Popular Post Disco Stu 15,495
Given the style of his concert output in that period, the Flute Concerto being foremost in my mind, I think many fans would be disappointed if they were expecting a grand Romantic statement. Yeah I think that myself and D. Adams mentioned someplace else on here about it before. The symphony is paired in style with the flute concerto and original version of the violin concerto. There is a great interview with Andre Previn where he talks about it: (I actually couldnt find the video anymore on youtube but it was called "Andre Previn interviews John Williams (1988)) He talks about it like a workshop piece, and actually Doug and I both had the same impression of the piece. It's fascinating to see his writing process and how he was constructing things in that period, but even Williams doesn't think its a very good piece, hence it hasn't been played in a very long time. The writing is a bit.... awkward and clunky at times, and a bit rough sounding. I'm not sure those are the right words, but the writing is not the polished sound that of his other works. I'm not sure that either of those program notes really give more than a very vague description, especially the composer's own, which is a bit surprising that his is so uninspired sounding given that his notes, even for the flute concerto and violin concerto on the original album, are much more insightful. “I think [the Violin Concerto] is about the closest I’ve been able to come to a genuine, idiosyncratic expression. As I was working on that, I was just beginning to feel my wings—much more than the symphony or the wind works. I had more difficulty with style and idiom in those; with the Violin Concerto I was beginning to find a style which… it was still Romantic, but the kind of Romantic Atonality, in an American way, which I was seeking.” That I would say is the best description of it. Maybe the best word to describe the writing style is "forced" rather than a more natural and genuine sound in his other words. I would say the Sinfonietta is similar in that regard. Like he's trying to use his own personal voice in the style of someone else writing, if that makes sense. Often the case with experimental type works. Although here I think Williams was trying to more find his own way, Boulez is probably most famous for that (and maybe Beethoven). Would write pieces to experiment with an idea he wanted to flesh out in a few pieces and then sometimes throw away those "experiment" pieces when he had the final result he wanted. Andy 4,000
I just know it's not something I'd warm up to, but I'd give anything to hear it. WilliamsStarShip2282
