Popular Post The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
https://filmmusicreporter.com/2021/09/22/ludwig-goransson-scoring-disneys-the-book-of-boba-fett/ Film Music Reporter publicly confirms the long-held assumption that Ludwig Göransson will indeed be scoring The Book of Boba Fett, joined by his longtime assistant composer Joseph Shirley. Recording began in August, and apparently there are not any restrictions similar to Mando S2, where the brass were only able to record for the finale cues. So that's good news! There's not a lot we know about the show, as Lucasfilm has done well to keep a tight lid on these Disney+ projects, but I think it's safe to assume that there will be a lot of new ground covered thematically. Here's a reminder of Boba's lumbering motif, which will hopefully develop or become a part of something stronger if it's going to (presumably) carry the show: Can't wait to hear the end credits piece for this one! We can only hope the fact that this is technically a new series will mean they might bless us with weekly OSTs again, but I wouldn't set any expectations. Really looking forward! crocodile, Holko, Raiders of the SoundtrArk and 3 others 3 1

Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
I was puzzled by the sample, but hearing the full track won me over. It's certainly out of left field, but I like it a lot! Goransson proving once again he's the right person because of the boldness of his musical voice and choices. The vocalizing reminds me somewhat of some of the Maori chanting rituals I've seen, I wonder if he arrived at that as an inspiration through Morrison? ragoz350, Holko, Docteur Qui and 2 others 4

The Māori-esque voices in the first half are I suppose a nod to Temuera Morrison's own Māori heritage? It also kinda reminds me of a sea shanty. And wow yea the second half starts off sounding exactly like the Secrets Theme from Powell's Solo score! Weird. What did that theme represent in that movie? Wasn't it mostly when Qi'ra was around? Is she gonna be in this show? Did they pretend she's in that Marvel show to secretly film her for this instead? WampaRat

Popular Post Thor 7,493
I immediately thought of old Norse/Nordic folk songs rather than New Zealand in that cue. For example, the way it's used in Astrid Lindgren's RONJA RÖVERDOTTER (RONJA, THE ROBBER'S DAUGHTER) by composer Björn Isfält. It would make sense since Göransson is Swedish, and the vibe of medieval robbers and outlaws in the Lindgren universe matches somewhat with the spaghetti western/outlaw vibe of Boba Fett. So a cross between Morricone and Norse, I'd say. As for Göransson, my low opinion of him should be wellknown around these parts. While I do enjoy this particualr theme, I'm still worried about the score as a whole, but I think I'll be able to enjoy the series regardless, just as I did MANDO. GerateWohl 4,356
When I hear that chant I imagine 3 drunken aliens stumbling out of the Mos Eisley cantina singing this staggering down the street. Without judgement, when I hear Göranson's music it is less like listening to the work of an educated musician but to the output of a kid in the sandbox of musical tools. Popular Post The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
Joseph Shirley has been working with Goransson for a long time now, so it makes absolute sense that he's been given this opportunity. In fact, he's credited with several excellent Mando cues, including Nurse and Protect, Trashed Crest, and Mando Says Goodbye from Season 1, as well as co-credits on most of the album tracks from Season 2. The news certainly still comes as a surprise to me and I hope it doesn't end up being a mental block for the way I approach the score and show, but I like what I've heard thus far even if my excitement level is more contained than usual. The new themes are good and well-integrated into the score, and there are certainly a couple of cues that I'd like to have a closer listen to. In general, I'm mostly looking forward to seeing where it all goes in the next few episodes. Here's what I heard in this chapter... Prologue - A fairly long cue for the opening set of flashbacks. Lots of atmospheric rumbling and low strings, a slew of eclectic sounds, and several references to the Goransson's themes, both new and old. The vocalic textures are strong and there's some neat instrumentation, including particularly triumphant horns as Boba emerges from the sand, as well as a combination of guitar and tambourine for an encounter with Tusken Raiders. I honestly got a lot of Dune vibes from the opening, both in the show and the score. The almost pirate-y string theme that opens Ludwig's credits suite plays over the title card. Escape Attempt - Largely atmospheric opening as Boba Fett finds himself a prisoner of a group of Tusken Raiders. Things pick up as he attempts to escape, although the cue is limited to electronics and percussion for the most part. Suiting Up / Pay Tribute - Particularly bombastic horns as Boba dawns his armor, with low-key pizzicato, light strings, and percussion underscoring the offerings of the many visitors to the throne room. Fun cue! Loyal to Me - Boba recruits the Gamorrean guards and his theme from Mando S2 begins to play, with the closing statement from the Chapter 16 post-credits scene being repurposed for a wide-shot of a Tatooine city. The S2 theme continues underneath some brief dialogue. @Holko has wondered whether the S2 theme will be used for events in the present timeline, with the new themes Ludwig has written for this show being applied more so to the flashback timeline. We shall see! Cantina Latina - Robert Rodriguez's version of John Williams' Cantina Band source. Good to hear Max Rebo's organ in there! Tatooine Parkour - The first real action cue. Largely percussion and electronics with the S2 theme present, although the tempo picks up as the Gamorrean guards intervene and the fighters disperse. Prisoner - Quiet pizzicato and bits of the S2 theme, with the new pirate-y theme receiving an almost medieval-sounding variation. Some of the new vocals also make an appearance. Digging for Water - The pirate-y theme appears again, on what sounds almost like a mandolin or a strange guitar. It would seem that a lot of these new sounds seem are influenced by showrunner Robert Rodriguez's own tastes as well as Temeura Morrison's Maori heritage. Interesting! Monster Attack - Some of the new themes are present in passing here but it's mostly loud monster music. Return to Camp - The new themes are particularly upbeat and happy here, transitioning directly into Ludwig's end credits piece. enderdrag64, blondheim, Falstaft and 1 other

