Popular Post WampaRat 1,105
I watched the opening of Fiddler on the Roof yesterday after being inspired by the new MM interview. The insane violin solo (cadenza?) at 7:46 is just so masterful. ( Is this composition in the stage show? Or did Williams arrange it just for the film?) I started thinking of other masterful virtuosos solos in Williams scores. Insane flute solo at :28 in “Rainy Nights, Dementors, and Bird” from HP: POA comes to mind. Or the gorgeous rolling piano opening to end credits of E.T. Any other favorite moments of “virtuosic solos” in JWs scores? (I realize practically 50%of Schindler’s list is an amazing solo performance from Itzhak Perlman lol) Bellosh, Edmilson, publicist and 2 others
Datameister 2,019
The POA flute solo came to mind just from the thread title alone. And of course, let's not forget all the crazy stuff in Hedwig's theme. There are some fun soloistic moments for the piano in Snowy's theme. And doesn't The Terminal have some good stuff for clarinet? (It's been a loooooong time since I've heard that one.) Popular Post The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
A similar albeit more brief example that often comes to mind as a highlight from TLJ. 0:52 to 1:01 is such an awesome isolated passage! Popular Post Steve 588
The horn solo in the beginning of "Leia's Theme" is quite virtuos. The same goes for "Luke and Leia" Holko, Bellosh and SteveMc

Popular Post Tom 4,610
Since you asked nicely, here is a nice little one. The full concert suite gives the flute several moments of crazy fast playing virtuosity, but this one plays like a movement in a concerto (with two flutes). GerateWohl 4,279
Pretty obvious, but I like the two solo cello sections here a lot:

I like listening while looking at the insane score! And my first live to picture concert thing is Azkaban next month in Seoul. I'll be paying particulat attention to it - shame the whole solo isn't in the film. And I recall reading somewhere that some orchestras have used as an audition piece for flutists. That reminds me, I teach freshman English, and one of my students last semester is a flute major - she practices about 5-6 hours a day. I sent her the video, and she was like "nah, I can't play that!" BB-8, WampaRat and Raiders of the SoundtrArk 1

I read that, too. Seems to be widespread — it's included in a recent compilation of flute audition extracts, along with Leia's Theme and Dartmoor, 1912. Some instructor at the University of Georgia has helpfully posted an extract. The performance notes from the editor are fun to read — nice to see the technical aspects of JW's music dissected along with the rest of the greats. pete
