Popular Post Jay 37,359
Bourne Identity, The: Tumescent Edition (CD) JOHN POWELL UPC: 888072412774 Release Date: 5/20/2022 Regular price$ 19.99 The Bourne Identity (2002) revitalized the action genre in thrilling, consequential fashion. Matt Damon’s “Jason Bourne”—an alias for a man with no memory, but a ferocious set of fighting skills—upped the ante for gritty, imaginative, pulse-pounding action as well as emotional depth and sophistication, leading to a hugely successful franchise. The Bourne Identity was directed by Doug Liman, whose background in indie film (Swingers, Go) made him the perfect filmmaker to reinvent the genre. For the score, Liman found a willing partner in John Powell, who had started his career working for Hans Zimmer. But Powell, too, wanted to try something different from his previous action films (Face/Off). With Liman’s encouragement, Powell innovated an intimate, novel score from electronics, solo bassoon and strings that captured the film’s anxiety, grittiness and existential mystery—with a propulsive “motor” theme that became the franchise’s signature. Heavily improvised and shaped by digital technology, the music nonetheless captures the human heart of the film’s protagonist—and as always with Powell, is executed with great subtlety and taste. For this new album of The Bourne Identity, Powell has personally assembled a new, expanded program which he calls a “Tumescent Edition”—showcasing the evolution of some of the film’s cues, as chronicled by Brian Satterwhite in new liner notes. Limited edition of 1,500 copies. TRACKLIST 1. The Bourne Identity Main Titles 4:23 2. The Bourne Identity Original Opening 4:25 3. Bourne At Sea 1:25 4. Bourne On Land 1:45 5. Popular Post Jay 37,359
Interesting track list - it's clear now that after this and both Dragon expansions, he likes to put the alternate versions of cues directly into the main program immediately before or after the film versions, rather than putting all alternates together as a bonus track section. Edmilson 7,441
Yeah, it's one of the most influential action scores of the century alongside Batman Begins and Inception. But that doesn't mean that influence was good, as most Bourne imitators were lifeless, generic scores that directors probably pushed for their composers to follow the temp track. Yes, like Zanelli's THE HITMAN. But I go even further than you -- BATMAN BEGINS and INCEPTION wouldn't have sounded the way they did if it hadn't been for Powell's first BOURNE score, replacing even the dominating power anthem style that Zimmer defined in the 90s with a more ostinato-driven style (a 16th note(?) Bourne riff with slight harmonic variations on top). Since Powell was once a 'student' of Zimmer's, it then begets the old STAR WARS trope that 'the apprentice had now become the master' or something to that effect. OneBuckFilms 319
The samples sound great (as I expected with this score), and it's really great to see this released. I'd be curious to compare it to the OST (spreadsheet time @Jay ) ? This isn't a score I talk much about, but it is one I listen to a lot, especially on road trips. One of my favorites. HunterTech 994
I am noticing two tracks on here are ones that aren't on the bootleg (Conklin Killed, Got Any ID?). However, the other one of the final tracks listed on HZ.com (Shut It Down) is absent, so either it went unused or JP didn't think it added anything to the presentation. As such, it seems we ended up with only 99% of the score now.

No but seriously, I'm really glad this has been released in this format. The OST really wasn't that great as it didn't tell a story. It just sorta ended and then had some remixes and demo(?) cues. Out of the 3 scores (the second being the best), this one has the most amount of substantial unreleased music (whether officially or bootlegged) So overall, I'm glad this is the one that got the release. Which is fine, I'm sure it would have been expensive to license, but it's an essential part of the listening experience (and probably the main musical identifier for the franchise for the average viewer) so I'll certainly be adding it manually. 2 hours ago, Evanus said: Wait a minute, am I correct in thinking this cue is still missing?! HunterTech 994
The issue I'm having is that based on the info I've seen so far, I doubt it'd be the definitely absent Shut It Down cue, since it seems to accompany a following scene. And since nothing else is listed on the HZ.com cue list there, I'm starting to wonder if it's a last minute thing that just didn't get properly written down and archived. "Pont Neuf" is about the same length as the OST version. I did some digging, it should be the track "Bourne Remembers" which is about 2 minutes long. A. A. Ron 1,742
I've been eagerly awaiting an official expansion of this score for almost 15 years and now that it's finally here, I'm only getting 1 of the 3 cues I was most looking forward to having/having in good sound. I can't fucking believe it. For me, this is like getting an Azkaban expansion without the Rescue of Sirius. I no longer have any confidence my long hoped for internet cafe cues from Supremacy and Ultimatum will ever see the light of day and I'm unreasonably depressed about it. Jay 37,359
So it sounds like the music you guys heard in the film that you like, that doesn't seem to be in the tracklist, could be because it was music tracked in from one of these new alternates you've never heard before, and not an actual cue written for the scene, if I'm understanding correctly Disco Stu
A. A. Ron 1,742
I think Identity is the warmest film and Ultimatum is the most polished. Supremacy is my favorite though, both film and score. I love how it has the smallest stakes of the trilogy. After Marie’s death, it seems like Bourne has no real reason to keep fighting so hard to survive, but then we get to the end of the film and we realize that he was literally just fighting to get to Moscow and make a clumsy, heartbreaking apology to a young woman whose life he ruined when she was still a child. The internet cafe cue we keep referencing from Supremacy is a similar situation. That cue uses parts of the Room 645 cue. It can’t be recreated by fans though as it only uses certain parts of the mix/doesn’t include all of the instruments.
