TWO DOZEN cues exist, but apparently all but TWO of those were not written to picture, but composed based on the script alone (that is why they are labeled by scene rather than reel/part). This was a very unusual approach for Goldsmith; I think he may have only done it one other time: Scene 1 "Main Title," 7 pages 2-1 "On Pier," 4 pages [Goldsmith sketch] 2-1 "On Pier," 7 pages [full score, orchestrated by Harvey R. It's scores like Avatar, The Postman and King Kong (JNH) which I already know in complete form but I wish more people to hear them as well. There's one unreleased cue from Avatar which is only available in the recording sessions bootleg, and it's probably the best action cue Horner wrote during this century, and one of the best of his entire career. I want more people to listen to it as well! (no, it's not on YouTube, and the scene in the movie ain't of much use either, since it was hacked to pieces and replaced with tracked stuff from elsewhere on the final cut). Jack Warner 6
Mine is still Nigel Westlake's score to Babe: Pig In The City! Most of the music that was recorded for this film got left on the cutting room floor when the movie went through some extreme studio-mandated edits right before its release. Save for a few exceptions, the score was replaced with needle-drop songs and tracks from the first film. The three short cues that Nigel released on his Shimmering Lights album are absolutely incredible; but the grand majority of this music has been left unreleased and unheard. Here's what Nigel had to say about it: Quote "The film got recut two weeks before it was due to be released and quite a lot of music was dropped or replaced – they used quite a lot of stuff from Babe. They felt the music was too dark or too violent. The decision was made to cut or replace it and there wasn't time to rerecord anything before it was released. That's normal by Hollywood standards." (from this interview) This is my one holy grail -- would LOVE to see this score get its long overdue premiere. Used to think this would be an impossible thing to imagine... but seeing so many of peoples' old lists here and at FSM crossed off; and with Varese's definitive (and incredible!) expanded release of the first film's score last year... I'm beginning to hope that it's possible for this to actually happen. Yavar Moradi

Ron said: I just dug out my copy of the sessions and the cue I loved wasn't 9m5, it was 9m3R War. Great score though. It's a fine cue, but most of it was already released on the OST. To clarify things, for the final battle and the epilogue of Avatar, Horner wrote five cues (plus their inserts): 9M3R War - It accompanies most of the battle between the Na'Vi and the humans, and it was mostly used as intended in the final movie (only a small part at the end went unused). IIRC, almost all of the cue is on the OST track of the same name. 9M4R The Battle Continues - Written for the "darkest hour" of the battle, when the humans are winning the fight and slaughtering the Na'Vi. Most of it was unused in the movie, though, and replaced with tracked music from 7M2 The Destruction of the Hometree. 9M5R Quaritch Down - Starts heroically when all the Pandoran wildlife joins the fight against the humans and turn the tides of the battle. It also accompanies Jake destroying Quaritch's ship and the villain escaping on his Aliens-like mecha suit, which Horner scored with Aliens-like music. Parts of the cue, however, were replaced with bombastic choir music from 9M3 War, which may explain why it wasn't officially released. 10M1R Fight to the Death - The final confrontation between Jake, Neytiri and Quaritch. It has one insert and one unused beginning, and it was officially released as "The Death of Quaritch" on the Deluxe edition of the soundtrack album. 10M2 A New Beginning - Neytiri saves Jake's life after the fight, and the epilogue. Most of it was on the final minutes of the OST track War. enderdrag64, DemonStar and Jay