No, Powell is not credited because Powell is not quoted anywhere. Whatever similarity that part of the credits may have to the Secrets theme seems to be purely coincidental at this point. I think this is a lot more like when some folks said they heard a bit of Jedi Steps in A Friend. I know what's being referred to and it could very well be right, but I'm not hearing it. All of these new ideas are blending together in my head, so while I may be misremembering I seem to recall this particular melody appearing in the prologue. In any case, barring some change in how they are applied throughout the show, I'm assuming all of the themes in Ludwig's piece are synonymous with Boba Fett's character and the cool things he does. tee_oh
Jay 37,346
Yea, I suppose it's not EXACTLY the same as the Secrets theme, and the fact that Powell isn't credited confirms its meant to be a separate thing. Jay 37,346
Watched the episode last night and really liked the music! The new main theme is really catchy, and worked quite well in in the underscore through the "flashback" parts - I liked it more in all those cues than in the end credits arrangement actually. I thought it was interesting that in the 15 minute "interlude" of the "present day", he was scored by that bouncy theme he had from Season 2 of Mando instead, which I suppose is intentional. It worked for me! I didn't notice the Powell Secrets motif being used, but of course I don't always notice everything the first time I watch something when I am primarily enjoying the show itself artus_grayboot

artus_grayboot 77
Boba Fett's motif is what you hear for the first 20 seconds or so. I can see how some of that repeated note thing as an idea has stuck around for his theme in Book of Boba Fett. Maybe I'm crazy - they're certainly not note for note in comparison, but there's something here maybe. The Bespin Dirge 1 motif as coined by music theorist Frank Lehman is connected to the Boba Fett theme, and the oscillating notes to me sound a lot like the material for the Book of Boba Fett show! Pretty cool stuff I see some people in this thread are making comparisons to the secrets motif in Solo for one section of music. It's perhaps a coincidence, but given that Ludwig Göransson used Kevin Kiner's Ahsoka theme in Mando, I would think it's not completely out of the question for him to know about this. In addition, since the Boba Fett show deals with the crime underworld like Solo, this might be an interesting/underlying thematic connection between the two.
