What are your non-Williams film score holy grails now?

Jay

Recommended Posts

Holy grails in this context means film (or TV or video game, etc) scores that you most would like to have a new album program get released for

It can be scores that never had a score album at all, as well as scores that had an album, but you'd like an expanded version of

In this thread, I'm specifically asking about Non-Williams grails (I can do another thread for Williams grails too, but I figured I'd wait until the two titles MM teased he is aiming to have come out at the end of the year, are out)

So, what are your holy grails these days??

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire (Patrick Doyle)

Eragon (Patrick Doyle)

The Hobbit Trilogy (Howard Shore)

Fantastic Beasts 1 & 2 (James Newton Howard)

Willow was one until yesterday.

It's crazy that so many of my non-JW grails (mostly Horner) have disappeared from this list thanks to our beloved labels!

I recently found an old grail list I had saved on an old hard drive, and here are the non-Williams on it:

Spoiler

Didn't even get a score album

  1. Back To The Future (Silvestri)
  2. Die Hard (Kamen)
  3. Ghostbusters (Bernstein)
  4. The Goonies (Grusin)
  5. Gremlins (Goldsmith)
  6. Earth Star Voyager (Schifrin)
  7. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (Horner)
  8. Predator (Silvestri)
  9. Speed 2: Cruise Control (Mancina)
  10. Tango and Cash (Faltermeyer)

Has a score album, but would love a complete edition

  1. The Abyss (Silvestri)
  2. Air Force One (Goldsmith)
  3. Aliens (Horner)
  4. Apollo 13 (Horner)
  5. City Slickers (Shaiman)
  6. City Slickers II (Shaiman)
  7. Contact (Silvestri)
  8. Cutthroat Island (Debney)
  9. Batman (Elfman)
  10. Batman Returns (Elfman)
  11. Beetlejuice (Elfman)
  12. Die Hard With A Vengeance (Kamen)
  13. Edward Scissorhands (Elfman)
  14. Fifth Element (Serra)
  15. Independence Day (Arnold)
  16. The Last Starfighter (Safan)
  17. The Matrix (Davis)
  18. Mission: Impossible (Elfman)
  19. Predator 2 (Silvestri)
  20. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (Kamen)
  21. Robocop (Poledouris)
  22. Rocketeer (Horner)
  23. Star Trek 2 (Horner)
  24. Star Trek 3 (Horner)
  25. Starship Troopers (Poledouris)
  26. Tomorrow Never Dies (Arnold)
  27. Total Recall (Goldsmith)
  28. Twister (Mancina)
  29. Waterworld (JNH)
  30. Willow (Horner)

It's amazing that now, 20 years later, out of the 40 titles listed above, only 5 remain now after the Willow announcement!  Wow!

So my current grail list - and I can't help myself but split it up again - is:

Didn't even get a score album

  1. Alcatraz (Tilton and Datzman)
  2. ALIAS Season 3 (Giacchino)
  3. ALIAS Seasons 4-5 (Tilton)
  4. Assassins (Mancina)
  5. Batman and Robin (Goldenthal)
  6. Earth Star Voyager (Schifrin)
  7. King Kong rejected (Shore)
  8. Romeo and Juliet rejected (Horner)
  9. Spider-Man 3 (Young)
  10. Undercovers (Datzman)

Has a score album, but would love a complete edition

  1. Brainstorm (Horner)
  2. Fifth Element (Serra)
  3. The Hobbit (Shore)
  4. Last Action Hero (Kamen)
  5. License To Kill (Kamen)
  6. LOST (Giacchino)
  7. Now You See Me (Tyler)
  8. Midnight Run (Elfman)
  9. To Die For (Elfman)
  10. Sneakers (Horner)

Has some form of expanded release, but would love a more definitive/complete edition

  1. Beetlejuice (Elfman)
  2. Casino Royale (Arnold)
  3. Dead Presidents (Elfman)
  4. Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (Horner)
  5. The Lord of the Rings (Shore)
  6. Mars Attacks! (Elfman)
  7. The Nightmare Before Christmas (Elfman)
  8. Pee-wee's Big Adventure (Elfman)
  9. Speed 2: Cruise Control (Mancina)
  10. Tomorrow Never Dies (Arnold)

James Newton Howard - My Girl [Premiere]

The soundtrack album had a bit of score...only 3.5 minutes though. Would make a wonderful pairing with My Girl 2 by Cliff Eidelman (which got a 6.5 minute suite on the original soundtrack album)!

