Popular Post Holko 9,499
Disc 1 Tradition is very bright. The rest of it, and Disc 2 too, thankfully sound fantastic, better than I hoped! Nothing like one of the earlier releases I skipped into that felt like the vocals were at 80% volume and the orchestra was at 20%, this here is a very healthy mix! Entr'acte is incredible to hear so clear, the film mix on the blu transfer is awful, phasing all over, noisy, near unlistenable. Even Disc 3 sounds better than expected, for a film stem source with supposed minor sound effects! Popular Post JohnnyD 1,220
Apart from having watched the film via the 40th anniversary Blu-Ray, I never owned the soundtrack to Fiddler On the Roof, as much as I love the film and the Maestro's work. I've always wanted to hear the entire score in addition to the film versions of the musical numbers. I've listened to some tracks from the 30th anniversary CD via Apple, but it left much to be desired. I've always stuck to the 40th anniversary Blu-Ray because it is the best presentation of the film (great remastered picture AND sound). However, I only just listened to the sample of Entr'acte, as I want to be surprised by the remastered sound for the entire score; the moment it started, I was blown away; this sounds miles better than the 30th anniversary CD. I am amazed at the clarity and dynamic punch of the orchestra presented just from the sample of Entr'acte. I cannot wait to hear the rest of the Maestro's phenomenal masterpiece of an adaptation from beginning to end. Also, my favorite musical number has always been If I Were a Rich Man. I cannot wait to hear how remastered that sounds. Once, crumbs, mahler3 and 1 other 3

Jay 37,281
Thanks Tim! The Fiddler content is in Part 2 starting at 18:57! Mike starts talking at 21:58! After the "thank you Tim", sounds like we're hearing a cut from tomorrow's podcast, as I can hear Tim and Maurizio reacting to some of the things Mike says here After "Miracle of Miracles", "First Act Finale" then "Entr'acte" are played And the Fiddler content is over by 29:16! Wonderful choices here, lengthy previews of Williams' score sounding better than ever, and nice coverage of how Miracle of Miracles is different from the original Playback to the OST to the final film. Nice tease for tomorrow's podcast!

Popular Post Jay 37,281
I really enjoyed the discussion of the film itself, like the part about how the shocking end of act 1 finale in the summer sets a tone, and then the entr'acte and cornfield cues combined with the visuals showing the harvest in the fall covers how life goes on no matter what... and how universal that feeling is. And of course the whole podcast production was amazing. Well done Maurizio on the editing in of the music throughout (and wow on the cross between two of the films mentioned in the discussion). Really, La-La Land should ship a 6 disc edition with CDs 4-6 being the commentary podcasts! (I am guessing the hoped for follow up Fiddler conversation might be another 90 mins!) These chats feel like they take the amazing expanded releases up to Criterion level! If I had one disappointment, it's just that the new CDs are not in my hands yet, and I don't dare listen to the 30th anniversary knowing JW did not approve of it. Popular Post JohnnyD 1,220
The Maestro, Mike Matessino, La-La Land Records and all else involved have outdone themselves yet again. I am blown away by how remastered the music is. It is so great to finally have the film versions of the musical pieces. All sound phenomenal. Even Disc 3, despite tracks being sourced from the final film mix due to the original scoring tapes being lost to time, sound great. It is also great to finally have most of the Maestro's underscore (the only cue that unfortunately was not included, most likely due to extensive sound effects that could not be removed, is the scene in the Russian court yard in Kiev where Perchik and his rally are attacked by the Russian police on horses). The essay by Mike Matessino is also well-written (as always) and very insightful. "Tradition!"
