They did ? Wikipedia says the "America, the Dream Goes On" showdown was in 1984, 9 years before the end of his tenure. Are you referring to something else ?

I was referring to the end of JW's tenure.

By all accounts, he left on very good terms.  He wanted to spend more time composing and less with all the admin and conducting time necessary as conductor.  He was in his 60s when he retired.  Plus, he has maintained an active laureate role, recorded film scores with them, and wrote several concerti for performers.  I am not sure what Artguy's issue is.