Good list! Technically MacArthur would be a premiere, of sorts -- the film recording is entirely unreleased! Just as with The Eiger Sanction until this past year, only the unique album recording has been released.

Some 20th Century Fox Goldsmith grails of mine can be found in this post here:

https://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33272-goldsmith-at-20th-new-series-of-releases-by-la-la-land/&do=findComment&comment=1762880

Expansions of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Anna and the King, the two remaining things exclusive to the Varese Goldsmith at Fox box, are probably near the top of my list. I want complete versions of The Chairman and Ransom (aka The Terrorists) too, of course, but those would almost certainly have to be re-recordings since it seems original complete score elements are lost. Same probably goes for Link and Secret of NIMH and Under Fire and In Harm's Way. But if we're dreaming about new recordings I'll also throw Babe, the Gallant Pig on the wishlist!

From Varese Sarabande I would particularly like Deluxe Editions of Medicine Man, City Hall, The Other, Mephisto Waltz, The Ballad of Cable Hogue, Our Man Flint, and Mom and Dad Save the World. Here are complete score breakdowns for the first two:

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=109823&forumID=1&archive=0

http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110759&forumID=1&archive=0

It would also be nice if they could release a complete version of The Final Conflict at last.

Non-Varese controlled, non-20th Century Fox expansions I want:

Leviathan

Raggedy Man

Twilight's Last Gleaming

Goldsmith premieres (either original recordings or new recordings if necessary):

Indict & Convict

Crawlspace

Pursuit

Lights Out

The Waltons (six episode scores)

"The People Next Door" (feature-length CBS Playhouse from the late 60s, and the genesis of the Chinatown theme)

The Expendables (unsold pilot)

a bunch of other great early TV work

The General With the Cockeyed Id (there is a bootleg of it but it's very shoddy; written scores exist for a new recording if necessary)

Goldsmith's first time scoring animation, and there's a lot of good music!

Aside from the Williamses and several remaining Goldsmith's there's not much left now. A few I can think of:

  • Brainstorm (Horner) (expansion)
  • The Hallelujah Trail (Bernstein; presumed lost aside from the album tracks) (expansion)
  • A full re-recording of Captain Blood (Korngold)

Nice, but not absolutely essential:

  • Sneakers (Horner) (expansion)
  • Frankenstein (Doyle) (expansion, incl. source music)
  • Koyaanisqatsi (Glass) (remastered expansion, but I believe that's also considered lost?)

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (every episode)

I don't have any grails left from any other non-JW composers.  Field of Dreams and that 4 CD of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves pretty much completed those grail quests.

Nevermind @Edmilsonreminded me of King Kong by JNH.

that's my last non-JW grail

My top grail list was massacred in the second half of last year and I'm very happily running out. My top two are now:

Gladiator

JP3

And I'd like to see these come out, but they're not of grail importance:

I, Robot

The 13th Warrior

Ice Age

Spider Man 3

Home Alone 3

Ghostbusters 2 (C&C with proper elements)

Less likely but I'd also buy:

Jurassic World 1-3

Pirates: At World's End

Pretty much definitely not going to happen but would buy complete releases of these:

Planet Earth

Johnny English 1 and 2

Free Solo

A couple more Varese grails for me: Doyle's Carlito's Way and Eidelman's Christopher Columbus: The Discovery

Anything significant missing from them? I love Carlito, both film and score, but I never noticed any score that I was missing on album (it's not that densely scored, and there's lots of songs). I only know the Eidelman from the album, but if there's more, I want it.

There's about 15 minutes missing from Carlito's Way... ironically including the music for the scene pictured on the back of the album!

There's so much more, I'm fairly certain a 2CD set would be required for the whole thing. I'm pretty sure it's Eidelman's longest film score... the liner notes on the existing album claim it was his longest work to date, and I'm fairly certain he hasn't scored any bigger projects since:

It is certainly his most epic and complex orchestral work that I'm familiar with, and I want ALL of it!

I'm at a pretty good place as far as expanded soundtracks go. It kinda seems like these days, I have a personal edit for most of the scores I like that's "good enough for now" or there's a decent bootleg. That said, here are a bunch of scores I would happily buy or re-buy to get a legitimate, more definitive album.

