Joining this esteemed group of musicians is Planning Director SUE MALLET, a member of the LSO family since 1976, who worked closely with John Williams in his projects with the LSO since the early days. The panelists will talk about their fond memories recording and performing with John Williams on such legendary films as the original Star Wars trilogy, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Star Wars prequel trilogy,Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, but also on several other recording projects and live performances. The event is moderated and produced by The Legacy of John Williams’ editor/producer Maurizio Caschetto and film music journalist/concert producer Tim Burden. Looking forward to this one. This is very sweet, thank you so much @mrbellamy. Nothing gives me more joy and motivation than seeing mutual JWfans happy with the work I’m doing. For me, it’s really a labour of love, done in the hope it will be useful material for any student and fan of John Williams’ music out there, to give possibly a wider perspective on his fantastic musical persona. Your support and appreciation means the world to me. Also, I consider myself very lucky to have a such a great collaborator and friend as Tim Burden being a real partner in this. He’s the best. Popular Post mahler3 478
Thanks so much, @TownerFan! Likewise. I really hope you all enjoy this 90 minute conversation and there are so many highlights I know you’ll all enjoy. To add some perspective, remember Ricard created this website alongside the 1999 release of TPM which introduced a new generation to the majesty of Williams. Some of us here were there and many followed. Regardless of when, where or who. This video chat is very much a tribute to the seminal JW & LSO collaboration which many of us grew up with. All 5 guests share so much information and personal anecdotes that you’ll enjoy. We can’t please everyone and perhaps we didn’t talk about your favourite score enough. However, please remember that sometimes the musicians don’t recall as much as we’d like. Indeed - Even during Bouzerau’s DVD / BD interview, John Williams himself admitted that he couldn’t remember much about ‘Jaws 2’ which still makes me chuckle. Maurizio has produced a terrific video for now and for future reference, so thanks in advance for tuning in next week and let’s live in hope for a future LSO collaboration. Thanks for your support and enthusiasm. Popular Post bollemanneke 3,348
Wow, I’m the first person to post after the event? First things first. Thank you to Maurizio and Tim for hosting the conversations. None of this would have happened without you. Thank you to the LSO members for sharing their stories. (Can I say Maxine Kwok is awesome?) I found Sue’s remarks about payment very interesting. She said musicians are still paid per session and that they couldn’t afford to employ anyone. I find this really surprising for such a high-profile orchestra. Is it actually cheaper to pay someone per session? How does that work? She also said John hates takedowns. I am guessing she means arrangements? Could someone notify Nic Rain and the City of Prague Philharmonic? Now? Very interesting observations about how you need so many synths for Horner scores. Never gave it a thought. Is the audio of the LSO cheering for John during the ROTS sessions on YouTube? No stories about Harry Potter. Makes me kind of sad because I am not a Star Wars person at all. I’m so glad I watched this. I will consider it yet another sign that the world is going back to normal. mahler3, Timo Martikainen, TownerFan and 1 other 2
Omen II 1,235
Thank you @TownerFan and @mahler3, that was a very enjoyable discussion. So many great stories, especially hearing David Cripps tell the Leia's theme anecdote (I wonder, was his horn colleague worried about his well-being, or would he have liked to get a shot at it himself? ). Smeltington 1,440
Watched it, loved it! Great guests, great moderators, congrats to all involved! I'm amazed that you were able to talk to someone who played on the recording of the symphony, and that he actually had memories from it after all this time. I was surprised to hear that Williams insisted on so many takes for Star Wars '77, since I always had an impression (maybe it was an assumption) that they would have knocked those sessions out very quickly. And Maxine mentioned something similar about working with him on the prequels, where he motivated the players by pointing out how many more people would hear the recordings they were making, compared to one of the LSO's concerts. Meanwhile the mysteries of Chamber of Secrets will lie in the chamber forever I wonder how much anyone would have had to say about it, though. Clearly the musicians have given Star Wars a lot more thought, since they'll forever be associated with it, and for the younger players, they grew up with it and were inspired by it. Funny that Sue called the LSO "the Star Wars orchestra" and said it's their calling card, when we're always angsting about whether the classical world takes JW seriously. Though she did say something like "too bad it's film music!" implying that the LSO does struggle with getting his music accepted in their circles. I loved the story about Spielberg insisting someone call him at the start of every Williams recording session, so he can hear the first notes recorded! If I were him, I'd make them film the whole thing while they were at it... mahler3 and TownerFan 1

And thank you very dearly for your heartfelt words of appreciation. This was really a labour of love from everyone involved and I'm glad this shows in the final product. It was meant as a celebration of a very unique musical collaboration and that's how it turned out. I'm flattered by the appreciation, really. We even got mentioned by the BBC yesterday during their Newshour programme. They talked with Maxine Kwok and David Cripps, so consider this as a sort of bonus feature. Popular Post SF1_freeze 131
That was really fantastic. I started watching right before midnight only planning to watch 10-20 minutes before going to bed, but then i was glued to the sofa till the end and went to bed with a smile on my face. I loved your selection of music previews and all the pictures/photos of JW and the LSO that were shown at the appropriate spots in the discussion. It was a great moment in the end, when David Cripps directly addressed John Williams (in case he somehow gets to watch this discussion) to personally thank him. Thanks for making that happen! Kudos to you, Maurizio and Tim, and hoping for other similar future video events. Jurassic Shark, crumbs, TownerFan and 1 other 2

WampaRat 1,105
Side note: I never thought of Horner’s scores being really synth heavy. But I guess it depends on which scores you’d want to perform live that would make them a bit more difficult to perform. At least in his 90s-2000s output. Never thought he used them more or less than Goldsmith at least...
