Blizzard of Souls (2021) - Lolita Ritmanis

Anyone else also heard this score? It's pretty good. Very dark and dramatic, but with some touching moments.

Here's Jon Broxton's review of the score:

Quote

Scores like Blizzard of Souls offer a perfect reminder that there is a whole world of outstanding film music that exists outside the boundaries of ‘traditional Hollywood’ if only people are willing to look beyond them. Yes, Lolita Ritmanis is American, and is a respected member of the Los Angeles film music community, both through her work as a composer, and as a leader with organizations like the Alliance for Women Film Composers. But think about what sort of film Blizzard of Souls is, how traditionally obscure its origins are, and how astonishing it is this music came to be acknowledged and championed by the Oscars. Enormous kudos should go to La-La Land Records for helping release it, and enormous kudos should go to the members of the Music Branch of the Academy for pre-nominating a score purely on the quality of the music rather than the profile of the film it accompanies. They need to do that more often. As for Lolita Ritmanis; she has been rightly lauded in her ancestral home for this score, and the response she has been getting in the United States is a long overdue acknowledgement of her talent.

LLL has been selling that CD since 2019.  This is considered a 2021 score?

It’s considered a 2020 score by the Oscars. I guess that’s when the film got an international release? That’s why it’s on the recently released 15 score Oscar shortlist for last year.

Right, it's absolutely considered a 2020 film by the Oscars as well as in just about every country except the one it was made in -- I mentioned 2021 because it's in the thread title

Presumably because Jon Broxton’s review is new and a lot of people’s first exposure to it.

It’s a miracle she landed more votes for example than Zimmer for WW84.

If she gets the nomination, it would be an insane accomplishment. The awards consultant on this score definitely needs a raise to get it this far.

Also Oscars decide eligibility based on film release than soundtrack release. So the soundtrack could be released 2 years before or after the movie. But the score is eligible in the year the film releases. Remember for the Oscars , the award represents what’s heard in the film than on any album.
