By way of celebration, I've uploaded a rare, very long interview from 1983 JW conducted with Robert Lurtsema on NPR. I've been sitting on this for awhile; not sure it's been heard since '83! What a treat, @Falstaft! Thank you so much for providing this to us! Aural manna from heaven on this most special day! EDIT: At around 7:30 in Part 2 of the interview, JW is asked to explain what work he leaves to the orchestrator in his scores. And JW's response to that question is the most lucid explanation for what an orchestrator does, in an explain-like-I'm-five kind of way (but not the least bit condescending). What a joy it is to now actually know what that role involves. Falstaft

Popular Post Once 605
A very happy birthday to my favourite composer. Wether listening to a John Williams score for the first or the hundredth time there are always new surprises to find, and that is why I almost listen to his music every day. While I don't have the time to contribute much to these forums, not a day goes by where I don't think about how lucky I am to know this website and to be a small part of a community celebrating a composer whose legacy is still being written. Perhaps this year will be the year I finally get to experience him perform live! I'm crossing my fingers! Hip, hip, hooray! Yes, indeed - I raise the glass right now - all the best to the Maestro! Looking forward to the stellar discussion panel in less than two hours. <3 "I can't wait to go back", "I would love to go back" - maybe there is a positive force (pun intended) in the universe that makes his (birthday?) wish come true, although he and us have been incredibly lucky already; just seems like an awful waste of time. (not to him, I'm sure he kept himself busy with music and composing) Cheers! *clink* To his very good health and the future!

Popular Post JasonTHX 21
On his 89th birthday, I look at John Williams’s first film score which was not composed for Spielberg or Lucas in Hollywood. It was for a provincial government official in Newfoundland and Labrador when Williams was a young member of the U.S. Air Force. I live just minutes away from the little downtown building where this score was recorded (it's still there) and the library (also still there) where he would find local provincial melodies usually sung by fishermen. https://setthetape.com/2018/09/21/the-story-of-john-williams-first-film-score/ Jay, Miguel Andrade, The Illustrious Jerry and 2 others 4
