Happy National Film Score Day!

 

National Film Score Day was created on April 3rd, 2018 by Jeffrey D. Kern of the defunct internet film music radio station MOVIE SCORES AND MORE RADIO, and is officially recognized by the National Day Calendar. National Film Score Day “was created to celebrate film scores and the talented composers that compose those musical masterworks called film scores!” Jeffery was interviewed last week about the holiday on the Celebration Voices Podcast.

 

We’ve only officially celebrated National Film Score Day here at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO once, but I would like for it to be something we celebrate every April 3rd.

 

We commemorated National Film Score Day with 12 tracks chosen at random on today’s special broadcast. I didn’t know what I wanted to do to celebrate the occasion, so I decided to do my best to incorporate the number 4 into the festivities, as today is the 4th anniversary of the event! I went into my digital library and made a smart playlist to collect all of the 4-minute cues in my collection. Everything was reduced to 760 as a result of this. I didn’t want to waste an entire day trying to choose 12 tracks from that list, so I went to random.org and had them choose the cues for me. Each track was assigned a number and the playlist was arranged alphabetically by title. After that, I began recording and did the random draw “live” therefore I had no idea what I was going to play.

 

This was a lot of fun and I hope to do something like this again in the near future. See the entire playlist on our webpage.

Two years ago this month, host and producer Randy Andrews brought his film music podcast SOUNDTRACK ALLEY to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. We’ve enjoyed the partnership immensely and his show has brought a new dimension to the podcast in the form of long-formed reviews and analyses of soundtracks. However, we felt the need to separate our version of the show from the version that he still produces on his own under the SOUNDTRACK ALLEY moniker. Therefore, all SOUNDTRACK ALLEY episodes produced expressly for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO will now be known as THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS.

The format of the show won’t change. It will always remain a deep dive review into some of the best soundtracks of all time… scores that everyone should have in their collections… THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS.

 

On this premiere episode of the newly rebranded THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, host Randy Andrews and Erik Woods talk about the film and score to the 1984 Nick Castle-directed sci-fi/fantasy/adventure film, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, starring Lance Guest, Robert Preston, Dan O’Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, Norman Snow, and Kay E. Kuter. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan, a teenager recruited by an alien defence force to fight in an interstellar war.

 

Randy and Erik also detail the numerous themes in the score, the recording of the soundtrack, the composition and form of the action material, and the heart behind the music, especially the finale cue “Into The Starscape”

 

The original score for the film was composed by Craig Safan and was recorded by Lyle Burbridge in Los Angeles. The original soundtrack recording was originally released on Southern Cross Records both on CD and LP in 1987. Intrada Records expanded the album both in 1995 and 2015. Earlier this year, Intrada released the definitive release of the score featuring the same program as the 2015 version but with greatly improved sound quality. Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You’ll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk’s death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy’s underappreciated score.

 

WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven’t seen the new series yet, you’ve been warned;  there are SPOILERS in this episode.

 

STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson.

 

The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film’s release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, and McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. The Project Consultant was Lukas Kendall, with liner notes by liner notes by Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall.

INTERVIEW WITH PANU AALTIO
 

Today’s guest on TALKING SOUNDTRACKS has composed music for more than thirty feature films, several TV shows, video games, and a lengthy ballet performed by the Finnish National Opera. His name is Panu Aaltio.

Panu is most recognized for his poignant work on major nature documentaries, but his lyrical orchestral sound has also adorned dramatic scores, including SUPER FURBALL SAVES THE FUTURE and the exciting Baltic Sea adventure FINDERS OF THE LOST YACHT.

 

Another of his recent projects is 5000 Blankets, released in the US at the end of 2022, which follows the story of a woman and her young son, who set out to find her husband when he goes missing after having a mental breakdown, which sparks a movement in their city.

 

Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Panu via cleanfeed in Helsinki, Finland, at the end of January 2023. They discussed his work for television and film, his award-winning music for nature documentaries, his aspirations for the future, and of course, his amazing score for 5000 BLANKETS.

In this episode, David Coscina catches up with Christopher Willis on his recent work, which includes the incredible music for the episode DEMON 79 from the TV series BLACK MIRROR as well as his lyrical score for the feature animated film LAMYA’S POEM.

 

Willis is an Emmy Award-winning composer, arranger, songwriter, and pianist whose diverse career spans film and television soundtracks, interactive media, popular music, and concert works. He trained as a concert pianist at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later as a musicologist, earning a PhD in eighteenth-century music from Cambridge University.

 

His film work includes THE DEATH OF STALIN and THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD, while his work in television spans projects such as VEEP, MICKY MOUSE CARTOON SHORTS, and SCHMIGADOON! He has also recently worked as an orchestral arranger on Eva Cassidy’s I Can Only Be Me, recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra.

On May 1, 1999, Erik Woods had the great pleasure of premiering the soundtrack to STAR WARS: EPISODE I - THE PHANTOM MENACE by John Williams to the world on his soundtrack radio program, CINEMATIC SOUND. Little did he know that while his show was on the air, the server and network at Mohawk College, the home of C101.5 FM, were dying... and it was all because of this show. Here's the story of how a little soundtrack radio program disrupted internet service at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, for three days!

CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO | A TRIBUTE TO DOUGLASS FAKE - INTRADA RECORDS

 

In this episode, CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO pays tribute to a genuine soundtrack hero and pioneer… Intrada Records founder, Douglass Fake, who passed away at the age of 72 on July 13, 2024.

