Popular Post Alex 2,833
Unfortunately the sequel trilogy didn't really allow for JW to let loose with a lot bombastic action music, but the music at the beginning of TLJ will always be one of my favourite musical moments, especially the complete version. It has basically everything: Reworkings of motifs and themes from the OT, the musical style of the prequels and the developing of themes from TFA. Popular Post crumbs 14,276
Well said @Alex, it's a brilliant fusion of all three trilogies, and the performance/recording is seriously impressive. You'd swear it was the LSO performing it at the ROTS sessions if you didn't know otherwise. It feels like a close cousin to the Battle Over Coruscant too. What a shame the JJ sequels afforded him so few opportunities to break loose with the orchestra in this vein (and thank fuck for Rian Johnson!) It is hard to fully judge based on the OST track though, because it's so frustratingly cut down (and there's even more unused material they deleted from the film!) The complete version will make a stunning opening track on an expansion someday. Tiburon, Bofur01, Chewy and 6 others

Edmilson 7,266
The OST version is not too bad, there's a clear flow and a "narrative". I just wish it included more performances of Poe's theme like the complete version.

I wonder if it's just because I'm so used to the extended version of the track that the OST edits feel more distracting? I didn't live with the OST version for twenty years like I did with, say, Rescuing Sarah. I will say it's a cleverly condensed presentation of multiple cues with well-hidden microedits. If you didn't know the film version was twice as long you'd be none the wiser. Similar situation with the complete Fathiers, which the OST brilliantly condenses (though I love all the unused music!) Popular Post Raiders of the SoundtrArk 2,423
I would love an even more extended presentation of the Fathiers with all the unused music from the deleted scenes. The extended scene is far longer (5:45) and there is absolutely terrific moments especially the part on the rooftop which is mesmerizing... Popular Post crumbs 14,276
Yes! I haven't heard Williams write anything like that since maybe the Spider escape cue in COS? Sounds like a crazed Russian dance or something, tremendous fun. Raiders of the SoundtrArk, Remco, Smaug The Iron and 1 other
Popular Post Raiders of the SoundtrArk 2,423
Exactly! Actually I think the whole sequence on Canto Bight might be the richest musical sequence of TLJ. There is so much different music style that goes and comes, mixed all around in a well ordered cacophony. There's surely an incredible suite or arrangement to write for the Maestro (if it has not already been made) Smaug The Iron, Falstaft and Remco
Popular Post crumbs 14,276
Yeah even though the Canto Bight scenes are a bit maligned (shame JJ never followed up on any of the themes established on this planet), JW clearly relished the opportunity to channel such a kaleidoscope of musical genres in barely a handful of scenes. It's very eclectic between all the source music, the chase, the golden Hollywood homage. Chewy, Holko, Falstaft and 3 others
Raiders of the SoundtrArk 2,423
I don't know if an expansion would contain all those unreleased and source material but after the ones of RotJ they are certainly the most interresting to get. Really hope that JW will let MM published them like the "golden Hollywood homage" they are
Popular Post WampaRat 1,105
Happy to see this thread. The complete version of “Escape” is killer. (Especially the references to Poe’s theme). And I love how the “Battle of Crait” cue forms a great bookend/complement to it. When the panic/desperation/“ludlow” motif kicks in its just plain awesome. Shame that didn’t pop up again in RoS. What TLJ might seem to lack in new thematic material I’d say it makes up for with its ballsy set pieces. Probably the strongest set pieces of the three sequel scores IMO. Remco, Chewy, Edmilson and 6 others
Popular Post Falstaft 2,097
It's a marvelous set-piece and works gangbusters in the film. Even though, not surprisingly, the actual sequence is something of a Frankenstein's monster of what, 10 individual cues? Some magnificent sections of which we've never heard properly -- esp. 1M6, my goodness. From the standpoint of themes, we've got an all-time best statement of the March of the Resistance (end of 1M4), plus some fantastic iterations of the Rebel Fanfare, First Order, Poe, Main, Force, and (neatly concealed) Leia leitmotifs. Not to mention a little unused theme for Paige, and a [purely accidental] restatement of Finn's motif from TFA with that repurposed TFA-end-title combo of his and Poe's theme. And that all-pervasive Shostakovichian Tension/Resistance-in-Trouble motivic complex! Nor can we forget the Battle of the Heroes moment at the end. If anyone's curious about a deeper dive: this was done before we know what we do now about all the components of this opening sequence, but if you're open in some more music-theoretical treatment of the scene, here's a little article of mine from 2018: https://musicologynow.org/quick-take-motives-modulations-and-the-march-of-the-resistance-in-the-last-jedi/ Romão, Smaug The Iron, Tiburon and 5 others 5
