The Marco Beltrami Thread

I just got hold of Beltrami's score of Hellboy and must say, that's a much nicer listening experience than Elfman's sequel score, at least out of context.

I was quite disappointed with the score of Logan. And I wonder, did Beltrami ever write something like a trademark memorable theme for anything? He seems to be strong with texture, tension, action and suspense which is perfectfor the horror genre. But nothing I heard so far I really find memorable in terms of melody. Any recommendation for an instant earworm grand Beltrami theme?

Beltrami double bill for me today. Two good scores - no idea how either will hold up to an expanded release, though. Interesting that Beltrami, according to the liner notes, considers Knowing to be his favourite score of his.

I love Knowing, it's the point when I think Beltrami made a permanent improvement in quality. I think Blade II only has a few good cues and they were all on the OST, though.

I didn’t know "Knowing". But you know, those who know "Knowing"... well, they know. You know? It’s one of those 'if you know, you know' situations—except I don’t. So, if you know "Knowing", let us know, because not knowing "Knowing" is starting to feel like something we really should, you know... know.

Beltrami is a third tier film composer at most. Who has a solid as fuck career because most of his work scores a 6.

Never been blown away by anything ive heard of him. Never been especially moved either.

He's fine ....

He's great. He was on fire in the 90s (with MIMIC as my no. 1 favourite). But from ca. 2005, I kinda lost interest a bit. A few good things, but more misses than hits. Now and then, a score comes along that reminds me why I was a fan in the first place, 30 years ago. But it's been a while now, I think maybe THE HOMESMAN a decade ago.

I've seen both BLADE films, but only have sporadic memory of their plots. And remember nothing of the score. But it was 2002, when he was very much "on", so willing to give it a shot.

I think that sort of how I feel about Beltrami. He sort of struck me as one of those technically proficient composers who’s never quite hit it out the ballpark in terms of thematic inspiration and I couldn’t say I really remember much specific from any of his scores, even the ones I really enjoy like Hellboy. I think I was also a bit overexcited about him when he because he studied with Jerry Goldsmith and I guess a little bit of that rubbed off on him but not perhaps as much as I would’ve liked! Having said that, I did enjoy the Brussels compilation of his stuff.

I really liked his scores for Fear Street! Solid horror stuff, melodic and fully orchestral. This is one of my favorite tracks from him in recent years

And his scores for A Quiet Place are nice too. Perhaps not for everyone, but I quite like the two softer main themes, although the action gets a bit too grating for my taste at some points.

It's good news, although I would say the series' music expressed everything that needed to be expressed by the third film. The following fims are fine but the scores are largely a waste of time. I would love to be proven wrong, of course.

Beltrami only had something like two - three weeks to score Scream 4. The Weinsteins wouldn't pay for an orchestra, so Beltrami had to squeeze out a small string session with an overseas orchestra. It was a mess. That's why the score sounds so cheap and, frankly, bad for most of the movie.

I don't think there's anything new to be mined musically here, but I'm happy for Beltrami to leave on a higher note than Scream 4. There's some nice music in 5/6, but they felt very anonymous to me.

I did really enjoy the Scream 5 score, but it never actually felt like a Scream score. Scream 6 had a few nice cues, but only that... a few. Excited to hear how a Beltrami Scream score will sound today!
