What’s Your Favorite David Arnold Bond set piece cue

Hovercraft Chase from Die Another Day deserves a mention.  At this point I find the overdubs on that score kinda part of the daft fun of it all.

Yeah I’ve recently listened to that expansion. It’s pretty great. The movie was waaay over the top. So the score had to follow suit. So we get some epic Independence Day choirs in that one that just put a big dumb grin on my face. And I don’t mind the drum loops. It’s a pretty natural progression from Tomorrow Never Dies, to The World Is Not Enough, and then he takes it all to 11 with Die Another Day!

Oof, too hard, I love all of them, but let's try, one per movie, I think:

Backseat Driver (with film insert)

Caviar Factory

Ice Palace Car Chase

African Rundown

Pursuit at Port au Prince

I’ve got Bond on the brain of late (looking forward to seeing NTTD tomorrow:) Ive been going back and listening to all the David Arnold scores. Man. What an immense talent. Overall, he captured the perfect synthesis of the classic and modern take on Bond.

Arnold wrote some flat-out whoppers when it came to action set pieces for these films.

“White Knight”
from Tomorrow Never Dies

“Miami International”

from Casino Royal

and my personal favorite
”Come in 007 Your Time is Up”

There are a TON more.

But what would you say is your all time favorite Bond action set piece by Arnold?

I'm on the Bond craze too and damn NTTD is boring, I like it, but I have no idea how another Zimmer dun-dun style action score is compared to the likes of Arnold. I wish they had him on all five Craig movies, despite all this stuff with director choices and etc

TND has the best ones, I love “White Knight” and the Bond theme as used in “Bike Chase” but my favorite is

“All In A Day’s Work”, which has a great rendition of Surrender, really a perfect ending.

My favourite is HELICOPTER RIDE. I love the ethnic instruments, coupled with the powerful percussion, culminating in that very "Play Dead"-esque coda.

Helicopter Ride from Tomorrow Never Does was the cue that always stood out to me as a kid when I watched that movie. Love that bit.

“White Knight” is so so good. A brilliant display of Arnold’s great militaristic action music and it builds to a fantastic climax.

It’s topped only by “Miami International”, which is one of my favourite action cues of all time. The way it builds in intensity over such a long time without ever getting repetitive is masterful. It also barely uses the Bond theme (as with the rest of the score for Casino), a very welcome move as I felt he relied on it too much in TWINE and DAD.

Honourable mention goes to “Submarine” which features some exquisitely orchestrated brass passages and very satisfying complexity.

Among my favourites, is the cue in QOS, which begins as Bond returns to where Mr. White escaped from, and then cuts to a shot of a rain-soaked road, with the word "London" superimposed.

Ah. I think I know the part you refer to (about 2:55ish) in “Time to Get Out. The cool beat that starts and then the suave flute begins growing into a hip statement of the “No Good About Goodbye” melody. And that dulcimer(?) plays the Bond guitar riff. Very classy bit. I always dug that moment as well.

Really felt like Arnold was reinventing his Bond sound in QOS.

Such a shame his journey ended there, had lots of potential to go interesting new places.

I can divide all of the other Arnolds into parts. The Bike Chase. White Knight. Pipeline. Etc.

But Quantum just IS. ALL of it. My favorite part of Quantum of Solace is Quantum of Solace.

You must choose!

Noooooo! Set pieces? Either Bike Chase or Come in 007, Your Number's Up. Has nobody said Backseat Driver? To be fair BSD works WAY better on the album than it did in the film. It's a great scene in the film, but it isn't tied to the music the way White Knight is.

I can't in good conscience answer White Knight because that would mean he blew it all right away, and I don't feel he did.

I'll say Bike Chase. It's the best combination of what's going on on screen and in the music. It was definitely the best part of getting the expanded TND.

I still love the way Arnold brought back the opening to From Russia With Love for Bond's entrance. To the point where they even used it in the trailers for The World is Not Enough.

My submission for best unused Bond score ;) haha. Totally derailing my own thread. But I’ll be darned if this score isn’t a blast. I have a sneaking suspicion Nicholas Dodd had a lot of influence in this one…

Clint Mansell is a wonderful composer who is more than capable of this. I hope you aren't implying otherwise ;)

I wish he would work in this style more often. He really is an under-rated composer

Haha. Just re-opening an almost 20(!) year old conspiracy theory ;) I agree it would be awesome to hear him compose something like this again. I’m sure the films troubled production didn’t wet his appetite to score more summer blockbuster schlock.

Just listened to Sahara. I would totally have guessed that was just straight up Arnold. Or barring that maybe Giacchino.

It was a lot of fun though.

Glad you dug it!
It had been a while since I gave it a listen too. Yeah it’s a romp.

Should I bother with the film?

I enjoyed it. But I’m a sucker for the genre (and the score was so fun).

But I can’t say it’s a very good film. It’s probably in the realm of a decent “National Treasure” or “Tomb Raider” film.
