Popular Post Yavar Moradi 2,599
Many of you have no doubt enjoyed The Goldsmith Odyssey's recent Soundtrack Spotlight on Hollow Man (2000) with special guests Bruce Botnick and synth programmer Nick Vidar who worked on the score... https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/11577733-odyssey-soundtrack-spotlight-hollow-man-2000 Connected to this, we also reached out to the office of director Paul Verhoeven, but he preferred to have a more general conversation about his collaboration. Here's the wonderful result! https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/11681407-odyssey-interviews-paul-verhoeven Looking forward to hearing what people think! Steffromuk 386
Damn!!! This is probably my favorite episode so far!! I absolutely love Paul Verhoeven!!! His honesty, his "no BS" attitude and lucidity about his own work is admirable and so enjoyable!! And his stories are just delicious treats. Goldsmith and he really found each other. I would have loved to see (hear) what Jerry would have produced for Starship Troopers if his A hole of agent didn't played that nasty trick on him and Paul. But I'm still happy we got Basil's masterpiece for it too. Thank you thank you thank you for offering us such a great episode, and piece of Movie score History! Honestly Paul's speculation was probably correct: Richard represented (and was close with) both Jerry and Basil, and it was Basil's career which needed help at that point. While I would have LOVED a Goldsmith Starship Troopers score (probably even more than Basil's) I understand why he may have done that, and it wasn't out of malice towards Jerry or Paul. 1 hour ago, Steffromuk said: Thank you thank you thank you for offering us such a great episode, and piece of Movie score History! Steffromuk 386
Sorry for the "A hole" that was a little extreme. I enjoyed all of this very much. 21 minutes ago, Yavar Moradi said: Agreed! Popular Post publicist 4,643
Verhoeven always is a winner as interview guest (though his animated engagingness has regressed a bit, no wonder, he's incredible 84 years old now) and his Carolco reminiscing makes me a bit sad the outfit hadn't had a few more years in it. 'The Crusades' is the major loss, of course. As for the 'Starship Troopers' offer, the movie opened late 1997, and Goldsmith scored both AFO and The Edge shortly before that (and had 5 big pictures on his schedule of which US Marshals and Deep Rising both opened in early 1998). Plus, he had his RSNO recording gigs also spread during that year, so it isn't like Kraft maliciously concealed the offer, but just reported him fully booked. And to be honest, 'Starship Troopers' is a great movie, but i'm not sure the world needed another 90-minute nonstop actionfest by JG that desperately. JNHFan2000 2,959
Thanka for this wonderful interview. I'm from the same country as Paul, amd I always looked up to him as a filmmaker and love his film. To hear him talk about his relationship with Goldsmith (one of my favourite composers) is incredible. And the other parts about other films with Poledouris and Dudley is such a joy to listen to. So thank you very much!!! Yavar Moradi

karelm 2,913
This made me so nostalgic. Those films were reliably entertaining and always had fantastic scores. I miss Jerry and these movies! They were over the top and campy but fun. Yavar Moradi
