Everything Everywhere All At Once & Top Gun: Maverick were 2 films this year that blew me away when I saw them in the cinema for the first time. 2 experiences I will never forget.

And McCreary's Rings Of Power. I hoped it would be good, but the quality of writing throughout 8 episodes blew me away.

Overall it's been a great year for music and movies/series. I obviously didn't have the time to catch everything.

Top Gun Maverick it's the best film of the year. If the academy Award wants to become relevant again it needs to crown this best picture of 2022 for too simple reasons It is the best films the most popular film of 2022

Top Gun should win, but I feel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is an incredible film, which achieves what it set out to do.

That might be true but I would say the standards have improved slightly in recent years. There's definitely more colour and melody creeping back into film scoring. To give you a simple example, in 2008 we had Djawadi's Iron Man and in 2021 we had Djawadi's Eternals. Not a huge leap necessarily but an improvement for sure. 😀

I won't have my lists ready for quite some time yet (currently in the process of sampling more than 1000 new scores, and organizing my 2022 film list), but looking forward to reading Gloin's lists. We're kinda twin souls that way, in that our lists tend to include both the big Hollywood blockbuster stuff and the more independent arthouse/festival circuit fare.

Heh, I've just been working on my best of 2020 list, so hope to have this year's ready before the middle of the decade...

Of the bunch of 2022 films that I've seen so far, the only two which I feel sure will remain in my top ten in the long term are The Banshees of Inisherin and Tár. Joanna Hogg's The Eternal Daughter is a strong candidate too (not a promising one for Thor, though, being a sort of sequel to The Souvenir films.) So I expect at least seven of my eventual top ten, fortune permitting, will be films I haven't seen yet. Keeping their places warm at the moment are The Northman, You Are Not My Mother, Blonde, Pearl, All My Friends Hate Me, and then some two from amongst Emily the Criminal, Bones and All, The Wonder, Bodies Bodies Bodies and Catherine Called Birdy.

(Missing the shortlist but still noteworthy are God's Creatures, True Things, Armageddon Time, The Outfit, Watcher, X and What Josiah Saw.)

Films I'm most looking forward to seeing: Aftersun (though it's had such an insanely rapturous response it seems doomed to be disappointing!), Alcarras, All Quiet on the Western Front, Showing Up, The Quiet Girl, Decision to Leave, One Fine Morning, EO, Till, Corsage, Women Talking and The Eight Mountains.

I listened to/sampled between 1500-2000 new 2022 scores. I saw 200 films last year, but only a measly 82 were from the actual year 2022. That's a record low.

Yea the Orville question is a tough one. The show aired in 2022, but none of us could hear the music clean until March of 2023. It's unfair that anyone who did a best of 2022 list before then basically couldn't include Orville, but it also seems weird to rank Orville 3 against other 2023 scores at the end of this year. It's lose-lose, and could have been avoided if they just gave us episodic albums after each episode aired, or this 4 1/2 hour album any time between August and December

That might indeed seem like it. It's not the case, but these are the scores which mostly end up on top.

There's lots of scores for dramas etc. I really love, but somehow they always miss the top spots
