I sampled a friend's a few times to see what it was all about, but other than that, nope, never did

I wouldn't go near a cigarette again in a million years. But when I did smoke, it was great. Same with alcohol and certain foods.

No offense intended but to me personally, voluntarily inhaling smoke always seemed like one of the most incomprehensibly/bafflingly dumb/weird pastimes possible.

Yes, it is, but it also feels great.

I haven’t smoked anything, not ever, not once. I don’t see the appeal. Also, both my parents died young from lung cancer, as did my father-in-law, so, hard pass.

Never even thought about it for a second. I feel like its only very recently that it's become a thing almost nobody does anymore. I used to see it a lot 15 or so years ago but even out in the town now? Not at all.

Pretty much this. It seems to me a staggeringly expensive thing to do, with equally staggering health implications.

Yeah it's slowly becoming a thing of the past:

I was a smoker from 2005-2014 (ages 17-26).  I quit 4 months before my first kid was born and haven’t looked back.

I wasn’t sure if 9 years counted as a short period or a long period.

Juul is where it's at now!

That's a hard no from me. Good way to destroy myself (I have asthma).

Yeah, purchasing and listening to background music from films is much better!

That's COVID, mate.

Never smoked (well, I've tried it a few times -- without success), but I've used 'snus' since 2002 (which is a kind of underlip tobacco that is very popular in Norway and Sweden, first and foremost).

There was a 2-3 year period in the early 90’s that I was a social smoker, parties and such.

Luckily I came to my senses. It is a foul, disgusting habit.

Shortly after I quit, I got to the point where the smell made me sick. I can’t stand to be around people who smoke. One of the good things to come out of society the last 20 years or so are places banning smoking on the premises.

It's really nice to see how quickly we came to our senses  in the recent past. When my parents were born, in the 70s, everyone smoked, everywhere. I on the other hand don't think I even know anyone who does (either I don't know them well enough or they hide it well / don't do it often). One set of grandparents gave it up on their own, Mom told the other set when I was coming along to give it up or they're not going to meet their grandkid.

I know quite a few people (including Millennials my age and now even Gen Z) who smoke but never did myself, nobody in my family does and neither did my closest group of friends as a teenager, plus I was just well scared off by the side effects. Don't like how it makes others smell (or uh, taste if getting frisky) so was never my bag at all. I've smoked exactly one cigar and one joint, neither of which were for me either.

It looks badass, though, I mean come on! Like I hope it goes away for everyone's health as much as anyone but cool people holding cigarettes, lighting up after sex, singing about smoking, photographed in black and white, damn. I fall for the romance of it too.

I’ve never smoked.  My spouse smoked fairly heavily for a few years when she was working in social work, but went cold turkey about a decade ago after she ditched that line of work, without any real difficulty.

I find it interesting that there are no active smokers here (or at least not ones who want to answer this poll, I guess!).  Come to think of it, coincidentally I don’t think there’s anyone I spend any time with (beyond the level of acquaintancey coworker) who still smokes.

It just seems weird to me that people will still pick up a cigarette packet with a photo of a blackened lung taking up most of one side of it and think “Yeah; that’s for me”. Like, if it said on a food packet “This food will kill you or seriously harm you”, you wouldn’t touch it.

No, mom and dad did enough for me and sis. Image being stuck in the car driving through Maine, its 15 degrees below zero and you can't open the window.

It’s called addiction. And we eat plenty of foods that we know are bad for us for similar reasons. Sugar and caffeine are addictive.

Its not the same at all. Every person has to eat. Not every person gets to choose what food is out in front of them.

No one gets forced to smoke unless you say peer pressure is the overriding factor.

And those who smoke or vape during a potentially lung destroying pandemic make a bad choice on their own, addiction or not.

I do get that smoking is more addictive than alcohol, meth, heroin, oxy, but probably not sugar. But its much easier to control what you ingest non-food wise.

Obviously but it is just a different judgment call for a young non-smoker in 2021 deciding that they want cigarettes and subsequently getting addicted.

I'm baffled when I see young people taking up smoking now.

Vaping is all the rage now with the kids.

Unfortunately :(

It might surprise people to learn that, although I smoke cigarettes, I have never, ever, ingested anything stronger.

I was around several people at Uni. who did a regular J, but I wasn't tempted.

When I thought that I might try, I began to work on a mental health ward. I saw a man admitted for Drug Induced Psychosis after having one J. That put me off for life.

Smoked cigarettes for decades but quit full time several years ago. I still do it socially if I'm with people who smoke or if I'm on a trip to Florida, where they have smoking sections in Universal Studios. It's very enjoyable, especially when paired with booze. You also meet cool people in the smoking sections.

I smoked for 6 years, and now I regret it. It may not have been decades, but I feel like it has still harmed my health.
