Doug's official blurb on the Intrada store page is worded a little confusingly.  It does read like Williams only wrote 7 minutes of source music and it is all included, but that's not the case.

 

Here is a transcript of exactly what Mike said about it on the podcast:

 

"And then there was the case of all the source music.  There were 7 pieces I believe, and we ended up I think with 3 of them, which is pretty good because usually John doesn't like them to go out.  On Earthquake, I stuck with the ones that had a counterpart on the original album.  With these, a lot of them had a character that was acceptable to put out in the place where we put them, which was following after the album"

 

and later

 

"With this one, all I could have hoped for was submitting all 7, and I think maybe by doing that, by submitting all 7, I got 3 back, and I'll take it."

 

He didn't say this on the podcast, but let me know it was OK to share that the Chopin piece was recorded by Williams at the sessions too, so that makes 8 pieces of source music overall, 1 Chopin and 7 Williams

 

7 of these 8 appear in the film (the Chopin, "Never Quaver", "Leave Me Alone", and 4 others), while 1 ("Dinner With Jem") does not.

 

It is nice to know that music that isn't on the new set is at least preserved digitally in as great condition as everything else, and that the 4 unreleased Williams originals are already mixed and mastered and ready to go.  Perhaps we'll get to hear them outside of the film one day in the future.

 

Note: "Hotel Bellevue" can also be considered source music I suppose, but since it uses the main theme of the score and doesn't really have a strong source music "feel", for me personally I think of it as more of a score cue than a source cue, especially considering its (brilliant!) placement in the main program.

Was that the nice version of the theme played on an accordion?  I had been racking my brains to figure out where in the score I had heard an accordion after I saw accordionists listed in the musicians’ roster.  Now I know why I couldn’t place it!

 

Fascinating podcast from Maurizio and the gang as per.  I really cannot wait for this to arrive in the post.

Yea!  Maurizio played it early in the podcast, not later when they spend some time talking about that cue.   My list above names each track  in the order he played them.

I really hope that everyting gets released as a rarities CD some day.

 

But i fear that they will be truly complete scores that will surface in around 10-15 years from now.

 

Who knows i may even be so old as not to worry if i have a piece of music or not... which wouldn't be a bad state of mind to achieve, really.

Just listened to the Legacy podcast, MM ponders how Williams came to score Eiger Sanction, JW’s working relationship with Eastwood, where/how the jazz elements of the score originated, etc.

 

Why doesn’t MM ask these questions to JW himself when preparing the album?  Is JW not up for interviews when approving these releases?  Listening to his old scores must bring back so many memories.  Would be great to get some insights/anecdotes from JW himself about these scores.

The impression I get is that MM rarely interacts with JW directly.

 

He meets with Jamie Richardson and gives him a proposed new album, and later after Jamie and JW have listened to it, Jamie tells MM whatever JW wanted to relay about what they heard, and he makes any requested changes to the master and that's that.

 

JW rarely goes "on the record" for anyone other than specific interviewers these days

 

Though after reading that note he wrote about his 2nd violin concerto, I wish he'd write a few paragraphs about his old scores for each new specialty label release...

I saw it was temporarily out of stock. Now I'm concerned. I ordered it Tuesday, the day it was available to order, between 10 and 11 AM EST. They flip the switch to make the website say "temporarily out of stock" when they've received enough orders to fulfill the amount they had received from the first pressing from the pressing plant.  They will not let people order more until the second batch has arrived.  That's all.
