What are your non-Williams film score holy grails now?

I'm surprised only 1 person has mentioned Elfman's two Spider-man scores so far.  I'd love complete releases of those too, just didn't crack my top 10

Ah.

I would love to have re-recordings of the Original Star Wars Trilogy. The original tapes are baked, so I want new recordings.

I want recordings of what they play in the "Movies in Concert" shows, following the exact tempi and clics.

But John Williams never used clicks.

Non-Williams?

Man, I think I'm pretty happy.  I'm having a tough time thinking of stuff.

I suppose some television stuff like the Rankin Bass holiday specials by Maury Laws would be cool.

I don't have many Bond scores, so I'd be cool with a big box set of those if they dusted them off and completed them.

Horner: all the Zorro's, Perfect Storm

Goldsmith: Hollow Man, whatever there is of 'Babe' and 'The Kid' (demos or new recording o sketches)

17 completed cues exist for Babe -- since he was composing the film chronologically it's interesting to note where in the story he stopped:

1-3r "The Drawing," 7 pages
1-4/2-1 "Lonely Babe," 9 pages
2-2r "What Dogs Do," 2 pages
2-3 "The Plan," 6 pages
3-1 "The Yarn," 4 pages
3-2 "The Sneeze," 3 pages
3-4/4-1 "Destruction," 4 pages
4-3 "Mother and Son," 7 pages
4-5 "Christmas Dinner," 2 pages
4-6 "Ferdie's Gone," 3 pages
5-2 "Mistaken Identity," 3 pages
5-3 "The Boss," 16 pages
6-1 "The Bite," 2 pages
6-2 "The Story of Rex," 11 pages
6-3 "A Tragic Day," 2 pages
7-4 "Pig of Destiny," 1 page
7-5/8-1 "Ferdie's Back," 5 pages

http://collections.new.oscars.org/Details/Archive/71303062

The Kid is very unusual... TWO DOZEN cues exist, but apparently all but TWO of those were not written to picture, but composed based on the script alone (that is why they are labeled by scene rather than reel/part). This was a very unusual approach for Goldsmith; I think he may have only done it one other time:

Scene 1 "Main Title," 7 pages
2-1 "On Pier," 4 pages [Goldsmith sketch]
2-1 "On Pier," 7 pages [full score, orchestrated by Harvey R. Cohen]
3-1 "The Kid and Ross," 6 pages
Scene 15 "Single Malt," 2 pages
Scene 20a "The Kid in the Kitchen," 3 pages
Scene 23 "The Kid Takes Off," 13 pages
Scene 34 "On the Pier," 5 pages
Scene 38h "No Coffee," 1 page
Scene 44-47 "The Airplane Model," 11 pages
Scene 48 "Where's Chester," 8 pages
Scene 50 "The Old Horse," 4 pages
Scene 60 "Not Here," 1 page
Scene 69-72 "The Cat Is Right," 12 pages
Scene 77 "Relations," 5 pages
Scene 79 "The Kid and Amy," 6 pages
Scene 81 "She Believes Us," 5 pages
Scene 85 "No Pity," 2 pages
Scene 87-88 "What Happens Next," 10 pages
Scene 92 "Help Me," 15 pages
Scene 100-103 "Help Me (part 2)," 8 pages
Scene 114 "I'm Sorry," 5 pages
Scene 120 "I Found the Screw," 4 pages
Scene 125 "The Pilot," 10 pages
Scene 136 "Russ and Amy," 4 pages

A new, *actual premiere* recording of both works would be wonderful...synth demos would be a historical curiosity for me and I want them if possible, but I'd far prefer a new orchestral recording.

Have you figured out roughly what (or how much) is missing from the two Zorro scores by Horner?

There's expanded On the Run, one brief flashback scene with America Chavez's theme. But that's just a couple of minutes? There's more in the film of course, might rewatch it to see what else is there. But I'd say, for the most part, the album is satisfying. I really enjoy this score now that I know it more.

A lot of the action cues such as Gargantos, Battle Time, and Illuminati vs Wanda are shortened on the OST.

Some scores I'm mostly happy with the bootlegs, but I still wish they get an official expansion so that more people can experience and discuss the awesome unreleased cues that I already know. It's scores like Avatar, The Postman and King Kong (JNH) which I already know in complete form but I wish more people to hear them as well.

There's one unreleased cue from Avatar which is only available in the recording sessions bootleg, and it's probably the best action cue Horner wrote during this century, and one of the best of his entire career. I want more people to listen to it as well! (no, it's not on YouTube, and the scene in the movie ain't of much use either, since it was hacked to pieces and replaced with tracked stuff from elsewhere on the final cut).

