Jay 37,287
From the new album Songs of Solitude by Hiyoli Togawa: Quote Last year, my friend José Serebrier connected me with a Berlin based virtuoso Violist named Hiyoli Togawa. She was getting composers to write short pieces for her with the subject being the solitude of living through the pandemic. I’m very proud to have my work “Perfect Time For A Spring Cleaning” appear on her new album “Songs of Solitude”, released today on BIS records. https://www.facebook.com/johnpowellmusic/posts/2819982834891667 or https://www.instagram.com/p/CMCzeExhquk/ https://open.spotify.com/album/13d3x2iI62n0kDmkKW10qt?si=BX86qc4zTUOfBpoQQHnLSQhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_ngTEt0FSjpNBUUUCnHIVYXCNu9VYaFUwYhttps://music.apple.com/us/album/songs-of-solitude/1552233712https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08T4H7DY1https://tidal.com/browse/album/173930242https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/songs-of-solitude-hiyoli-togawa/bb7h36ypbj5ec Muad'Dib
Fabulin 3,510
Jay created a thread for a piece of classical music? Run guys, the end is nigh! Jay and SteveMc
Thor 7,468
I don't know what to make of that. A bunch of pizzicato strings going nowhere fast? I prefer Elfman's take on the lockdown in his recent songs.
SilverTrumpet 638
I kinda dug it. Even weird sounding music like that is good when done right.

Will 2,215
It's a very fun little piece! This part is classic Powell:
Anthony 572
I love it. Even though it's only for a single type of instrument, it's still sounds exactly like John Powell! The Illustrious Jerry and Yavar Moradi

I think this is a bit reductive. Listen to the arc of the piece: Starting just with a busy, preoccupied ostinato, sounding very tense; then adding color via the light pizz harmony patterns in the background, leading to a joyous theme in chords in typical Powell-fashion, finally calming down again. Referring to the title, to me this evokes starting a cumbersome task with push-through-determination, then slowly getting into the flow of things, time flies by, and before you know, you're done. /edit: Just bought the album. This is exactly what I need to counterbalance all the big orchestra music I've listened to lately. Thanks Jay for posting! Thor 7,468
Alas, didn't do much for me. For a similar, and better approach to the same subject matter - sort of - listen to the montage sequence from REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.
Muad'Dib 1,801
Loved it! Creme de la creme Powell.

Tom Guernsey 2,280
https://www.classicstoday.com/review/songs-of-solitude-a-musical-journal-for-viola/ "By contrast, John Powell’s vivacious Perfect Time for a Spring Cleaning is like a madcap hornpipe where Togawa multitracks nine separate viola parts that petulantly scramble for equal attention. This may be my favorite among the commissions..." Great for a film composer to great such great notices on a classical site, even more impressive that they don't even reference his day job... embarrassingly, I've not bought this album yet, but time to rectify.
