Funny, this week I was thinking of a few titles such as The Last Emperor and The Sheltering Sky, if only for the cinematography of Vittorio Storaro. And while 4K versions are in the works, nothing concrete has been announced yet. And believe it or not, I also tried to find The Others to see if there was maybe a restored version in 4K, but alas ...

Obviously all Spielberg movies should get the 4K treatment (top of the list Duel, AI and Tintin in Open Matte)

As a big fan of Deakins work I would also say what's left (especially Hail Ceaser!)

Otherwise:

  • Aliens, Alien3 and Resurrection
  • The Towering Inferno
  • How to Steel a Million
  • Fincher's Seven, Fight Club and Panic Room (preferably in both Open Matte and theatrical ratio)
  • The Hateful Eight
  • Django Unchained

The Abyss was supposedly waiting Cameron’s approval since more than 2 yrs…

This movie could look great but never had even a blu-ray release…

There are many Super 35 films I would love to see in 1:78.

But, the OAR Fanatics would scream bloody hell.

They are worse, much worse, than the C and C Crazies.😵

You could always get a copy of Taxi Driver on eBay. That Columbia box set just houses them all together, but they still come in their own separate packaging.

I neither have the equipment to play them properly, nor the money or desire to expand my physical movie collection very much at this point.

But I've been patiently waiting for a 4K restoration of THE ABYSS for years. A couple of years ago, there were some murmurs that they were working on it, but they're waiting for Cameron to find a gap in his AVATAR projects to properly oversee it.

I would not go there myself but his 75 to 84 outshines any other period including every living or dead film composer

1941 made you nervous? How, Alex?

It's been many decades ago but wasn't it just a loud and nervous movie? A Spielberg in excess mode, resulting in an 'energetic', chaotic and not so funny movie? I do remember that the critics didn't like it so I know I wasn't the only one.

European critics were kinder to 1941, than their American counterparts. Curiously, it was liked, in Japan.

It is a big, loud, brash, in-yer-face movie, and it goes against the kind of film I normally like, but I can't help myself: I love it :)

1941 is an impressive production. It has great fx,stunts and cast.

Just one problem: it's not funny . Thats a pretty big drawback for a COMEDY!😅

Are folks really not satisfied with 1080?

Will 4k make such a difference?

If I would have to name Spielbergs 3 funniest movies, I would name

1. Last Crusade

2. Catch Me if You Can

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark

1941 is not one of them.

And none of these 3 is a comedy, but they are the most humerous to me.

Not sure 1941 would benefit from a 4K restoration. It might make it TOO clear, as the whole idea of the photography in the film is to put it in that hazy 40s look.

The same applied to the sound. The 5.1 mix ruined it.

But it is funny, from a certain point of view.

Least Crusade is the most groan inducing.

X marks the spot groan,

The umbrella bird scene groan,

Any point with Sallah and Marcus, super groan.

To you perhaps.

I admit that the film is less than the sum of its parts. But scene by scene set piece by set piece there is some amazing stuff.

But John Williams score is never short of amazing. It easily surpasses many of the so-called great scores he's done in the 21st century.

I agree that the score is fun. Even though I’m not a fan of the cannonball sound effect in the March, but thankfully there are alternate versions for us with that opinion.

And the movie isn’t bad, it holds ones interest from start to finish. It’s just off in it’s tonality. But I can also chalk it up to being a special kind of humor - some people will “get it”, the rest not.