 

Who was Douglass Fake? Well, one of Doug’s closest friends and colleagues, Joe Sikoryak, wrote a beautiful obituary a few days after Doug’s passing on Facebook.

I personally never met Doug, but I did communicate with him and Roger Fiegelson, Intrada’s executive producer, many times when requesting albums to play on my soundtrack show, which began in 1996. Doug and the rest of the crew at Intrada have been supporting the show for over 25 years, and I do remember Doug telling me that if I ever needed anything, I should call or email him or Roger and they’d send whatever I requested down immediately. It didn’t matter if it was a new release or a release that came out ten years ago; if they had it in stock, they’d send it down.

 

We planned to release this episode a few weeks ago but a few things popped up that slowed down production (work and illnesses). On top of that, the fine folks at Intrada Records were guests on Robert Emmett’s soundtrack radio program “The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show,” where they produced their own three-hour tribute show to Doug on Saturday, August 24, 2024. So, not to step on any toes, I decided to delay the release of my own tribute show today.

 

So, on today’s show, we’ll be playing not only selections from Intrada’s extensive soundtrack library, but also messages of remembrance from fans such as Amer Zahid, Chris Malone, Ian Clark, Jason Drury, Jim Wilson, Nick Zwar, Lee Wileman, and Victor Field.

NEW EPISODE | TALKING SOUNDTRACKS: INTERVIEW WITH EMILIO AUDISSINO
 

In 2014, author, film studies academic, and film musicologist Emilio Audissino published the first edition of his book THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS.

In 2021, the book’s second edition was published. While focusing on John Williams’ music and career by analyzing the composer’s approach to writing music, the book also discussed three significant film scores in Williams’ filmography: JAWS, DRACULA, and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. To commemorate the book’s tenth anniversary, they discussed its origins and delved into John Williams’ musical career, featuring music from many of the composer’s most memorable scores.

On today’s program, I’m celebrating the 28th anniversary of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, which began on September 20th, 1996, at CHMR / C101.5 FM at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. The station is now called INDI 101.

 

For all of our anniversary programs, and yes, some years I forget to do one, I try to create something new. Sometimes it’s clever, and other times it’s just a simple, dumb idea that’s relatively simple to implement. This show is the latter. Since the show is now 28 years old, I’ve decided to base it on that number.

 

So, you’ll hear tracks that are either 28 seconds long, scores that are 28 years old, films with the number 28 in the title, the 28th track on the album, take place in 1928, or were written in 1928 featuring composers Mark Snow, John Murphy, Charlie Chaplin, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Terence Blanchard, Joseph Conlon, Marc Sharman, David Arnold, and Dominic Frontiere.

 

Admittedly, this is silly, but it was quite enjoyable to put together. In any case, I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Christophe Beck, an Emmy-winning film and television composer, has defined the sound of iconic productions such as FROZEN, THE HANGOVER franchise, THE MUPPETS and the cult classic series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.

 

Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG.

 

But first, they talked about another of Beck's recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which was directed by Doug Liman and starred Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners—a desperate father and an ex-con who are thrown together to steal the illicit wealth of a corrupt politician. When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos.

TALKING SOUNDTRACKS: THE MUSIC OF JOHNNY DOUGLAS

On September 10th, 2024, the music from the Marvel animated series DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS was released by Dulcima Records on 10th September, exactly 40 years after the show premiered in the UK.

 

The show’s music was written by British composer Johnny Douglas, who, in addition to having a diverse career in film and television, was the composer of music for Marvel’s animated series in the 1980s, which included SPIDER-MAN, SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS, THE INCREDIBLE HULK, G.I. JOE, and TRANSFORMERS. His filmography includes the classic 1965 sci-fi adventure CRACK IN THE WORLD and the British children’s classic THE RAILWAY CHILDREN.

 

Louise Camby, Johnny Douglas’ granddaughter, is currently researching a book on his life and career called TRACKS TO MY GRANDFATHER’S SUCCESS, and in October 2024 she spoke with Jason Drury about her grandfather’s life and work, how the book was coming along, and how, by chance, she discovered music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS in Johnny Douglas’ archives.

 

During the show, we’ll hear music from DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, as well as other music from Johnny Douglas’ career.

Welcome to Cinematic Sound Radio’s celebration of the 35th anniversary of Film Score Monthly.

 

In 1990, a young film music fan named Lukas Kendall began what was to become Film Score Monthly with a Xeroxed newsletter sent to a handful of fans who signed up to receive the snail mail newsletter. From there, the newsletter turned into one of the biggest soundtrack publications in the world. The magazine’s run ended in 2005 at 150 issues. It ceased printing due to budgetary reasons. The magazine, however, still lives on in the digital world as FSM On-Line.

 

A byproduct of the magazine was a record label, which began in 1998 with the release of Jerry Goldsmith’s STAGECOACH / THE LONER. Lukas would go on to produce 250 FSM CDs, many of them long-sought-after “holy grails.” The label would cease production in 2013.

The website and popular message board are still running, but are in desperate need of updating. That’s where you come in.

 

Lukas is currently raising money on Kickstarter to help fund a brand-new website, message board, book, CD and more! As of the release of this episode on June 20th, 2025, the Kickstarter has reached its initial goal of $25,000 and is currently in its stretch run to raise an additional $25,000.
