Popular Post TownerFan 4,998
Quote This special concert performance of Fiddler on the Roof features the Grand Rapids Symphony performing the first live performances of John Williams’s orchestral arrangement of the movie score, which premiered over 50 years ago. After the Hill Auditorium debut, the production travels to Philadelphia, where The Philadelphia Orchestra will perform it three times at the Kimmel Center as part of a multi-faceted creative partnership with UMS. https://ums.org/performance/fiddler-on-the-roof-in-concert This is very cool! Bespin 8,656
That's the story of a live orchestra trying to sync to pre-recorded voice-only singings for two hours.

No, it is not. It is a concertante performance with singers/actors. The orchestra will perform John's orchestrations instead of the original ones. Bespin 8,656
The stage play with all the decor? With live actors on stage, or the orchestra on stage? That's not clear!
TownerFan 4,998
It says “lightly staged performance”, so it means likely a concert-like performance with orchestra and singers together on the stage with perhaps the main singers in costume and some scenery/projections in the background. Disco Stu 15,501
The best way to see a musical live actually. I always care about the music first and foremost, so concert presentations are ideal.
Bespin 8,656
Anyway, just by listening to the original Fiddler on the Roof album (1967), or even to the 3rd CD of the new expansion, we can really hear what JW brought to the musical universe of this play. A little less of "broadway", a little more of jewish "flavour"... a pinch of virtuosity and an overall good taste... In concert, I must admit that it will sound great... I'll purchase the Blu-ray ;-) TownerFan
Jay 38,848
In tandem with the movie's live to projection concerts happening, this staged version is continuing on as well: https://pittsburghsymphony.org/production/84655/fiddler-on-the-roof
