John Williams' OST album breakdowns

Jay

Recommended Posts

In this thread we will compile a list of exactly which cues appear in each track on John Williams' OST albums

After that we can move on to FYC albums and then expanded albums

I'll copy the breakdowns into the main post so we have them all in one place

I'll only collect ones we know for sure what's in each track, due to expanded edition liner notes and/or the original sheet music.  Maybe when we get through all those we can do the rest with made-up cue titles or scene descriptions?

Feel free to link me to any I haven't found yet!

AFAIK no one has seen the handwritten original, but I thought we somehow knew that that track was all one recording and not two recordings combined...

1 Indy's Very First Adventure (8:13)

So, unfortunately I don't know what the first section of 'Indy's Very First Adventure' is titled, but I can tell you it's almost certainly not 'Young Indy'.

Looking through the GEMA database, all the cues that appear on the 1989 OST have had their titles replaced with the OST title, while the cues that weren't used appear with their original titles. OST tracks that are comprised of more than one cue are listed with 'Part 1', 'Part 2', etc. There's three sections to 'Indy's Very First Adventure', so it's most likely comprised of 1M1, 1M2, and 1M3. 1M2 and 1M3 are probably 'Circus Train Chase' and 'Dunn and Duffy Circus Train', and no one's uncovered a likely title for 1M1 so far, so it could actually be originally titled 'Indy's Very First Adventure' or something generic like 'Main Title'.

'Young Indy' can be inferred to be 1M4/2M1, especially because GEMA also has an entry for a 'Young Indy Sweetener' and there's a 1M4/2M1X 'Sweetener' in the leaked full scores. There's also a 'Young Indy Insert'.

1M1 is the Native American chanting you hear at the start of the film

1M2 is the first cue in the track, 1M3 is the second cue in the track, 1M4/2M1 is the next cue in the sequence, which was wasn't on the OST but added to the track for the Concord

We don't know any of their titles for absolute certainly since they weren't in the sheet music leak, but based on what I can see in the online database we can assume 1M2 is Young Indy, 1M3 is Dunn and Duffy Circus Train, and 1M4/2M1 is Circus Train Chase

Young Indy Sweetener is likely the circus organ overdub heard in the film during 1M3 that is not in the OST or Concord version - so titled because the circus organ is playing the Young Indy theme

Young Indy Insert is likely the new opening used in the film that replaces the original opening (as heard on the Concord) of 1M4/2M1, so titled because it is a statement of the Young Indy theme

That's interesting, the source music for the Hatay palace scene isn't listed (the scene where Donovan hands over the Rolls Royce in exchange for passage through the Sultan's land).

Shame the blimp piano source never leaked in any of the bootlegs. Do we know if Williams composed it?

I believe this list includes only the source music composed by JW (note also the absence of the Koeniggraetzer March).

Great!  That's pretty definitive then.  I knew as soon as I saw that TROS post we'd be able to do all kinds of research and find out new things about other scores too!

I just remembered something Mike told me once, which is that Paramount always (or al least frequently) replaces original cue names with OST track titles on the official cue sheets. So that completely lines up with what we're seeing here for TLC

Ah, so it’s Paramount that has this practice of not using the original cue names of cues that appear in OST tracks? I’m seeing the same thing for The Adventures of Tintin, but fortunately we’ve already got almost all those titles (I just wanted to fill in a few gaps).

So, now we can speculate what the three parts of ‘Indy’s Very First Adventure’ would be. @crumbs Have a 24-bit version to analyze for hints?

And interesting that ‘Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra’ is unexpectedly listed as two parts. The main cue and an insert? Bet it’s the bit with the Indy theme…

The Indy scores have never been released in high resolution.  Bouzereau probably didn't even master the Concord expansions in high res!

There's an obvious transition from one cue to the next at 4:49; The editing is not only different there between the film, OST, and Concord, but this is also where the cue that Williams plays in concerts begins.  So it's obvious that 4:49-end is 1M3.

I always thought 0:00-4:49 was 1M2, and the Native American chanting heard in the film before the music begins was 1M1.  But if we take this cue list as definitive, then I suppose we have to assume there's two cues within the 0:00-4:49 part, but that's kinda weird because the BMI list only has a "Dunn and Duffy Circus Train" and "Circus Train Chase" to cover this section of the film and nothing obvious that would come before that other than "Young Indy"

Hmm, so maybe one of those titles isn’t actually authentic. BMI inexplicably has an entry for “Packet from Dad / To Donovan’s House”, which is a bootleg title! The real title is “Sinister Visitors”.

6BBFF0D1-BDAE-440A-BADB-25962C48EEA0.png

The division between those two sections is quite clear, The City of Prague re-recording even has a pause at that spot. And I can’t hear any spot afterwards that sounds like a potential change between cues until 1M4/2M1 begins. But that means there must be some kind of insert or sweetener in there to account for the three parts, but it would theoretically have to be something also used on the album, so the calliope wouldn’t count. That’s why the ‘To The Boats’ intro is listed as such and not ‘Escape from Venice Part 1’.

I would like to know more about how he's created such an "inventive" OST album montage like "Seven Years in Tibet".

Does John Williams first make the "merges" on paper using the music sheets, or does he join the recorded cues together directly at the editing desk?

Finally, is it really always him who create these OST edits?

I do not believe there's really been any interviews done with JW that cover this aspect of the creative process.

Would love to be proven wrong if somebody finds one!

I think we can be pretty sure he's very much in charge of that side of things, as the album always states "Produced by JW", so that means he has more than a level of authorship. That being said, the music editor is possibly the closest collaborator of the composer and he might offer suggestions, ideas and thoughts about album assembly and JW might approve. It's a process based on total trust between composer and music editor.

In some case, an edit can become famous. I think the best example is the "Star Wars Main Theme".

I don't know if it first saw the light on paper, or if it was created directly at the console... but anyway, it then became a real "music sheet" work.

Well, certainly not all edits have the potential to be published on paper...

I could imagine, that this not only a process of putting things together differently, but also of putting parts back where they arose originally. As I understand often parts, that have been written for one scene get edited out because the scene gets shortened or decision is made against music later. Then the one or the other piece might be reused in another place. But the OST then gives the composer the opportunity to put things back to where they originally emerged. Could be one reason.

This is why I ask if these "EDITS" sometime also exists on paper...

Those works have been published : Seven Years In Tibet / Palace Invitation / Heinrich's Odyssey / Regaining A Son / Seven Years In Tibet (Reprise).

I don't have accesss to these music sheets, do the partitions exactly match the edits featured on the OST?

Are you referring to the very end of the films credits where it ends? Because I've been wanting to ask-the 2.5 Raiders March ends similarly to the way it does in the film, whereas the album version it goes on for another minute. Which version does the film use? I just assumed they faded it out really early to go along with the credits ending but then there's this shorter version of the Raiders March which implies they used that ending...Idk what the differences are.

He's asking about the quiet coda that appears at the end of OST track 1, DCC track 1, and Concord track 22.

We assume it was recorded along with with rest of the full end credits cue, then not included in the published sheet that became what orchestras around the world play as "The Raiders March".  But without having access to JW's handwritten original sketch or an actual recording session leak we can't 100% confirm.

Sorry, forgot to type 2.5 minute version, which I thought was on the 2008 release, but I don't see it in the track listing. But this is the track I'm referring to, just in low quality. It ends sooner than 'Washington Ending & Raiders March' does, I was just curious if there's a difference that I didn't know about.
