Hellfighters (1968) -- abandoned John Williams project?

We were discussing Leonard Rosenman over on FSM, so I looked up a few old interviews with him, and in one of them Rosenman claims that John Williams was originally slated to do this Andrew V. McLaglen western from 1968, but that he had to decline because he suffered from appendicitis at the time. So Rosenman ended up doing it. I've never seen it, and I don't know if Rosenman's assertion is correct (he had many weird assertions in interviews, especially regarding his own work), but Williams and McLaglen previously collaborated on THE RARE BREED, so it wouldn't be totally unreasonable.

Anyone have any more info on this?

McLaglen also directed Mitchell (1975)… wow, maybe in some alternate universe Williams scores that instead of Jaws

Fast forward 40 years, Thor is the founder of JWFan and this time the name of the site is literal (no need for an "s").