I want expansions for:

The Amazing Spider-Man (Horner)

AVATAR (Horner)

Backdraft (Zimmer)

The Bourne Supremacy (Powell)

The Bourne Ultimatum (Powell)

Brave (Doyle)

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (HGW)

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Arnold)

The Da Vinci Code (Zimmer)
Angels & Demons (Zimmer)

Dinosaur (JNH)

From Russia with Love (Barry)

Moonraker (Barry)

Gladiator (Zimmer)

Hancock (Powell)

How to Train Your Dragon 3 (Powell)

The Italian Job (Powell)

King Kong (JNH)

Kingdom of Heaven (HGW)

Kung Fu Panda 1-2 (Zimmer & Powell)

The Last Airbender (JNH)

The Last of the Mohicans (Jones & Edelman)

The Last Samurai (Zimmer)

Maleficent (JNH)

Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Powell)

Mulan (Goldsmith)

Our Man Flint / In Like Flint (Goldsmith)

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and especially 3 (Zimmer)

The Prince of Egypt (Zimmer)

The Road to El Dorado (Zimmer & Powell)

Rudy (Goldsmith)

Salt (JNH)

Sherlock Holmes 1-2 (Zimmer)

Skyfall (T. Newman)

Tomorrow Never Dies (Arnold)

Under Fire (Goldsmith)

WALL-E (T. Newman)

The X-FIles: I Want to Believe (Snow)

X-Men: The Last Stand (Powell)

I want more definitive versions of:

The Lord of the Rings (Shore)

The Hobbit (Shore)

The Bourne Identity (Powell)

The Fugitive (JNH)

Star Trek (2009) (Giacchino)

I want premiere releases for:

Spider-Man 3 (Young)

Troy (Yared)

I would like to get Prometheus/Tadlow style re-recordings for:

Battle Beyond the Stars (Horner)

From Russia with Love (Barry)

Spartacus (North)

The Ten Commandments (Bernstein)

And if we could get a disc or two for anything after the first seasons of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, that would be great!

Some posts are suggesting Zimmer scores, but I thought he was firmly against expanding his own scores (with some exceptions, of course). The same goes for Thomas Newman.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love expanded editions for The Last Samurai, DaVinci Code and the Pirates (specially the third one), but I think Zimmer himself would stop them from happening.

The specialty labels have managed to release expanded versions of Rain Man, Drop Zone, Days of Thunder, Broken Arrow, Peacemaker, and The Thin Red Line. I'm sure more are coming.

This is a wish/desire thread anyway.  Practicality has nothing to do with what your heart desires.

Exactly. If I thought I should only list practical titles, I’d drop The Bourne Identity, The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek (2009), Spider-Man 3, Yared’s Troy and the 2 Stargate TV series from my lists. Those titles aren’t likely to get much action any time soon, especially Bourne, which, well you know…

Yeah, I have the album, plus what Jones put on soundcloud, and the full Beefcake episode score he put on his site, but there are still some unreleased cues I would to be able to listen to on their own. (I have been making a cue list/breakdown of what appears where in each episode)

While a lot have had session leaks, I'd definitely prefer to buy expansions/official releases of Jablonsky's Transformers scores, POTC, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Robert Wises G1 Transformers and Bernard Hoffers Thundercats.

As for expansions I'd love Kamens Three Musketeers and What Dreams May Come. For premier score release George Auric's The Titfield Thunderbolt is the only one that I can think of.

I’ve thought about making a cue list myself, but didn’t want to commit to all the work that would entail. I‘m glad you mentioned Chuck vs The Beefcake though. While I had the soundcloud tracks, I didn’t realize Jones had uploaded the cues for this other episode. They’re mine now!

HP4, Hobbits, Blade Runner at least without goddamn dialogue. I'd buy proper releases of the Pirates and Spider-Man trilogies. I missed out on Occhio Alla Penna, I'd buy it instantly if it was rereleased, preferably with some better remastering. I'd be happy with Rosenmann's LotR. But currently I'm in a mood where I'm too content with all the JW barrage we're getting, not actively hoping or wishing for anything, just happy to take things as they come or ignore them.

Non-Williams holy grails?

Would be:

  • a remastered expansion of James Newton Howards "Unbreakable"
  • a complete re-recording of Miklós Rózsa's "Junglebook"
  • a recording of Howard Shore's rejected King Kong score
  • a re-issue of the 10 Disc Elmer Bernstein box with the Rózsa re-recordings

And not necessarily holy grail, but affordable editions of Joe Hisaishi's symphonies would be nice.
