The John Williams Orchestra Library at the Juilliard School

Did we somehow miss that the Juilliard School in NYC named their orchestra library after Williams back in 2011? Surprisingly, I can’t find a reference to it anywhere on this site. A friend mentioned that JW stopped by Juilliard and this library today.

This is the first I've heard of it. I imagine it is one of his many awards and recognitions he is particularly fond of.

Yeah, this is old news. Agreed, its unfortunate there is no recording of that concert. But the most unfortunate thing is that hes willing all of his manuscripts to them.

I think it's wonderful he's doing that. It means all of his handwritten scores and sketches will be properly preserved and academically studied for eons to come, as they should. Hopefully that includes "bottom drawer" compositions that would otherwise never see the light of day. It's a testament to the incredible esteem he has amassed in his lifetime as a composer; in centuries to come he will likely be as well-studied and written about as the greats before him, especially as an iconic force in preserving the cultural relevance of the symphony orchestra. It's a far cry from the elitism of art music criticism in the 80s-90s in which he was regarded as a "lesser" composer.

Because Julliard is very over rated and I don't really think they're going to do any of that. His library would be much better off with the Sacher foundation. I personally think they will guard them for there own greedy purposes and not really allow academics outside the school access to them for study, whereas Sacher allows anyone to have a look (if you are actually working on something, unfortunately its not a museum yet).

I don't really know enough about the operations of Julliard to agree or disagree with you there. But I think it's lovely that he's donating to an institution that had such an impact on his music education. It's better than the manuscripts falling into the hands of rich and greedy art collectors, then they'd never see the light of day. The important thing is that Williams' wishes are being respected.

 

Hopefully they will digitise the works and when they enter public domain they become available for anyone to study. That obviously won't benefit us but for future generations it will be a phenomenal resource. And who knows, they might digitise them anyway, and access will be granted for universities around the world. That'd be amazing.
