Great show and good to see it's available now. Thank you very much for saying this, pub. It was a lot of work, but it paid off well. I want to publicly thank Daniel Champion of Ipswich Film Theatre for reaching out to me out back in October with this idea of doing something together to celebrate Williams and Goldsmith. It was a truly splendid collaboration with him. I suggested to bring The Goldsmith Odyssey on board, as both me and Yavar were trying to find a way to do a joint episode of our shows and this looked like the perfect opportunity. As Daniel says at the beginning of the video, the original project was to have a dedicated strand at the theatre itself, with projections of Williams- and Goldsmith-scored movies, but Covid cancelled all those plans, sadly. We decided to go ahead nonetheless with this online event, which turned much more epic than we initially hoped. We were considering to have 2-3 guests, but as we started to throw ideas on the table, we reached out to people who we thought could be great guests and basically all of them said yes. It was really touching to see all these amazing people showing their love and respect for Jerry and John. We got the perfect mix of historical approach and fun facts. I'm very happy that we went this way and chose to post-produce the event. I offered my services as producer and video editor and took charge of post-production. I'm very happy that the final product looks nice and flowing. Another thing I really wanted to do was using cool pictures throughout that conversation and I'm happy to say that we were able to clear usage for every photo I used--I didn't want to google and steal pictures from all over the place, like many "content creators" do on the internet. The Newman family granted permission for many of the archival pictures and they were incredibly nice and helpful. I hope this will remain as a document for future historians and also simple fans who want to understand better these two giants of modern music. Thor 7,504
Yes, let me join the salutations. I had to tune out after about 97 minutes because it was getting late over here (how much longer did it last?), but some fine stories and opinions all around. A couple of comments: On paper, you had far too many guests and far too many moderators to allow for a decent conversation flow (I always get stressed out while watching big Zoom chats where some of the participants don't get to speak for a long time), but as publicist said above, it helped considerably that you edited the material afterwards. Of course, in my ideal world, I would have limited it to Williams only and focussed exclusively on obscure stuff from the early past etc., but that was not this program's goal. With people from so many different areas of expertise, and with so many possible angles, it's bound to bounce around a lot. But I think you would benefit from cutting down the numbers the next time, and possibly also limit it to one moderator (I can understand why everyone wanted to be involved, though). Perhaps even have more of a specified angle. In any case, great work, guys! Each of the persons on that panel was a treasure trove of information (even Jeff Bond, with whom I have a decades-long feud).
Popular Post Ricard 2,245
In regard to the number of participants, I think that one of the reasons it works so well is precisely the fact that it brings together so many "big names" in film music simultaneously, beyond the valuable information and anecdotes, making it, as the name suggests, a true celebration of the two great masters. The emotional aspect of such an achievement gives it a value that transcends the practical and informative sense. crumbs, 12-Mile Reef, Incanus and 8 others 9

Such an interesting and informative musician. I'm glad too. We made a point of inviting several people who knew both Jerry and John, and Slatkin knew them both the longest so he was an obvious priority. I met him years ago when I arranged a couple of signing events for him at the Santa Fe Opera (where he did an amazing job conducting Samuel Barber's Vanessa, which I'm sure a lot of film music fans would love if they tried it). We struck up a conversation about his connection to film music and he shared his personal email address to keep in touch. Two years later I contacted him about being my first interviewee for The Goldsmith Odyssey, and he graciously agreed:https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/824863-odyssey-interviews-leonard-slatkin Then I put him in touch with Maurizio, who also interviewed him for The Legacy of John Williams: https://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2019/05/16/leonard-slatkin-podcast/ David Newman is another Maurizio and I have both interviewed:https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/1000935-odyssey-interviews-david-newmanhttps://thelegacyofjohnwilliams.com/2019/05/31/david-newman-podcast/ So the two of them had a history not only with Jerry and John, but with both our podcasts, which is why they made perfect anchors for this discussion. Popular Post publicist 4,643
Slatkin for sure was the *warmest* interviewee of the lot. I picked up all the important characteristics of JG/JW over the years, so these things tend to become a bit repetitive, this was still a nice mix and a) a reminder that many of these guys will not be around much longer, so it's important to record their aural history and b) that session musicians like Lang probably are a treasure trove of given the time to prepare their answers. I'd push for more anecdotal stories, because they often can fill blind spots. A belated trivia: someone working at Universal once revealed on FSM that he overheard Goldsmith and Williams in the Universal canteen, Goldsmith complaining to Williams about Ridley Scott around the time of his Legend rejection. So it seems there was a certain social overlap between them, more than the talk let on. TownerFan, Yavar Moradi and mahler3 2
