I’ll definitely be grabbing Spider-Man with whatever comes in January. I have a feeling I’m going to need to set aside about a hundred. Especially because I also need to snag this Godfather album.

 

I’m very curious about the remastered original album in disc 2. My grandmother and I shared that album together before she died in the early naughts. It’s very special to me.

 

I’m going to play disc 2 first and I’m probably going to cry when it plays, if they’ve done right by the mastering (which I imagine they have)

My copy of Amistad and TND is on track to be delivered tomorrow. Gosh. I’m not sure which one I want to jump into first. An emotional historic drama scored by Maestro Williams? Or the best (arguably) balls-to-the-wall modern Bond score? It will certainly depend on my mood at the end of the day.

Save the best for the last.. I'd go with AMISTAD in the end as its a rich, moving score that is best enjoyed in solitude.

It's pretty cool to get two of December 1997's scores in complete form on the same day. And we already got Titanic! 

 

I distinctly remember TND and Titanic opening on the same day. I already had both soundtrack albums before then. I saw TND on opening night, and caught Titanic later

I remember my History teacher Mom being very excited for Amistad. Whatever the latest “historical Spielberg” picture was we would catch together. I was only 9 when it came out so needless to say she didn’t take me to this one when it opened 😆

 
Tomorrow Never dies was the first Bond movie I ever saw in theaters. And it’s still my favorite to this day of the Brosnan era (Sorry GoldenEye!) Half of that is nostalgic and the other half is due to its killer score.

It's insane how the reviews were so middling at the time and that it's still underrated by a lot of Bond fans.  For me, it's the perfect Bond film, it ticks every box.  Campy scenery chewing main baddie, iconic henchmen (Stamper und Dr. Kaufman), a great Q scene and cool tech throughout, a sexy tragic Bond girl, a great action Bond girl, classic action setpieces, eye-rolling but enjoyable humor.  It's my favorite Bond film of the post-Cubby era to this day.

Such a wealth of unreleased material. I still remember some great underscore music when i watched the film for the first and only time about 8-10 years ago.

What a beautiful release, from the gorgeous Jim Titus art to the perfect assembly from Mike, this is truly the expansion of the year for me.

 

I've only listened once to the main program and I already know this is a score I'll revisit often. Can't wait to discover the additional music and the great liner notes!

I'm just listening to the cd and reading the liner notes, but I have an observation about the latter.

The track analysis is a bit mixed up.  

I mean, it would be nice if there was a track by track analysis with all the themes they're using, in chronological order.

Instead, you read about Cinque's theme and how it is used in each track, then you go to the Dry your tears africa theme and you go back to some tracks that it was used, then you go to Adam's theme, and again back to some tracks.

This way, it makes it difficult if you're listening to the music and reading the liner notes at the same time.

I am not sure if I explained well, what is my problem with them.

Most liner notes writers have been discussing the music grouped by themes, instead of chronological order of the cues, for years now, certainly for longer than the small period of time that we got segmented track by track analysis style liners

Detailed track by track (chronological) liner notes have been around for decades and decades, though it was the FSM label that made that the popular standard while they were in operation from 1996-2013. How do you arrive at “small period of time”, Jay?

 

Personally, I sympathize with filmmusic; I miss those days. FSM was really the gold standard for me in terms of liner notes, and I bought many of their albums for the notes alone. I only lack a couple dozen out of their 250 releases because of the level of film music scholarship and analysis they provided.

Oh I think you both misunderstood me - I wasn't saying anything bad about segemented track-by-track analysis at all, quite the opposite - I love that style and wish it was the standard that every single catalog album still used in their liners!

 

But it did slowly drop of fashion, for probably a variety of different reasons.

As for the duration, I was just going by my gut.  It feels like a lot of releases had these for a while in the 2000s, but we've now been in a longer period where they are mostly paragraph style grouped more by theme or mood than chronological order, than the period of time in which the majority of releases got track-by-tracks

I love when they talk about a specific theme or motive and they write "first heard in this cue...", "appears in its complete form in this cue..", "quoted briefly in these cues...", etc.

 

Then I also like when they point out the major difference in an alternate or extra track.

I finally got my parcel today (order placed through SAE on 29th of November).
Bad surprise: they put a note in the parcel to advise that one title (Jurassic Park) wasn't available and now out of print, so it couldn't be shipped. I just checked the original order email and my credit card statement, I still got charged the full amount...

Surely this is what I am planning to do. But I am sharing this awful customer's experience which is nearly shocking: a notification on a piece of paper? really? in 2022/2023? A title still in print and available to order on your website and you don't have it for good? And you still charge me the whole amount with no problem? Goodbye SAE.
