The Marco Beltrami Thread

Anthony

Recommended Posts

While there have been threads dedicated to specific albums of his, I'm surprised to be creating the Marco Beltrami thread. (Either that, or I've failed spectacularly using the search function.)

I find quite a lot of his scores rather challenging, but every so often he'll come along and compeltely knock one out of the park.

Live Free Or Die Hard, A Good Day To Die Hard, Seventh Son and Gods Of Egypt are all spectacular.

Here's a fantastic track from Seventh Son - https://marcobeltrami.com/wp-content/uploads/cue_playlist/seventh-son/59-7m63a-End-Credits-1-Toms-Theme.mp3

I also really like parts of Hellboy, I, Robot, The 3:10 To Yuma, Knowing and Ford V. Ferrari.

Anyone who'd consider themselves a fan - what would you put on a playlist?

Always been a big fan. I don't usually like horror scores, but he manages to capture that kind of melodic, "delicious darkness" that I enjoy. In fact, that's how I discovered him in the 90s, with great scores such as SCREAM and MIMIC. Even when he's doing more textural things, it's always interesting. My favourite scores include, but are not exclusive to, 3:10 TO YUMA, HELLBOY, I AM DINA, IN THE ELECTRIC MIST, MIMIC, SCREAM, THE DANGEROUS LIVES OF ALTAR BOYS, THE GIVER and THE HOMESMAN.

For great introductions, I recommend the old promo FILM MUSIC BY (which is probably hard to find these days) and the more recent MUSIC FOR FILM comp from the WSA academy.

Hellboy, Knowing, Gods of Egypt, The Homesman, 3:10 to Yuma, The Snowman, Soul Surfer, two Die Hard scores and even his The Omen remake. I also like bits of Scream scores.

I never managed to get into Seventh Son but willing to give it another go.

I’m not a big fan of his early horror-based style (T3 is horribly uninteresting to me), but he’s been improving for 20 years and I quite enjoy a lot of his scores, like Knowing, The Giver, Logan, Ford vs Ferrari, etc.

The score for A Quiet Place II is good but this film actually requires unscored moments. All in all a good score to a great film.

Thanks to Varèse releasing digitally some of their Deluxe Editions, I have purchased PAYCHECK (what a score!!) and KNOWING by Beltrami which I really liked back in the days (despite a laughingly bad movie). Once again, I feel that Beltrami's scores don't necessarily need extended versions because the albums are usually very solid. Here, the Deluxe Edition gives away a lot more tension in the first half of the disc and then a truckload of magnificent tracks in the second half. Wonderful score. So happy they get to do digital releases!

Marco Pastrami is a composer, I must admit, I don't know very well yet.

But the day I'll want to dig into his works, I'll probably begin with those:

  • Ford v Ferrari (2019)
  • The Homesman (2014)
  • Soul Surfer (2011)
  • The Hurt Locker (2008)
  • 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

That's a nice selection. I would also suggest you his Max Payne score which is IMO his second best after Ford v Ferrari

Just enjoyed his score to Fear Street pt1 in-film. Don’t know why Beltrami scores so often fall flat for me in listening settings, but maybe this will be one of the good ones!

I enjoyed the scores for all three Fear Streets. Honestly I've kept to myself about it, because I don't imagine they'll get a lot of love around here for some reason. I've revisited them several times outside of the films.

Sorry it's the seventh one if you count:

  • A quiet Place II
  • Chaos Walking
  • The 3 Fear Street
  • Venom 2
  • And this one

Between him and McCreary I feel that they are just two composers left 😂

Good to see Torjussen onboard. I have no idea how much synth there is in this, but he excels in that idiom. His 2014 score for TEST was one of the best scores that year.

Always hoping for more orchestral Beltrami. Is a thriller in the vein of Dangerous Liasons so I hope there's will be some cool noirish string work or something

His Fear Street scores and Venom score from last year were great. But I thought No Exit from a week or so ago was just terrible

Thanks! I tend to stay away from the film threads here, as it gets a bit "close to work", but nice to know it has been noticed.

Does anyone know if the Deep Water score was ever released? Can't find any trace of it on the music platforms or any music sites

I intend to initiate myself to the music of Marco Beltrami with this re-recordings album conducted by Dirk Brossé.

This album is one of many Brossé recorded in the past years on Silva Records to celebrate film music and composers.

For Marco Beltrami fans, he will score The Nun 2 (the first one was scored by Abel Korzeniowski in 2018):

Nothing from THE OMEN? Disappointed.

I did like Korzeniowski's score for the first Nun. Seems unusual to get a high profile composer for the sequel, particularly when these films largely just need atmospheric and crash/bang music.

But otherwise, I, RobotFree Solo, Soul Surfer and whatever he did for Underwater are right up my street.
