Mike Matessino: "At least 5" new Williams releases due this year

I could see Jaws and Mr. Chips coming back this year. But those aren’t “new”.

I hope we get the Patriot.
Perseverance should be done with Eastwick.
With Indy 5 coming, a box set of 1-4 would make a great Christmas gift.

Exciting news!

Since we have Rogue One and Solo expanded, I really hope there is at least a start on Williams' Star Wars...maybe 1 trilogy this year. I know, I know...I'm dreaming.

If there's no Star Wars at all, then my guesses are:

Cinderella Liberty

Born on the Fourth of July

Nixon

Amistad

Catch Me If You Can

Since this year marks the 20th anniversary of Catch Me If You Can, and the 25th anniversary of Amistad, and the 35th anniversary of The Witches of Eastwick, those three are my personal hopes. Aside from those three guesses, I am all for anything!

MM knows his audience and surely wouldn’t be so cruel as to toy with us in that way! Imagine the depths of despair we’d plumb were this mere raillery!

I like to think that, this being the year of JW’s 90th, there’s justification for expanded scores from movies from any year. But if we’re specifically talking releases tied to anniversaries, we can probably agree that “LLL’s Hook: 10th Anniversary Corrected Edition” has a nice ring to it.

Mike, I know you can make it happen!

Has Mike had much involvement with Williams releases outside of expansions, ie his concert works?

Well there's an intrada release impending, bit can't recall what they'd be able to license?

Was it LLR or someone that said they had a Witches of Eastwick ready but had to wait till Perseverance had sold out?

Too many variables and a failing memory, but I sure hope Hook is one of them, seeing as Mike worked on the Mondo release gives me hope of an expansion revisit.

Basically anything except Star Wars, Indiana Jones or Sugarland Express (or the other titles JW vetoed).

It's more the titles that other labels can't touch that Intrada can, namely anything had an OST from Hollywood Records (as Hollywood Records is a subsidiary of Disney Music Group, and Intrada has established connections there).

So expansions of Nixon and The Patriot are most likely Intrada's territory.

Yep. And the title disappeared from Perseverance's website back in December, so we've speculated their licence has expired (as it's been 10 years since they reissued the OST). If that's the case, LLL can apply to WB for a new licence and expand it, at last!

He mentioned reissues: so that could be some OOP CDs like How to Steal a Million, Jane Eyre, Heidi,  etc. All redone with the Matessino touch.

HOOK and THE PATRIOT would be awesome. CINDERELLA LIBERTY did get an isolated score on the Twilight Time blu ray so that should be able to happen now.

Only heard the OST for both (and watched The Patriot many years ago), either of these would be a welcome addition, but these two aren't the only potential releases from Intrada right?

Thought so, but would the license expering and selling out this soon allow LLR to be able to get an expansion out this year?

You and me both! The fact Mike did work on Hook from scratch this last year surely has to be enough evidence that a revisit is imminent, seeing as MV knows it's something the fans want as well! But it's all probably in Sony hands now.

I missed out on those earlier releases so a rerelease with a Matessino touch would be very welcomed!

Didn't Conrack also get a Twilight Time isolated score?

Wow, that's still a whole wedge of Williams work! But is it fair to say the original Star Wars trilogy has already had the Matessino touch? Didn't he work on the RCA/Sony releases?

The Rare Breed, Story of a Woman and Sugarland Express have been personally vetoed by Williams. And with Images is the reason for the recent release being an OST is because those elements were easily available (even though it never had an official ost)?

Obvioulsy a complete SW presentation including all 9 movies plus Solo, Benny and Galaxy Edge themes would be the dream but I guess it's not going to happen.

Otherwise I would love expansions for Cinderella Liberty (Quartet), CMIYC (LLL), Amistad (LLL), The Patriot (Intrada) and Presumed Innocent (Varèse, it's their last title from the Williams catalogue and I don't see them missing the opportunity of his 90th birthday year...)

It's such a shame they didn't ask Mike to do an isolated score on the new Bluray release. Could've been a backdoor solution to get us that score despite JW's veto.

The elements were all transferred as well.

I would be rather interested in expasions of more recent scores like CMIYC, Tintin, The Terminal, but also The Patriot (I am still missing that one in my collection), Midway, Jane Eyre, The Reivers or JFK would be welcome. And anything of Star Wars anyway.

        Does

It is somehow funny, that from Williams I prefer his more recent work but from Jerry Goldsmith I definitely prefer his earlier works.

Mike Matessino did not edit, mix, or master the 1997 2-CD Star Wars sets.  He wrote the liner notes, and told the music editors how he'd like the programs to be edited.  The digital transfers were done by Brian Risner, the music editing was done by Dan Hersch, and the mastering was done by a company called Digiprep.

Mike didn't start doing his own editing until he began doing albums for FSM the following year

The reason the recent release of Images is only the OST album JW assembled in 1972 is because the original scoring elements have never been located. They might never turn up so we might only ever have the OST album as commercial release, unless JW approves releasing music from the mono music stem of the film I guess.

        How to Steal a Million

        The Rare Breed/The Plainsman 1CD

        Daddy's Gone a Hunting

Valley of the Dolls (Pop Score?)

Jane Eyre (tapes are gone though)

Story of a Woman (although it has been nixed by Williams)

The Screaming Woman (even though its only the End Credits I believe)

        CBS Playhouse Saturday Adoption (1968)

Total rarities. The complete score for How to Steal a Million would be an absolute gem.

In an ideal world these four (plus Potter I think) would be perpetually available at least in digital form.

For new expansions I'd like to see The Terminal, if only see to the full score properly presented. It's hardly the most valuable in terms of unreleased material though. There aren't really any Williams remaining for me that are personally essential for expansion (apart from selected Indy/SW obviously)
