artguy360 1,838
To me ET and Hook are the JE scores most evocative of childhood, with child-like themes and colors. ET is about children on an amazing adventure of sorts, while Hook is about rediscovering childhood with themes about childhood itself. Which for you is most evocative of childhood? Or would you pick another score like HP1 or even AI? I think AI is a dark horse answer with some tracks really about childlike wonder and innocence. Edit: I posted to the wrong section! Can it be moved?
Popular Post Groovygoth666 639
Hhhmmm I think E.T is more evocative of childhood. E.T definitely has a sense of wonder and curiosity to it whereas Hook has a kind of melancholy feel. Williams theme's are perfect in both and work within their narrative and for what Spielberg needed. I'd say E.T captures the world from a child's POV perfectly, Hook is more of looking at childhood through adult eyes and lamenting the lose of that wonder and imagination. blondheim 1,157
This is tough but Hook because it takes me back to my personal childhood, which took place in 91 and not 82, as I was not conceived even in the mind

Tom 4,610
If we take our own experiences as children out the equation (which i think we should, given the question), I honestly think it is either Home Alone or BFG, if we are talking just Williams. That's interesting, after listening through Williams works for Spielberg recently I found BFG to honestly be quite bland, nothing about it really screamed childhood. It felt underwhelming for the content, what tracks would you say stood out and captured that kind of spirit?

Home Alone is another great JW score that captures childhood well.
GerateWohl 4,276
All the named Williams scores are a little too adventurous in that sense. I would meanwhile rather go with Michael Giacchino's Inside Out.
Raiders of the SoundtrArk 2,423
I think E.T. and Hook are the more obvious choices. I also find The Reivers, The Cowboys and The Witches of Eastwick to be quite evocative of childhood by the lightness and their gentle spirit of adventure Disco Stu

Thor 7,384
It will be a toss-up between E.T., EMPIRE OF THE SUN and A.I. -- for different reasons, and portraying different aspects of childhood. Mattris

Positivatee 327
When Hook came out, I was in middle school. I never saw ET in its entirety until college. I'm too old for these scores to be childhood.

BB-8 3,410
For me personally, The Empire Strikes Back - The Rebel Fleet. This music, the themes in their arrangement and succession, had a great impact on me as a child of around 10, making me feel and think for the first time how it would be to lose someone you love. blondheim

Disco Stu 15,495
Guess I have to be a broken record and bring up The Reivers. The entire story is after all a man looking fondly back on a romanticized blissful childhood. blondheim 1,157
The Reivers is nostalgic as hell. I must have seen that movie as a kid because the first time I heard that theme it felt like I had always known it. But then that of course is John Williams' talent. Bellosh 3,316
Ultimately for me Hook isn't as adventurous as an Indy score, isn't as magical as a Harry Potter score and isn't as playful as a Home Alone score. For my childhood experience it would be E.T. but nowadays, kids are probably scared shitless of E.T. So Hook is probably the answer. I can't get into Hook, I really tried.
