The Great Koichi Sugiyama Has Passed Away At Age 90

The grandfather of orchestral game music died on September 30th.

 

Composer of the Dragon Quest series, Godzilla vs. Biollante, and much more was a legend in both the video game industry and music industry.

My introduction to his music was playing Dragon Quest V on the DS way back in 2009.  This was when I was figuring that I really didn't care for JRPGs, but I totally fell in love with Sugiyama's score for the game.  Just classic, classic game music right there.

Pretty impressive that he scored every game all the way up to 11

 

It'll be interesting to see who scores 12.  I haven't played or heard 11, but I did hear discussion on podcasts that felt his music had gotten stale by then
