Indy 5 to begin recording Tuesday morning!

During the Kennedy Center pre-concert talk, Williams just revealed that Indy 5 will begin recording this coming Tuesday morning, at 10 AM to be precise.

Yeah I'm guessing they're doing it like the sequels and they'll have a few sessions this year. Williams said he expects it'll take him into the fall, right?

Mangold only started editing in early March so this seems like a very quick turnaround. Maybe he had some scenes already cut to give to JW. Or maybe JW is still writing.

Mangold's editor cuts while filming is underway. The film was already assembly within a few days of production ending. Mangold started his director's cut in March, but that's really just refining an existing cut of the film.

 

Williams likely spotted the film after returning from Vienna, so 3 months seems about right for 100 minutes of music. He'll probably keep writing over the next few months while recording every few weeks, like the SW sequels (though I don't see them lasting until November like TROS did).

I wonder if, given that this may likely be written over months, it may have some one-off pieces like Rise of Skywalker.  The Speeder Chase for example.  Or Anthem of Evil, which isn't really used much in the score of the film, as if one day John just had some time to tinker and liked it enough to record it.  

 

Whatever the case, I really hope the long game of scoring affords him plenty of time to give it the love and attention his final (?) film score deserves.

Been trying to familiarize myself more with the works of Lalo Schifrin here lately. Certainly some parallels to Williams. Started out with a background rooted in being a jazz pianist, worked in TV before mostly switching to larger films, born in 1932. His last big scoring effort, however, was in 2007 with the third Rush Hour movie.

 

And it's easy for me to forget how easily that could have been the case with Williams. Music is so ingrained into his DNA that, indeed, I think it unlikely that he would ever truly step away from the music creation process. Say he'd stepped away from film scores back in 2007. For one thing, he's already cemented himself as one of the greats, with that title being secured even going back a considerable number of years prior. But also think of how much career-defining music he has put out since then. I think of his work on Lincoln, another entire film trilogy of Star Wars films, all of his concert pieces, etc. It all feels a little surreal. Other users, including myself, have waxed poetic on this strain of conversation before, so I realize I'm not making light of anything new. I think more than anything I'm trying to speak to myself trying to rationalize how bizarre it is that we're here on this forum still discussing, debating, and analyzing the continued film scoring efforts of John Williams, and that many think that some of these such efforts are among the best he's ever contributed to the musical form. He wrote Rey's theme at 83. Imagine living a life such that you are able to say that, perhaps, your best work was in your 80s. That's insane.

 

Goldsmith. Bernstein. Hermann. Steiner. Mancini. Morricone. Titans of the industry that we look to as being emblematic of the old guard. Williams met, worked with, or was active alongside all of them at some point in their lives. He's that singular bridge tethering us in the here and now to old Hollywood. And somehow here we are getting ready to see him record a score to another one of the biggest movies ever made. To have a man be so prolific for so long at such a level of quality is a gift. To have a place like these forums for the 3+ generations of fans that have grown up and been inspired by his work is another. We could be in a timeline where Williams closed up shop in 2007 and we're all here in a dark cave driving ourselves mad with what could have been. But we're not. He's scoring another fucking Indiana Jones movie. And I still can't believe it.

Can anyone explain why it was done that way for the sequels, and why it's being done similarly for Indy 5?  Is there a practical reason that the recording and writing is stretched out over a longer than usual period of time?  Is this by request of Williams, or is it because Mangold is editing slowly?  Just curious.

Its not really stretched out, its just spaced out instead of all at once (though the flipside is that he might end up scoring things again later, if changes are made)

I don't think we have confimation that Indy is spaced out.  It might be, but it may just be this summer between concert gigs.

 

SW was another story and it was just VII and IX--JJ is JJ.

If my memory serves (and I could be wrong), I thought Williams conducted a suite of the themes in December (what Johnson called the highlight of highlights or such), but the main scoring sessions were later and mostly continuous.

I think it was borne out of his planned schedule in 2015. He set aside 2-3 months to score Bridge of Spies around April 2015, which wouldn't have left enough time to write and record TFA by December, given the complexities of Star Wars scores. Their solution was starting TFA much earlier (late 2014) and getting a few sessions underway before Williams had to step away.

 

That didn't go to plan when Williams needed his pacemaker procedure, leaving him bedridden for a month. Doctor's advice was likely avoiding strenuous activity, which is why Ross and Dudamel conducted so much of TFA. Clearly Kennedy/LFL had his recovery front of mind, so staggering the sessions throughout 2015 gave him time to finish the score at his leisure and recover from each session.

 

When TLJ rolled around, retaining this schedule meant he'd be able to conduct every cue (unlike TFA). Also meant the filmmakers could see how music was working in their film relatively early in post. Unlike a compressed recording schedule, JW would be able to handle revisions at his leisure and record them months later, instead of rushing them overnight (in time for the following day's session).

 

But the days of Williams conducting an entire score in 15 days (like ROTS) are long gone, simply because it's too strenuous (pacemaker notwithstanding) and he obviously wants to conduct his own music. From memory the reason he did so few concerts in 2019 was because he wanted to conduct most of the final score and his doctor insisted rest between each session. And obviously Kennedy/LFL/Disney are happy to accommodate him because, well... it's John Williams!

 

Overall the staggered schedule has more benefits to JW and the filmmakers, even if it's more expensive and opens the door for certain filmmakers to change the edit and require rewrites.

 

But JJ constantly changing the film and needing rewrites was probably an unintended side effect of the longer schedule, not the intended reason for it. I'm sure everyone's hoping to avoid a repeat of TROS on Indy 5...

Would've been a fun piece of trivia having 5 different recordists handling all 5 films though!

 

Murphy's a fine recordist but I hope this sounds a lot better than his recording for Indy 4. That might be one of my least favourite recordings/mixes, especially the oddly muted brass. It sounds weak, limited, compressed and just... off. As if everyone's playing a few steps beneath the correct register.

 

The mixing isn't great either, very soupy and lacking in clarity. The Raiders March on that OST is easily the weakest of the four scores.

Some, certainly. But don't underestimate the enthusiasm of some players. Even if they're perhaps not quite the über-fans many of us are, quite a few of them became musicians because they grew up with Williams's earlier works. And unlike us, they now get to *play* this stuff, and be a part of it.
