David Arnold to Score Greg Mottola’s ‘Confess, Fletch’

Composer David Arnold (Independence Day, Casino Royale, Stargate, Sherlock, Tomorrow Never Dies, Shaft, Die Another Day, Godzilla) is reuniting with director Greg Mottola on the upcoming comedy Confess, Fletch. The movie is based on the second novel of Gregory Mcdonald’s 1970s mystery novel series (which has previously been adapted into the Harold-Faltermeyer-scored 80s features Fletch & Fletch Lives) and stars Jon Hamm, Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, Roy Wood Jr., John Slattery, Annie Mumolo, Ayden Mayeri and Lorenza Izzo. The movie follows an investigative journalist who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, in which he is pinned as the prime suspect. Zev Borow wrote the screenplay. Hamm is also producing the Miramax production with Bill Block (Halloween, Bad Moms) and Connie Tavel (Judging Amy, Then She Found Me). Arnold has previously collaborated with Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) on the 2011 comedy Paul. Confess, Fletch is currently in post-production and will be released later this year.

Arnold will also return to score the second season of Amazon’s Good Omens, which is currently in production.

Several things to say about this.

First of all, it's a pretty crazy enterprise to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Chevy Chase movies, but this might have a completely different twist on the source material, who knows?

Second, I'm delighted to hear that Arnold has a solo feature film assignment again (if it is indeed solo). Last solo feature film score was, if I'm not mistaken, PAUL way back in 2011.

Third, while one can certainly miss the prospect of hearing another brilliant Faltermeyer score -- especially now that he might be "on the radar" again after his TOP GUN: MAVERICK work -- Arnold is indeed good at pastiche. But I seriously doubt he's doing any Faltermeyer-like stuff for this, as the whole project seems to be a very different beast altogether.

Hamm is an upgrade from Chevy in every respect.  I've never gotten why Chevy was such a star, he does nothing for me in pretty much everything except Community, and that leans into how un-charming he is.

To each his own… Chevy was fantastic as Fletch. I never read the books so my opinion is just from a cinema stand point. Faltermeyer’s Fletch scores are my favorites from Harolds as well… wish he got the gig.

Hope this films gives him a chance to use an orchestra on a big canvas again.

Would love something in the same vein as Knives Out, Murder On The Orient Express but with Arnold's own touch.

I've missed him on larger films.

This film, Knives Out & See How They Run are 3 films & scores in the 'detective/murder' genre that I'm very much looking forward to. I always like these types of films.

Based on the trailer, I'm not exactly hyped about the opportunity for the score here. I'm thinking it's gonna be something low key. Best case, maybe something like Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased).

I've listened to the 5 minutes of Arnold 3 times now.

It's fun rock and roll music with funky keyboard grooves

I can't imagine the entire score is like this, but then again, who knows.  There might barely be any original score even needed for this movie

I've only seen Hot Fuzz once and never listened to its score separately, so wouldn't have recognized it

Why would it be quoted here?  An in-movie reason, or just Arnold having a laugh?

I'm not sure it would necessarily be intentional. Just a catchy melody. It pops up in the last track too.

One of the themes from Godzilla was reused note for note in Narnia. I'm sure that wasn't just "for a laugh"!

Although this album only has 5 minutes of Arnold material on, it's pretty fun. MOAR!

It's in both. The Fletch In The Alley reference is more obvious, but I can't find that track on YouTube.

This is a pretty entertaining movie. Lots of fast dialogue, and Jon Hamm is very watchable.

There's a reasonable about of additional score. Certainly enough to justify a score only album. I hope one happens.
