I realize recently how much great score have a special anniverary this year and came up with two lists one with scores that doesn't have an expansion/release yet but definitely deserve one and the other with OOP scores that should always stay in print for newcomers.

So what would be your favourite ones? Feel free to add your ideas that I might have missed.

Although the original songtrack of BATMAN & ROBIN had one Goldenthal track, I'd count a release of that as a premiere score-only release, not an expansion. But it's the only one on your list that I'd want. To be more precise, the original 50-minute programme that Goldenthal prepared at the time, as we just talked about in the other thread recently. [Added: Well...just noticed you had THE SCREAMING WOMAN on there, so obviously that too, even if it only has one Williams cue and the rest is existing music (this would also be a premiere release, not an expansion).]

Thanks for including a "I don't care about any of them" option, though, which made it possible for me to vote. I obviously care about most, if not all of the scores mentioned in a purely musical sense, but am pleased with the OSTs the way they are.

That was actually Forever recording, not B&R

you mean the track was culled from FOREVER?

Yes.

Not a drop of B&R's score had been commercially released.

At this point, I don't think The Screaming Woman shoud count as a Williams score. It's just a very short cue. Nothing else.

True. But a soundtrack would still be cool. Not a chance, though. Soundtracks of existing music/library music aren't usually released. Would be better off included on some form of combo release or compilation.

I'd kill for a C&C 35th anniversary THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK.

While we're at it, throw in a bonus Blu of the 5.1 score.

Right.

All those additional 15-30 second cues would really " allow the score to breathe".

Aladdin (1992), score by Alan Menken, is also having its 30th anniversary this year! I know there's a bunch of us who are hoping this gets inaugurated in the Legacy Collection line :)

Here's one of the best cues of the score, Cave of Wonders with french horn and trumpet by Marc Papeghin. I remember reading Menken's notes about writing this cue and he described is like trying to score a roller coaster ride. You'll definitely see what he meant by that as the cave starts collapsing.

Disney Music Emporium does have a feedback link available if anyone feels inclined to voice their request ;)

Personnally I love as much Amistad and Seven Years in Tibet but apperently Amistad has far more unreleased materials than SYiT making its expansion more interresting to my eyes

Think I put Batman & Robin... what a terrible JW fan I am. But, between those, it's a tough call. I've never really been massively excited by Amistad; Dry Your Tears, Afrika always felt a bit foursquare to me and not a patch on, say, Hans Zimmer's incorporation of African choral music (I'm sure both are equally inauthentic, but to me, Zimmer's sounds more authentic). I'm sure that's a double strike against me as a JW fan! Plus, the courtroom/dialogue scoring isn't especially interesting on disc but conversely is almost too much in the film, an feels like it's slathered in music rather than a gentle counterpoint. On the other hand, I can't say I'm desperate for more of Seven Years in Tibet, but as I've noted elsewhere, I think the sound could be somewhat improved from the fairly muddy mix on the soundtrack.

By the way. I mentioned it before, but when we put Geisha in the pot with these two, I see a big musical relation between these three. Sayuri's Theme has (at least for me) big similarities with Cinque's Theme

and this theme from Seven years in Tibet:

Yes, it is not exactly the same. But it explained to me, why Saruyi's theme sounded so familiar to me instantly.

Sorry. Off topic again.

  • 9 months later...

This was a fun thread to stumble upon

So far only Aladdin and Patriot Games have been done this year, but who knows what the final LLL, Varese, and Quartet batches will contain.

I hadn't even realized this was an anniversary year for LA Confidential!

Dr. No currently has no edition with much of the actual underscore from the film, which has only seen like rerecordings of a few tracks.

The Thing only has like the re-recording for the Carpenter tracks, so presumably the original recordings might be something new (or even just the re-recorded album being released digitally).

I think I was thinking of Casino Royale that's had a bunch of releases.

And i remember now that this edition of The Thing was a re recording

Even CR has like an odd cue here and there missing, but it would mainly be worth it for having a physical copy of the iTunes edition (though mitigated by some territories having it available to buy in lossless).

Didn't realize there was a separate re-recording for The Thing cues prior to the one Carpenter did himself in 2020.

Heyyyyyy... Waitaminute! Has anyone noticed that 2022 is the 35th anniversary of Star Wars? I mean, I bet that's a little flick that's flown under most people's RADAR.

EDIT: 45th. Same age as The Incredible Hulk (TV) and Close Encounters. Yes, yes.

45th! A few people have suggested it, but I don't think it's happening any time soon: Disney are the only record label that would release it. It would be a very high profile release, for what is probably the most famous and iconic film score ever - and we've heard nothing from them about it.

They brought their major music releases (the expanded 'Aladdin' etc.) to D23 - which would have been a perfect platform to release a Star Wars score expansion. I think we may have to wait a little while before we get a Star Wars expansion. The unfortunate reality is that, the longer they wait, the more likely it is that Disney will just save any release for the (50th anniversary).

Based on what Disney has released so far (the 2018 remasters of Ep. 1-6), I would expect that if they decided to expand Star Wars they'd also do Empire and Jedi at the same time - but that's just pure guesswork. Maybe even the prequels, but probably not the Sequels (too soon, plus it's cost prohibitive due to re-use fees).

There will be a MASSIVE marketing push behind it, since there is definitely a market for it, and a lot of money to be made. It's a just a matter of time until they release it, but it's a painful waiting game.

All that being said... I would purchase any Star Wars expansion in a heartbeat. I just think it's unlikely for now, since we've had zero hints about it. Mike M. has effectively said that there hasn't been any expression of interest to expand Star Wars just yet, but let's just HOPE that Disney asks him to oversee it - OR better yet, Williams personally requests MM's involvement.

Hook is more likely - Mike M. has already reassembled the OST for a vinyl release. If I was a betting person, I'd put my money on Hook being a 3-CD release for Black Friday. JFK is also a possibility - someone from LLL or another label teased it around 5 years ago, but it's been *crickets* from them ever since. Perhaps Catch Me if You Can ? Just guessing.

LLL has already specifically said Hook is not coming for Black Friday this year.

Given their history together, I'd very much hope that happens. Even the Mouse doesn't ignore Williams.

Although my vibe is that Williams just doesn't want them expanded - he created his listening experience. What other sensible reason would there be? At least for the prequels there can't be any elements issues, fees or other legal crap.

Since 2012 Disney have owned Star Wars, which has probably complicated the process of releasing an expansion. I believe they have had the rights to the scores since 2017/18. Before this, Sony Music already had a fairly decent expansion of the original trilogy (from 1997, re-released in 2004 and again in 2016). Releasing a Star Wars expansion will be costly and time consuming given the volume of intellectual property relating to the film (all of the art, photography, etc). I expect that Star Wars would be a much more expensive series to produce expanded releases for than a "lower profile" JW film. Plus, a lot of people would probably need to approve the release - Williams, Disney/Lucasfilm, etc. When they finally do it, it will be a massive undertaking.

Agreed, there shouldn't be any issues, especially since they transferred everything again in 2018 in high res. The files are all ready to work with.

... which is why I'm not a betting person. Didn't realise this, but at least this means we can still speculate about what the Williams release will be! Maybe JFK or Catch Me If You Can?
