Michael Giacchino's Lightyear

Sweet! That seems right up his alley. There better be a sly Star Trek reference or it will be entirely in vain. Lol.

Really looking forward to this, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Jurassic World 3!

Batman, Thor: Love and Thunder, Jurassic World: Dominion, Lightyear... this will be a big year for Gia fans.

It's only late January, we already have two tentpole films that Giacchino has already completed, and two other tentpole films that either he's currently working on or he's about to finish. With the last of the four coming on July 8th, gods know what projects await for MG in second half of the year.

The right man for the job, but I'm still interested to see how they get a story with heart out of the delusional backstory of the original character. However, I have faith in the writers / Disney's cash-cow milking abilities.

The single is already up on YouTube

I think the melody repeated throughout it's going to be the main theme. I quite like it so far. Really sounds like some other Giacchino's work for Pixar movies (and even maybe some Tomorrowland), in that it has the sense of wonderment and adventure, but with a hint of melancholy.

Quote

Giacchino who also scored “The Batman” and the upcoming “Jurassic World:Dominion” recorded the soundtrack with an 89-piece orchestra and 39-member choir over 5 days.

Five days? So I guess COVID wasn't much of a problem this time than with Spider-Man, The Batman and JW3.

With Pixar seemingly diversifying in their composer choices in recent years, I would have hoped to see someone other than Giacchino score this to chalk off yet another entry in his franchise quota for one year.

I don't expect them to 'do a Star Wars' and hire any old unproven fledgling but surely no seasoned composer would turn down a Pixar film.

I read and heard some early reactions to the film.

2 of those mentioned that every member of the orchestra was credited, by instrument secti9n, in the end credits. This doesn't happen a lot, right?

IIRC the last Pixar production, Turning Red, also has every soloist credited in the end roll

Yeah, soloists is more common.

I'm really talking about all the members of the orchestra

Checked again

Turning Red has in fact credited every musician that has performed for the movie, score and song alike, including every instrumentalist and every member in the choir

Well, consider myself surprised!

I proclaim myself a "Giacchino hater" 😅,

mainly because of his themes.

There is something awkward and amateurish about the quality of his themes;

like the jarring shift of tones, etc. (I don't mind the simplicity though), especially post-2009 movies.

His Lightyear theme is no exception (compared to Newman's, as if Giacchino didn't bother to try)

But after hearing the samples above,

color me very intrigued! The action cues sound great.

It's more "classical music-inspired" than usual. I also like the action motif and the orchestration, they have a  "Jupiter Ascending-quality"

I look forward to hearing this in full this Friday

Ha, I liked when the interviewer was all "I heard all these callbacks to Randy Newman's themes" and Gia was immediately like "we didn't do any callbacks to themes". :D

Hah, yeah, that's what happens when the interviewer tries to be both flattering to the composer and crowd-pleasing to viewers without asking first whether the composer actually did those things.

I've listened to the samples on the Disney website. This sound amazing!

I don't care that a lot of people seem to hate/not like Giacchino, I'm a big fan of his.

I really like the new Buzz theme and Zurg's theme sounds great too.

The choir is a nice addition, especially in the end credits cue.

Can't wait to hear it in full.
