My theory about why the Indy box was discussed but didn't progress suddenly making more and more sense... 

 

I'm just glad we won't have a repeat of the TLJ situation where we didn't have confirmation until right before Williams saw the film. It shows how highly JW is rated by Disney/Lucasfilm he's up there with Harrison Ford on their announcement of the key 3.

 

I cannot believe he'll be writing new Indy music in around six months time... what a time to be alive!

That would be a dream year. Final Indy score in July and potentially a final Spielberg collaboration in December, which brings their partnership full circle. I can't think of a better way to go out.

Yeah, I think he'll also score both Indy 5 and Little Spielberg. The latter probably won't demand a huge score, which means Williams can write a 40-50 minutes score that'll do just fine. 

 

If all goes according to plan, he'll write Indy 5 later in 2021 and record it in Jan or Feb of next year. After that, he can dedicate himself to Spielberg's movie.

I dearly hope it isn't, but it just seems a fitting bookend to their collab (certainly moreso than The Post).

I'lll believe that if JW is presented with a near finish cut (wishful thinking) AND can go through a real spotting session with the director AND if Mangold does tweak its film to death to the point where JW score is destroyed to pieces

I KNEW IT! Not surprised, but still nice to have official confirmation. Hopefully the Maestro will also be able to score Steven Spielberg’s next film in addition to Indy V, especially considering how personal that next film is. Very awesome and totally exciting!

Somehow I get the feeling Williams wouldn't have signed on for this if he knew it would be anything like an Abrams collaboration. Mangold seems a much more assured, confident director. 

 

Plus Indy films are traditionally less reliant on VFX than Star Wars, so realistically he'll be scoring a more locked edit than the ever-changing Abrams films.

Phoebe Waller Bridge is literally the only thing of interest there for me, she is fantastic. But meh overall I'm afraid. I have no doubt they'll waste her.

Just to know JWFan has been given another Williams score to look forward to and to anticipate together is immensely exciting. I'm so thrilled. 

 

If you'd told me that in the span of 10 years, Williams would be working with the likes of Rian Johnson, JJ Abrams, and James Mangold, I would have called you crazy. It's so neat that Williams has gotten to spend what could have easily been his retirement era working with an entirely new generation of filmmakers that have all come to dominate the industry in different ways.

Spielberg is still involved with Indy V. He is a producer for the film. Similar to how he was a producer for Memoirs of a Geisha.

I'm convinced the film will be a wash in any case, but I just hope we get a nice album out of it. The most exciting thing about this is the idea of Williams working with a new director.

That's a nice way to look at it. But don't forget that it's very much the other way around, i.e. a younger generation of filmmakers being involved in established franchises where JW is the de facto musical authority you cannot push away, as he's still very much eager to contribute.
