Very excited for this. Sounds like we’re getting a considerable amount of extra music. Always thought there was only 10 or so minutes unreleased.

Even if that were true (and I think it isn't)... that's like half the length of what's currently available from the score. So as with Goldsmith's Damnation Alley or SPYS, adding 10 minutes is adding a third of the score, and probably very significant in terms of architecture and development!

INTRADA Announces:

ANOTHER 48 HRS.
Composed and Conducted by JAMES HORNER
INTRADA ISC 471

Intrada kicks off 2022 with an expanded release of James Horner's score to the 1990 Paramount film Another 48 HRS. Thematically and stylistically it relies on the score to the original, with added twists and turns to fit the new story. A new color is added into the mix – the shakuhachi, to characterize the bikers who see themselves as a romanticized, modern-day version of feudal Japanese rōnin. Unlike the previous film, the sequel required substantially more music. Even so, there was a considerable amount of music dropped or dialed out of the finished film.

The score was originally featured on a release from Scotti Bros, featuring 20 minutes of score plus vocals. For this release, Intrada used Shawn Murphy's film mixes to create the expanded program in film order as James Horner originally intended, bringing the program to 47 minutes. The program also includes seven minutes of several alternates and as is customary at Intrada, placed in "The Extras" after the main program.

In this new outing, Reggie (Eddie Murphy) is a free man and it is Jack (Nick Nolte) who is threatened with incarceration. Jack has been on a reckless crusade to expose a nebulous drug lord known as the Iceman and must find hard evidence within 48 hours or lose his badge. Reggie can ID the Iceman, who was the source of the money he stole years ago. Reggie is resentful but has plans for the cash, tied to a man he befriended in prison, so he plays along. But Jack’s police allies are stretched thin and a mysterious man has hired a group of outlaw bikers to take down Reggie and Jack in an orgy of violence.

Premiere release of complete score for hit action sequel! Spectacular box office success of first 48 Hrs. picture and launch of Eddie Murphy into super-stardom virtually guaranteed Another 48 Hrs. Second go-round for dynamite duo of grizzled cop Nick Nolte pairing with ex-con Eddie Murphy shoves comic episodes in back seat, places emphasis on drama and action with darker-edged tale that uses plot elements of first movie as stepping stones to anchor new (albeit similar) violent crime thriller.

Walter Hill is back to direct, Paramount Pictures again presents. James Horner also returns as well, using motifs from his first score as a foundation to this more substantial work. This one is bigger, longer, more action-driven. Heavy editing of the score with much truncating of cues and dropping of several pieces altogether result in much more music being recorded than was ultimately used in the finished picture. Just four cues appeared on the original 1990 Scottish Bros. album, reducing weight of things still further. Intrada is happy to present all of the music Horner scored for this sequel, presenting the music in a sequence as close to his original intentions as could be done while retaining the musicality of his exciting score.

The entire CD has been mastered from the two-track stereo mixes made by Shawn Murphy at the scoring sessions. Following the initial score presentation are a handful of additional alternate sequences that were dropped from the film as well. As with the first movie, Horner scored much of the trombone and tuba writing to play in unison, utilizing octaves without harmony. Resulting timbre is stark, powerful, dramatic. Aggressive rhythms, vivid orchestrations, striking shakuhachi are additional assets. Dynamic recording yet another plus! Orchestrations by Greig McRitchie. James Horner composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection CD available while quantities and interest remain!

My copy arrived in Saturday's mail, and has the "1982" copyright date on the back instead of the "1990" date shown on the back cover image on Intrada's website (and above).   I figured only the initial print run would have the "1982" mistake and later print runs would use the "1990" file.  But maybe they are still on the first print run?

Regardless, I can't wait to listen to this; I still have to see the movie at some point too!

Does anyone on JWFan have any thoughts on this release? I haven't found the time to open mine yet.

It's definitly a great release. I really love it, being listening to it a dozen of times now and it's always a great pleasure.

Plus listening back to back with 48 HRS. is a really nice experience
