If we are to expect three more new expansions by the end of the year, it seems inevitable that they should be relesed in close proximity to eachother.

I'm thinking that it's already (almost) mid-august, and there aren't that many more months left of 2022.

 

I'm not complaining, I think that's great - just stating the fact.

 

Which month usually have more expansions released during the fall/winter months? Is there any pattern from previous years? Or do you think that we'll get a new release "once a month?"

Mike initially said "at least 5" new expansions this year, plus reissues.

 

After Spacecamp and Presumed Innocent were announced (2 of the 5), he said 3 more expansions were mastered but he was only working on 2 of them for the end of the year (presumably Black Friday).

 

It's unclear where that leaves the 3rd mastered release. Either it was a lot further along than the others and will release in the next few months, or they're simply prioritizing the other two titles. They're always at the mercy of studio approvals anyway so there's no guarantees with these timelines.

I certainly wouldn't hold it against him if all 5 didn't manage to make it into calendar 2022.   It'd be very hard for any producer or label to say what will be coming out that year given the uncertainties of approvals, manufacturing backups, etc.

That’s a very good point. However, given that it’s the maestro’s ninetieth year, I really do think they’re being conscientious of their release schedule and waiting to go all out for the holidays.

Absolutely no shade on MM if these releases don’t see the light of year within the end of the year.

 

I also imagine that from a sales perspective it would be better to let each release has its own release window. That way you can hype up each release, put each release in the spotlight (so to speak) without any soundtrack stealing another’s thunder. From a marketing point of view, you don’t want tat kind of cannibalism.

 

From that perspective, I could see one release at the end of august, and one Black Friday. But that is if it’s on the same label, for otherwise the release dates can’t be coordinated, and they might as well coincide.

 

Either way - I’m in no rush. Good times ahead. 

 

And that’s not even talking about new original music coming!

The question is, which shrinks more quickly: a) The interval between any number of given releases before the end of the year, or b) the chance that all expected releases are indeed coming out this year?

Also add that Jay has not doused or added any discussion to a Jaws reissue that's been thrown around in a few of these threads. At least that I'm aware of.

But both scores are great works of art from beginning to end.

What everyone else said.

 

A.I. is a masterpiece, filled with some of the best themes JW has ever written. Probably his best score since Close Encounters. Rich with ideas, equal parts lyrical and atonal, endlessly rewarding for listeners on repeat listens, with an emotionally satisfying climax that rounds the whole package out.

 

That expansion remains in my top 3 MM releases of all time, even after 7 years.

 

War of the Worlds is uniquely dark and aggressive, which you have to be in the right mood to enjoy. But once unlocked it's an incredibly rewarding score; one of those expansions you don't realise you needed until listening to it, then you wonder how you ever lived without it.

It's remarkable, isn't it?

 

Two of my grandparents didn't survive their early 70s. It's almost inconceivable that someone the same age could be writing such wildly complex, aggressive music at the same point in their lives. That we're nearly two decades beyond that point and he's still busying himself with action scores almost defies belief.

 

Another of my legends, David Attenborough - just turned 96 and still traveling the world, giving speeches and educating people about the environment.

 

We're so fortunate these people effectively dedicated their lives to their craft. Not only has it seemingly enriched their lives but we've become lifelong beneficiaries of their talents, through music and conservation.
