Paramount+ has been fairly successful. You can personally not like it and it has an awful interface but plenty of hit shows.

Regardless, that is not an indicator they would be great stewards of WB's overall porfolio. Netflix has hit shows too. Stranger Things, Squid Game, and Bridgerton for example, has had better ratings than majority of the shows anywhere.

I just hope if Netflix buys WB that I’ll still be able to buy new WB movies on Vudu or Movies Anywhere. Because I don’t want to pay for Netflix to watch their new films. Genuinely can’t think of a single good Netflix show that wasn’t prematurely cancelled which is almost worse than them making shite movies and TV.

What's likely to happen is Hobo Max will be absorbed into Netflix, and you won't be able to subscribe to them separately anymore. Netflix will probably also discontinue any sales of movies individually, whether digitally or physically. All DVD, blu-ray, and 4K UHD releases will be axed. It will all be on the cloud indefinitely, and they'll be really stingy about when they let movies become available to stream in order to build up demand.

On the other hand some acclaimed Netflix shows go on too long and end up disappointing in the end… they would have been better at one great season, IMO: Sex Education, Squid Game, The Umbrella Academy, Wednesday, Altered Carbon, and yes, Stranger Things.

My problem with Netflix shows is they all look alike. And that's no coincidence.

That and they're all scripted with large amounts of exposition/info dumps by the characters, where they're telling you what they're thinking and why they're doing what they're doing, instead of just showing you. Again, quite intentionally so.

Most of their shows are definitely short attention span theatre.

They make them intentionally boring so people can just scroll away on their telephones while the show is on.

Yes. They're specifically scripted with the assumption with a distracted audience in mind. They're assuming (usually correctly) that the viewer is doing other things.

Which sucks for us because we actually like engaging with movies and shows. But some marketing smartarse would like to lecture about statistics and that "this is how people watch nowadays, whether you like it or not". So that's a rationale and justification for the enshittification of screened entertainment? They should consider themselves above that, but instead they've capitulated to the techbro gods and consider themselves a second priority to the phone apps.

Soon only Netflix and Disney will be left. I wonder who will buy who?

Apple will own one of them.

Honestly, if Apple buys Warner Bros, I would feel a lot better. Apple makes awesome shows and understands the value of theatrical releases (at least for now).

At the moment they don’t seem to be a buying company.

I think the WB library would be huge for them and their streaming service.

What other Netflix shows look like Dark/1899? What other Netflix shows look like Blue Eye Samurai? (Arcane? I've heard great things but haven't seen it yet.)

These are some of Netflix’s most critically acclaimed shows. And I also don’t think Cobra Kai looks like Longmire looks like North of North, for that matter. Whether you like it or not, what other Netflix shows look like The Witcher? One Piece? Black Mirror? I honestly don’t see how Netflix shows are particularly more homogenous than say Amazon shows or even Apple TV+ shows. (Heck, a lot of HBO dramas look similar!)

Providing exceptions to the rule (which you call “outliers”) is all I need to do when someone makes a lazy absolute statement like “they all look alike” that I want to disprove.

That's your problem. You take them at such a literal face value, overlooking that people aren't filing a legal brief, they're just venting through shorthand. Sometimes people like to yak about how fed up they are, and they'll make an absolute statement from a place of emotion, because we're,  like, human. When people express frustration with something they dislike, the last thing they want is some pedantic reading them as if it's misinfo that needs correcting.

Didn't Cobra Kai start out as a YouTube Red show? ;)

It did! But it had more episodes produced when on Netflix than on YouTube. So it (or Longmire, which started on A&E for three seasons before Netflix rescued it from cancellation) would presumably be a good case study: did the show end up looking more generic and samey (with everything else on Netflix, supposedly) after Netflix took it over?

This is a discussion forum. If I disagree with a lazy generalization someone makes, I'm allowed to challenge it. If you don't like me doing so, that's your problem. People don't enjoy being called on their BS, got it. Thanks for that insight.

That's not pedantry. It's just a refutation of a statement. Netflix's biggest hits don't all look alike. It's not some AI generated plot against lazy people.

Thanks.

Hell, Cobra Kai's got a decent amount of variety of looks within the show:

Black Mirror does too, obviously, as an anthology show.

C'mon now. Maybe you'd have more of a case with Paramount+ or something, but I don't even think Elspeth looks like Evil looks like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

What an original wit! If I do something similar feel free to call me out on it. If you’ve already got a specific example of me being a hypocrite, feel free to present it here in this thread (this forum makes that very easy), and I’ll own up. Put up or shut up. :)

I wonder why you’re so very invested in tearing me down and defending a clearly and demonstrably false statement, though.

For me to be called on my BS, I have to be spouting BS. I pretty thoroughly demonstrated (through just random stills I could easily find online) that the claim all Netflix shows look the same is nonsense.

Please demonstrate how a claim I made is BS. Until you do that, you don’t get points for calling me on it.

The fact that you went to the disproportionate effort over something so trivial is hilarious

Kinda disappointing to see that Yavar, who is usually reasonable here, is a massive Netflix fan.

Are you happy that it's Netflix, which according to you has produced some of the most brilliant, incredible TV ever, is buying WB? Even though they'll pretty much destroy it and the theatrical industry (which is their goal)?

A change.org petition will do absolutely nothing to prevent a multi billion dollar merger I'm afraid. You'd have better luck contacting your local antitrust regulator and praying that they are competent and that they have an interest in blocking the merger
