So same as before but this time with the 80's. The idea is again to organise the JWFan's own Academy Awards with the same nominees and every John Williams scores even the ones that weren't nominated.

To me the 1980 ceremony has been the most aberrant mistake the Oscars have ever made (and they have made a lot) so I've decided to separate it in two parts that people could vote more easily...

ROTFLMAO

Huh, what a bummer that The Wrath of Khan and Conan The Barbarian weren't even nominated in 1982

EDIT: And Blade Runner too

Yeah I would have prefer them to Gandhi but to be frank none of them would have win anyway

Never really understand why the Oscars decided to create so much categories that they immediately drop after few years specially as they weren't interresting in the first place.

OK, so I guess we're doing this.

In any case, I'll do the same routine for all of them.

My selections in the poll are easily viewable, so I won't repeat them here.

But interesting to compare them to my favourite scores of each year:

1980: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - John Williams (nominated, but didn't win)

1981: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK - John Williams (nominated, but didn't win)

1982: BLADE RUNNER - Vangelis (not nominated - an outrage!)

1983: RETURN OF THE JEDI - John Williams (nominated, but didn't win)

1984: THE NEVERENDING STORY - Giorgio Moroder & Klaus Doldinger (not nominated)

1985: LADYHAWKE - Andrew Powell (not nominated)

1986: ALIENS - James Horner (nominated, but didn't win -- but I voted for THE MISSION in the poll anyway, because it's the biggest misstep in Oscar history)

1987: EMPIRE OF THE SUN - John Williams (nominated, but didn't win)

1988: MIDNIGHT RUN - Danny Elfman (not nominated)

1989: THE ABYSS - Alan Silvestri (not nominated - another outrage!)

The song categories, I can give or take.

I almost voted for Jerry in 82 with Poltergeist, but the E.T. score is too great to be overlooked.

But this was the era of the wrong scores winning. It's sad that classics like Empire, Raiders, Morricone's The Mission and Goldsmith's Under Fire lost to inferior competitors.

The 80s

CONAN

BTTF

BATMAN

the three great symphonic works, ignored.😒

To me Rosenthal's Clash of the Titans was besides Williams' work another top highlight of the 80s. But maybe I was too young to be objective and too easy to impress. And nobody cares about the movie anymore anyway.

That's another of the JW copycat scores.

Why do Empire and Raiders say "unofficial winner" in parenthesis in the options?

I mean, beyond the obvious, considering this is a JWFAN-forum... ;)

Is it based on votes? Then how come not the same for, for example Jedi, ToD and Empire of the Sun, or to mention a non-JW score,The Mission?

I plead guilty.

It's just a personal opinion and joke. ESB is my favourite score ever (if I would have to choose only one) and Raiders would be close (I'm not the Raiders of the SoundtrArk for no reason ;)). Now I've decided to mention only those two because they are the two times where I absolutely can't understand at all the Academy, plus it would have been quite a lot to put this mention for every year (so only two the master and the apprentice :P)

I also would have liked to see Goldsmith's "Legend" in 85 under the nominees. In my opinion better than for example Witness from Maurice Jarre.

It wasn't in the version released in America

BLADE RUNNER would get my vote if it had been among the nominees, but yeah - hard to beat E.T. Incidentally, those two scores constituted two of the three analysis chapters in my thesis. 1982 was a great year!

When you have two equally great scores I always come down on the side of the film I Like better .

Like A.I. vs. A BEAUTIFUL MIND

So E.T. gets the nod

Hi folks, first time post here. Great to join a community of people who love John's music as much as I do :)

That said, just wanted to say that most of these choices are easy, but I struggled with 1987. I love John's work but I'm a lover of film music in general and I have to say Sakamoto's work on The Last Emperor was very good. And another of my favorite scores is in there as well, Morricone's Untouchables. Then again, Empire of the Sun is absolutely fantastic.

One of those years that deserves more than one winner I think :)

I'd agree, it's a very hard choice between The Untouchables and The Last Emperor but I would rate both higher than Empire of the Sun.

And yet, watching the Cadillac of the Skies scene still gives me goosebumps!
