My favorite score of 2005 is certainly Giacchino's work on LOST seasons 1 and 2

Restricted to films only, probably Revenge of the Sith

Restricted to what you put on the poll, Memoirs of a Geisha

  6. Flightplan by James Horner
  7. The Island by Steve Jablonsky (just for the track "My Name is Lincoln" I guess)

And Memoirs is not? What you call "different" is in fact just a manipulative poll.

This list features the "Winner Scores" made by three well-known "Critics" organizations...

These polls are made to challenge their choices, which are sometimes a bit different than the usual "BIG" awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys...

And well, the goal is to speak about Film music :-)

Yep, 2000 to about 2006 was an excellent era for JNH fans. We had:

  • The three Disney scores (Dinosaur, Atlantis, Treasure Planet)
  • Unbreakable
  • Signs
  • The Emperor's Club
  • Peter Pan
  • Hidalgo
  • The Village
  • King Kong
  • Lady in the Water
  • Blood Diamond

From the ones listed I've got a crush in Howl's Moving Castle. Wonderful music and a larger than life main theme.

Haven't heard it. Any good?

Good question. Have you heard it?

Every single one of Joe Hisaishi's scores to Hayao Miyazaki's films are just terrific.  Howl's Moving Castle is no exception

I didn't know there's an animated version of Mortal Engines.

Geisha suffered for me from two issues. First, the two main themes reminded me of other Williams themes, (Chairman's Waltz shares that significant key change with abandoned in the woods from A.I. and Saruyi's Theme to a side theme from Seven Years in Tibet), secondly, even though Geisha played in Japan and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in China I found both scores comparable in their way of adaptation of traditional asian music elements in a european classical orchestra scores. And in that comparison for me Tan Dun's score wins (which really doesn't happen often with a Williams score in competition).

Anyway, Geisha grew in me with time an I like it much more now. The Cello suite helped there a lot.

Legend of Zorro being compared against Mask of Zorro has nothing to do with Legend of Zorro compared against the other scores of 2005

OK so 2005 was a pretty good year... I decided to be the only person (so far, at least) to vote for Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Man I love this score. Julian Nott is a national treasure and in any sane world he'd be scoring movies all over. However, I could happily vote for any of the others on the list, except Brokeback Mountain which is the guitar equivalent of Spock's harp playing in Star Trek V (before he learns to play Row, Row, Row Your Boat).

I'm not overly familiar with his career. What else than W&G and Peppa Pig has he done?

In fairness the only other scores I have by him are one of the 53492394 versions of A Christmas Carol, but it's a charming effort and a score to A Man of No Importance which, having thought about it, I don't remember, but will have to give another listen to. But his W&G scores are terrific. A shame there's not a nice 45 minute album of highlights from the shorts.

The music heard in this video at the designated timestamp (up until the 12:30 mark) is by Julian Nott, written, I think, as a sort of demo reel for his work or as stock music (it was not composed speficially for this particular video). I really wish I could find it somewhere, it's terrific stuff:

This is fantastic.

Has he done any concert work?

Currently discovering A history of violence, by Howard Shore.

Dark, strong, with a great orchestration, I sense it will be a grower!

Probably, it's because Viggo Mortensen plays in that movie. But it is Shore's Cronenberg Soundtrack that reminds me the most of Lord of the Rings. Especially, in the action parts.
