If it were me I'd take the gamble.  Pretty much no releases, even the big ones, sell through that quickly anymore.  My calculus is probably different though since I can easily order through a 3rd party seller like Screen Archives and I'm guessing that's not as simple a switch for you living on the planet's underbelly

Meanwhile I digged into some of the Star Trek movie scores, and even though I will never become a fan of that main title march (Goldsmith is almost good at everything except at doing the Williams) there are great scores in that series. But I see the Goldsmith scores above all the others, that I listened to. I can't do anything with Horners scores or McCarthy's Generations. For me it is just Goldsmith here.

That is. Shame. I hold Star track the motion picture above all other Goldsmith scores. However warners scores for wrath of Khan and search for Spock are amazing in their own right they're exciting emotional gut-wrenching everything that Goldsmith scores are.

All of the Star Trek movie scores have merit, even Trek IV.

 

TMP unquestionably raised the bar to an "epic" level sound with the full orchestra and his special magic.

 

And Horner did great with his duology.

 

Rosenman's score is, well, Rosenman, but there is some lovely complexity in the whale fugue, and dammit, Jim I just love the Main Title.

 

Eidelman's VI gets a lot of love, and with good reason.  It may not be wholly original, but it is a solid listen.

 

I like Generations.  McCarthy still has TV scoring sensibilities, but I'm a sucker for his noble melodies.

 

Jerry's return for V, and the TNG movies never felt as grand, and the performances were somehow thinner, cheaper sounding.  But there's good fun to be found, even in Nemesis.

 

As for the rest of the Trek I personally listen to...

 

Dated as they are, the TOS scores are pretty damn amazing in their own spectrum of dramatic scoring.  It may be hard for listeners to separate them from the colorful sets and 60s TV aesthetic, but that 15CD box gets a lot of play from me.  There are wonders in there.  Any one of those composers would have done fine work on a Trek Movie if given the opportunity, as even Steiner proved with his TMP contributions.

 

We think of the TOS scores as "old" compared to TMP, but they were only about 12 years old when Jerry scored TMP.  Giacchino's 2009 score is just as "old" today.

If you don't dig the MAIN THEME it's hard to get into the scores.

Which is why I like Horner better than JG;

V and VI better than TMP.

It is interesting ...  I'm not a music scholar, but if you deconstruct Horner's Main Theme, it is structurally a reworking of the phrases of Goldsmith's theme, with the notes and time signature shifted.  Probably common knowledge and surprising to nobody.

 

And furthermore, if you deconstruct Goldsmith's theme (revised after Robert Wise didn't like his first theme), it is remarkable similar in structure to Williams' Star Wars Main Title.  Again, I'm not a music scholar, but you could probably play them at the same tempo in counterpoint with each other and they'd line up.

Jerry Goldsmith’s iconic original score to Paramount Pictures’ 1979 feature film STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE boldly returns with a limited edition 2-CD re-issue from La-La Land Records and Paramount MNusic.

 

The first big screen voyage of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock was a high budget and ambitious undertaking that introduced Goldsmith’s famous and enduring Star Trek march (later used as the main theme for Star Trek: The Next Generation) as the cornerstone of an epic science fiction musical odyssey. Like the film’s refit starship Enterprise, La-La Land’s lavish 2012 restoration presented the score anew: fully restored, remixed and mastered from the first generation multi-track masters by Bruce Botnick, the original album co-producer and Goldsmith’s long time scoring engineer.

 

This new 2-CD edition is the official tie-in soundtrack to the forthcoming STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE: THE DIRECTOR’S EDITION, premiering this year on the Paramount Plus streaming service. Post-Production Supervisor/Associate Producer Mike Matessino co-produces the album with Botnick, handling restoration, editing and assembly of the music.

 

This edition definitively presents the full film score on CD1, continuing through the start of CD2. The program now begins with the long version of the “Overture,” reflective of “The Director’s Edition,” with the short version heard in 1979 now kicking off a section of “Alternates” on CD2, which feature early versions of major score cues that were later reworked. Closing out the presentation is the enduring 1979 soundtrack album program, now re-created from the remixed first generation master material for consistent and superior sound quality throughout the set.

 

Matessino collaborates with Jeff Bond on the thoroughly researched album notes, which feature interview excerpts by Goldsmith, Botnick and performers Craig Huxley and David Newman. The packaging and 28-page full color booklet are designed by Jim Titus and feature new images from “The Director’s Edition.”

This certainly looks complete enough. I mean, you'll take my 2012 set from my cold, dead hands. But this is terrific. And I know at least one person who missed the 2012 and is looking forward to it.

I'd say this absolutely captures the most essential tracks from the 3-CD edition hands down. 

The one track I miss the most is certainly the Ilia's Theme alternate from the end of disc 3

This is probably what you'd call the perfect expanded release of the score, were it not for the Sony release causing Mike and LLL to feel the need to include all the wrong takes released in 1999 on their 3 disc set (if I'm understanding that situation correctly?). Complete final score and all of the significant alternates plus a remastered OST. Had I missed the 3 disc set I'd be very satisfied with this release and delighted with the opportunity to get my hands on it.

I just realized I neglected the difference with "Inner Workings".  The 50th anniversary set included the "film version" but was that just a different mix of the same take that made the wind machine more prominent, or was it different take(s)?

I will be buying this to support the label, because I love the score, I love the film, Jim Titus' new designs with images from the DE, and the minor upgrades in sound are enough for me.  (I am secretly [not so secretly?] hoping Mike dialed back the reverb a tad, but that seems to be my personal hang-up, I freely admit it.

 

One thing I treasure on the 3 CD is the Raw Takes of the Main Title.  Just... GOLD, and a nice companion to the multiple takes of the Star WARS main title on the 1997 SE CD set.

This and the concert Main Title are the two really indispensable tracks that this new set will not have. IMHO. (YES I need four versions of the Overture / Ilia's theme!)

The LLL booklet says that track is made up of take 85 of the Main Title, and takes 200, 202, and 203 of the End Title.

 

The film version of the Main Title uses takes 87 and 88.

The album version of the Main Title uses takes 63 and 64.

 

The film version of the End Credits uses takes 199 and 203.

The album version of the End Credits uses takes 200 and 203.

I just like having a track that has the opening titles mixed with the Ilia suite and the end credits. Having a Jerry opening title that has a beginning AND an ending is a rarity.

 

I mean, I can mix my own...

Essentially the remastered OST programme, as well as the separate film versions of Games and Spock Walk sold it for me.

 

I'm out of town for a while, so it may take a couple of weeks before I can assess this revised release.

I considered my purchase of the 3-disc version to be a double dip after begging family for the 2-disc version from 1999 (with the second disc being just talking about the TV show).

I think, I will recreate this wonderfully rounded bonus section by means of the 3-disc-set.

 

By the way, I actually prefer the version of Inner Workings with the wind machine being more subtle. The new mix sounds a little less organic to my ears.
