bonus tracks, or just turn the player off when the main program ends.

Or if you choose you, you can listen to the 34 minute stereo OST album instead.

29,95€ is a completely reasonable price for what you get here.

Some people sure love exaggerating things.

I get you. Plus the extra cd charge for multiple cd sets doesn't help

Agree with this sentiment. Obviously, "8 hours" was a rhetorical exaggeration, not a literal description. Personally, I have the 50th anniversary edition, and I've been meaning to replace it with the shorter and more focussed OST. Or at least re-program the cues to fit that programme. That's all I ever need from this.

But there's no 50th anniversary edition of this score. Are you thinking of Once Upon a Time in the West?

Right you are. Had my wires crossed there for a moment.

But my GOOD, BAD, UGLY is 60 overlong minutes too. So the same applies here -- looking to re-arrange it into the OST programme.

The GDM release is 59 minutes and the EMI release is 55 minutes, if I remember correctly. The OST is great, but it has none of the different variations on the main theme.

US residents might want to order from Intrada rather than Screen Archives to save on shipping

Yeah, I know, but Morricone often has too many variations of his theme(s), so I'm fine with the more succinct selection on the OST. I'm told it's fairly easy to re-program this one into the OST programme.

I think all the OST tracks are intact on both the GDM and the EMI, since that's about the only ones in stereo.

Btw, the OST of the dollar films and Once Upon a Time are collected on this nice release. It practically screams Thor!

That might be, but I'd say it's a loss to have none of them.

It's not often that I agree with you, but this is one of those times. I have whatever album is 55 mins long, and I probably listen to about half of that in practice.

I occasionally put it on in the car, but it's usually not too long before I'm thinking 'that theme again?' and want to switch to something else. The main theme is a classic, and the bits to which I do listen are beautiful, but there's too much of it.

Same largely goes for Once Upon a Time in the West. The highlights (40 mins in my case) are downright fantastic, but it doesn't sustain for the whole score.

(Haven't seen either film - I feel that's an important caveat)

From what I understand, the elements for For A Few Dollars More are lost or damaged. Hopefully one day something is unearthed that allows a proper release to happen.

The GDM is a fantastic listen because it was supervised by EM.

IT has the OST embedded on the program. The.mono isn't fantastic Soundwise, but adds some great cues ( that Th or doesn't want to listen to)

I have the COMPLETE score in mono. It's not a great listen and doesn't add much musically.

I called this the " greatest score ever written for a motion picture", and I stand by that comment.

You can read my in-depth analysis including the " lost liner notes in FILM SCORE MONTLY.

Link is in my profile.

Good listenin' pardners!

P.s.

Thor, I do remove 2-3 tracks from the GDM that are repetitive.

Not true.

I have a version created recently.

A couple of tracks are wobbly but the mono sound is excellent- better than GBU.

They are slightly different programs.

GDM has the longer, film version of the song in the concentration camp.

Plus the extended version of the climactic gun fight.

They're able to do get rid of wobbling with today's technology, at least to some extent.

Yes! And I'm hoping for a remaster Secret of the Sahara (and possibly a reissued Sahara) too.
