Jay 37,346
Basically John Williams wrote a six minute cue called 12M2 End Credits Part 2. He put the entire 6 minute cue as the first track of the score album and titled it "Raiders of the Lost Ark" there. Him and/or some music editor or something crafted some weird 2 1/2 minute cut-down version to end the album for unknown reasons, and titled that track "The Raiders March". For the final film, Spielberg had to edit out small sections of the 6 minute cue to fit the runtime, including dropping the entire coda. Williams published "The Raiders March" sheet music for orchestras to plays in concert, that was the original 6 minute cue, except without the coda included. The DCC album made 2 all-new edits of that six minute cue -- a short edit that removed Marion's theme but kept the coda to open the album, and the full cue without the coda to end the album. This second edit matches the popular concert / re-recordings track, and closely resembled the film's own end credits (which as mentioned also dropped the coda) The Concord album ended with the full six minute cue. The fifth disc in the box set opened with the OST's weird 2 1/2 minute edit. Brando

Brando 1,860
Well, the track that opens disc 5 isn't completely clean, after the final beat as its fading, there's the first drum beat from the coda. Wondering if they just faded it out there for that specific edit instead of using the clean ending.
Jay 37,346
It might be like that everywhere, and not recorded in sections at all. I have no idea - I never checked. Doesn't seem natural at all, but who knows what processing was done to the recordings. As @Brandomentioned, the disc 5 Concord version (which I think you said was taken from the album master) seems to close with either a flubbed note, or the first note of the coda (perhaps JW recorded the first note of the coda at the end of the previous section, to assist with editing the overlap to the coda). Jay 37,346
It's a great question about how a producer would handle that music in a future expansion. Option 1 - put the Königgrätzer March with the timpani overlay mixed into in the main program; Put each discrete cue clean in the bonus tracks Option 2 - put the Königgrätzer March clean in the main program, put the timpani overlay clean in the bonus tracks Option 3 - put the timpani overlay clean in the main program, put the Königgrätzer March in the bonus tracks Option 4 - put the Königgrätzer March with the timpani overlay mixed into in either the main program or the bonus tracks; don't release the clean discrete versions at all etc etc Brando
Holko 9,516
The film edits the recording with percussion introducing it instead of the fanfare, and a fabricated reprise ending after the extended percussion. The main program should have that edit with the timpani overlay and the bonus section should have the full original take with no timpani.

I’d be very surprised to see the timpani presented on its own, either in the main program or as a bonus. I’d go for march with the timpani overdub in the main program, with the undubbed march as a bonus, potentially (if there’s space). Holko 9,516
It'd be pretty weak presented like the leaked version, with the timpani just added over the percussion that leads it out, the final flourish leading to nothing.

It's going to depend hugely on how the overlay came to be, i.e. SS requested or JW intended it originally, and if the former, how happy JW was with the final result as standalone music. Ultimately I'm sure we'd love all sorts of alternates and layers to be presented, but I fear we must be realistic, given that JW approves these sets with listenability still very much in mind. crumbs and BrotherSound

Brando 1,860
That timpani is glorious and satisfying. We're thinking a film score presentation would be 2 discs right? If it is and has plenty of room left over on disc 2, placing it on either disc 1 or 2 (depending on running time and where it would sit), I don't see why it couldn't be there. If not, I'm sure it'd fit snuggly right next to all the alternates. crumbs
crumbs 14,306
Isn't JW's original musical intention for the Hitler confrontation 0:00-0:48 here? Start this track at the 2:00 minute mark of Jay's video above and it syncs perfectly. So what was the scoring timeline here? Did JW record the Königgrätzer march, intended as source music only, followed by the above score cue (to accompany the Hitler confrontation), then Spielberg found the tone way too dark (which it is, but I can see why JW approached it that way), so they came up with the timpani overdub + fake/edited ending for the march at the last minute? Here's all the pics JKMS posted to their insta Good eyes identifying this as "Indiana Jones On The Train", I thought it might have said "Indiana Jones on the Tank" lol Then 1M2 The Cross of Coronado. Crazy. When we will find out what the first cue in the track is called? Right? I certainly never would have guessed it! So, I wonder if the first part of this scene originally played without music; there’s no overlap indication at the beginning of 7M3 as there often is where cues are meant to be continuous. It’s hard to imagine with how familiar this music and scene are to most of us, but I can kind of imagine it, using the sudden burst of Indy’s theme out of nowhere when the motorcycle first appears out of the crate. If I had to guess, I bet the unknown cue is probably called something like 7M1 New Start or 7M1 New Beginning.
Brando 1,860
I have several questions I've wanted to ask so I figured I'd ask in one post- 1. So I know inserts are recorded after the fact when the director asks for a change or the film is re-edited and the music no longer fits the mood/scene, so when it comes to overlays/sweeteners, how does that work? The circus organ sweetener in the opening of TLC, for example, the second unreleased overlay is like 5 seconds or so long, and the first ones a bit longer, so was that also recorded after the fact or was it in the main session for that cue and JW chose not to put it on the OST? 2. How much longer is the Finale from TLC? I asked about this before but didn't think to ask how much longer it might be. What I'm asking about is the crescendo of the Grail theme as it transitions to the Raiders theme. It plays over the shot when Henry says 'Illumination'. I think it was Crumbs who mentioned that in the behind the scenes doc of the music of the Indy trilogy you can almost hear it but George Lucas starts talking and it cuts off too soon. However, that doesn’t mean they didn’t do some takes sans coda, and it’s notable that a different take is used for the coda than the proceeding section (I believe the numbers 147 and 149 at the top indicate selected takes): For what it’s worth, I don’t hear any hint of the coda in the DCC version of the End Credits, and it doesn’t sound artificially faded out, either. Jay 37,346
I don't think there's any performance differences Well, depending on which source you use, I guess. The original 1977 analog edit of that track has only been released on CD on the 1980s 2-CD set. Sony remastered the album master with all its analog edits in 2015, but those reissues were only released digitally, not on CD. The 1994 4-CD box set contained a new digital edit overseen by Ford Thaxton (who used the wrong takes at a few points throughout the ANH portion) The 2018 Sony demaster would be another new digital edit, they should have used the right takes but who knows...