There's no such cue on whatever official or unofficial Avatar release. Even the action cues of the Zorro sequel runs circles around that.

I bought Spiderman 2 digitally and realised after some listens that this is a kind of a score that I love to hear during the movie but not isolated at home.

Say what you will, but MY personal favorite Horner action cue is from AVATAR. I don't know if it's been officially released or not but it's in the middle of the "War" track on SonicAdventure's deluxe edition.

I don't know which bootleg from Avatar you downloaded, but that cue definetly exists, and it's "available" on the recording sessions.

Sure, the RS may not have the best listening experience (a LOT of alternates and inserts), which is why an official expansion would be great.

Anyway, what I learned in one of the recent Threads is, that Horner in his last years left the composition of his action cues to his orchestrators. So, it's probably not composed by him anyway. Might also be a reason why it didn't show up on the album.

Holy crap!  I love everything on this list!  I have all the Galactica, but those should stay in print.

I love the TOS re-recordings we have, so some more of those would be most welcome.

Ewok Movies... great choice

Ooh! I just thought of another one:

FLASH GORDON, incorporating both Queen's songs, and Howard Blake's score.

YESS!!!  I've tried to do my own, but it just doesn't work.  A Queen release without dialogue would be nice, and I'm sure the Howard Blake score could sound better.  Great, great suggestion.

Is the movie version of the Main Title a different recording, or just edited?

Well, whoever wrote that cue (which, btw, is 9M5 Quaritch Down) is certainly pretty talented, because it's phenomenal. If it was Franglen, that's even better because it indicates we may have some quality action music for Avatar 2 later this year.

I see a lot of good suggestions, however a lot of them already had an expanded release, isolated score or even sessions.

So I'm trying to concentrate on stuff I haven't found even in trading circles:

Basil Poledouris - Free Willy (66min.)
Christopher Young - Urban Legend (there are sessions with 31 cues and 77 minutes)

John Debney & Joseph Trapanese - The Greatest Showman

Lee Holdridge - Skyway To Death

Marc Shaiman-Patch Adams (sessions with 27 cues/51min. exist)

Randy Edelman - Daylight (30 cues)

Patrick Doyle - Eragon

Mine is still Nigel Westlake's score to Babe: Pig In The City!

Most of the music that was recorded for this film got left on the cutting room floor when the movie went through some extreme studio-mandated edits right before its release.  Save for a few exceptions, the score was replaced with needle-drop songs and tracks from the first film.  The three short cues that Nigel released on his Shimmering Lights album are absolutely incredible; but the grand majority of this music has been left unreleased and unheard.

Here's what Nigel had to say about it:

Quote

"The film got recut two weeks before it was due to be released and quite a lot of music was dropped or replaced – they used quite a lot of stuff from Babe. They felt the music was too dark or too violent. The decision was made to cut or replace it and there wasn't time to rerecord anything before it was released. That's normal by Hollywood standards."

(from this interview)

This is my one holy grail -- would LOVE to see this score get its long overdue premiere.

Used to think this would be an impossible thing to imagine... but seeing so many of peoples' old lists here and at FSM crossed off; and with Varese's definitive (and incredible!) expanded release of the first film's score last year... I'm beginning to hope that it's possible for this to actually happen.

I just dug out my copy of the sessions and the cue I loved wasn't 9m5, it was 9m3R War. Great score though.

Terminator 2

Brazil

Demolition Man

Not really a grail, but a complete release of The Pelican Brief would be great to have. And if Vangelis' estate has the authority to allow expansions, we can add Missing and The Bounty to the list

The cue I'm most interested in from Avatar is Thanator Chase. That is one of my favourite action cues from the score and a proper version doesn't seem to be available anywhere yet. The one on the sessions has a weird reverb effect, and the FYC promo version is micro-edited.

Bruce that sounds sick as heck BOSS.  Hope you've been enjoying the CD!  I know I do -- "That'll Do" and "Protected By Angels" get me every time (both of which I just discovered were arranged by Ed Shearmur of all people!)

I’ve thought about making a cue list myself, but didn’t want to commit to all the work that would entail. I‘m glad you mentioned Chuck vs The Beefcake though. While I had the soundcloud tracks, I didn’t realize Jones had uploaded the cues for this other episode. They’re mine now!

Nice to see some fans of Tim Jones's work on Chuck.  I'd love to see a complete set for the show but I'm thinking this would only happen to promote a reunion move or reboot.  I'd prefer a proper set but even a digital release would suffice.
