I've never been particularly attached to either franchise, although I do remember renting the 76 KONG for a birthday party as a kid. Obviously the deaf kid with the Kong doll is Kong's girl, while Billy Bobby Brown seems to be in Godzilla's corner even though he stepped on her brother in 2014. That'd get old fast if they made 30+ movies like the 1954 film. That one is certainly great, but the character evolved and transcended it and became the flagship of a wildly imaginative universe. He became such an icon that he's really sort of a blank slate, you can project almost anything you want to him in whichever flick you pick.
